Abstract

An electronic messaging system that receives an original electronic message from a sender direct access client associated with a sender, the original electronic message including header and message information and being directed to a recipient. The electronic messaging system deletes the header information after a first predetermined time after the message information is accessed by the recipient, deletes the message information after deleting the header information, and generates a reply ID correlated with the sender of the electronic message in at least one of a database, a lookup table and an entry in a file system. The reply ID enables the electronic messaging system to direct a reply electronic message back to the sender, the reply ID being part of the header information of the original electronic message.

Claims (35)

1. An electronic messaging system comprising:

a sender direct access client, associated with a sender of an original electronic message and operationally hosted on a sender computer; and

a closed message server comprising memory, communicatively coupled to the sender computer, by a network, the closed message server comprising one or more processors for performing operations comprising:

receiving the original electronic message from the sender direct access client, the original electronic message comprising header information and message information, the original electronic message being directed to a recipient;

deleting the header information from the electronic messaging system after a first predetermined time after the message information is accessed by the recipient;

deleting the message information after deleting the header information; and

generating a reply ID that is correlated with the sender of the original electronic message in at least one of a database, a lookup table and an entry in a file system, the reply ID to enable the electronic messaging system to direct a reply electronic message back to the sender of the original electronic message, the reply ID being part of the header information of the original electronic message.

2. The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the reply electronic message from the recipient, and identifying the sender of the original electronic message using the reply ID; and

associating reply content of the reply electronic message with the sender of the original electronic message.

3. The electronic messaging system of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise storing the reply content and corresponding header information in memory for display to the sender.

4. The electronic messaging system of claim 2 , wherein associating the reply content of the reply electronic message with the sender of the original electronic message further comprises including a further reply ID within header information of the reply electronic message.

5. The electronic messaging system of claim 4 , wherein the header information is stored separately from message content of the original electronic message.

6. The electronic messaging system of claim 5 , wherein the header information and the message content of the original electronic message are stored in at least one of separate files, separate databases and separate tables.

7. The electronic messaging system of claim 5 , comprising a message ID, the operations further comprising maintaining a correspondence between the message content and the header information of the original electronic message using the message ID.

8. The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , further comprising deleting the reply ID based on the recipient failing to send the reply electronic message within a second predetermined time after the message information is accessed by the recipient.

9. The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , further comprising deleting the header information from the electronic messaging system upon a recipient returning to a listing of messages after viewing the original electronic message.

The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , further comprising a recipient direct access client, associated with the recipient and operationally hosted on a recipient computer, wherein the operations further comprise receiving the reply electronic message from the recipient direct access client and directing the reply electronic message to generate.

11. The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , wherein generating the reply ID further comprises generating a further reply ID that is correlated with the recipient of the original electronic message.

12. The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the reply ID is a randomly generated number.

13. The electronic messaging system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise establishing a session having a session ID with the sender direct access client, and storing information regarding the session and the reply ID.

14. The electronic messaging system of claim 13 , wherein the reply ID is retained in memory and associated with the session ID.

15. The electronic messaging system of claim 14 , wherein the operations further comprises deleting the reply ID from memory based on the recipient failing to retrieve the original electronic message within a predetermined amount of time.

16. The electronic messaging system of claim 14 , the operations further comprising deleting an association between the session ID and the reply ID based on the recipient failing to retrieve the original electronic message within a predetermined amount of time.

17. The electronic messaging system of claim 14 , wherein the operations further comprises generating a respective reply ID for each of a plurality of electronic messages, regardless of whether the sender is common among the plurality of electronic messages.

18. The electronic messaging system of claim 13 , wherein the reply ID for the original electronic message is determined using the session ID.

19. A method to process electronic messages, the method comprising:

receiving an original electronic message at a closed message server, and from a sender having a sender direct access client hosted on a sender computer, the original electronic message comprising header information and message information, the original electronic message being directed to a recipient having a recipient direct access client hosted on a recipient computer;

generating a reply ID that is correlated with the sender of the original electronic message in at least one of a database, a lookup table and an entry in a file system, the reply ID to enable directing a reply electronic message back to the sender direct access client, the reply ID is included in the header information of the original electronic message;

deleting the header information after a first predetermined time after the message information is accessed by the recipient;

deleting the message information after deleting the header information.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

receiving the reply electronic message from the recipient direct access client hosted on the recipient computer;

identifying the sender of the original electronic message using the reply ID; and

associating reply content, included within the reply electronic message, with the sender of the original electronic message.
