Abstract

A computing system includes an interface configured to interface and communicate with an external media resource, a memory that stores operational instructions and a processing module operably coupled to the interface and to the memory, such that the processing module, when operable within the computing system based on the operational instructions, is configured to is configured to perform various operations. The computing system receives an audio fingerprint from the external medial resource, divides the audio file segment into a plurality of portions and compares the audio file segment with a plurality of stored audio segments. The computing system then determines whether a threshold number of the plurality of portions of a stored audio segment compare favorably with a threshold number of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment and based thereon determines whether the audio file segment and the stored audio segment correspond to alternate versions of a same song.

Claims (37)

1. A computing system comprises:

an interface configured to interface and communicate with an external media resource;

memory that stores operational instructions; and

a processing module operably coupled to the interface and to the memory, wherein the processing module, when operable within the computing system, is configured to:

receive an audio file segment from an external media resource;

divide the audio file segment into a plurality of portions;

compare the audio file segment with a plurality of stored audio segments, wherein each of the stored audio segments includes a plurality of portions;

determine whether a threshold number of the plurality of portions of a stored audio segment compare favorably with a threshold number of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment; and

in response to determination that a threshold number of the plurality of portions of a stored audio segment compare favorably with a threshold number of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment, determine that the audio file segment and the stored audio segment correspond to alternate versions of a same song.

2. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the external media resource is a listening device.

3. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein computing system includes a listening device selected from a list comprising at least one of a microphone, a mobile telephone and a personal media device.

4. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the external media resource is a field recorder.

5. The computing system of claim 1 , further comprising an output interface.

6. The computing system of claim 1 , further comprising an external input device.

7. The computing system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more data storage devices.

The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the processing module includes a logic engine, wherein the logic engine is adapted to compare a portion of the plurality of portions of an audio file segment to a portion of the plurality of portions of each of the stored audio file segments to determine a nearest neighbor portion from the plurality of portions of the stored audio file segments.

9. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment includes spectral data for the audio file segment.

10. The computing system of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment includes temporal data for the audio file segment.

11. A non-transient computer readable medium containing program instructions for causing one or more modules of one or more computers to perform a method of:

receiving, via an interface, an audio file segment from an external media resource;

dividing the audio file segment into a plurality of portions;

comparing the audio file segment with a plurality of stored audio segments, wherein each of the stored audio segments include a plurality of portions;

determining whether a threshold number of the plurality of portions of a stored audio segment compares favorably with a threshold number of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment;

in response to determination that a threshold number of the plurality of portions of a stored audio segment compares favorably with a threshold number of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment; and

in response to determination that a threshold number of the plurality of portions of a stored audio segment compare favorably with a threshold number of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment, determining that the audio file segment and the stored audio segment correspond to alternate versions of a same song.

12. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the external media resource is a listening device.

13. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the listening device is selected from a list comprising at least one of a microphone, a mobile telephone and a personal media device.

14. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the external media resource is a field recorder.

15. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable medium contains program instructions for causing the computer to output a result via an output interface.

16. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable medium contains program instructions for causing the computer to perform the method of:

receiving data via an external input device.

17. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable medium contains program instructions for causing the computer to perform the method of:

managing one or more data storage devices.

18. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable medium contains program instructions for causing the computer to perform the method of:

comparing a portion of the plurality of portions of an audio file segment to a portion of the plurality of portions of each of the stored audio file segments to determine a nearest neighbor portion from the plurality of portions of the stored audio file segments.

19. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment includes spectral data for the audio file segment.

20. The non-transient computer readable medium of claim 19 , wherein at least a portion of the plurality of portions of the audio file segment includes temporal data for the audio file segment.
