Abstract

Methods and apparatus for automatically identifying and correcting faults relating to poor communications service in a wireless system, e.g., in real time, are described. The methods are well suited for use in a system with a variety of access points, e.g., wireless and/or wired access points, which can be used to obtain access to the Internet or another network. Access points (APs), which have been configured to monitor in accordance with received monitoring configuration information, e.g. on a per access point interface basis, captures messages, store captured messages, and in collaboration with network monitoring apparatus which can be in an AP or external thereto, use message sequences to determine a remedial action to be automatically taken when poor service is likely as may be predicted based on the detected message sequence between a UE and one or more APs.

Claims (33)

1. A system comprising:

a memory; and

one or more processors in communication with the memory and configured to:

generate, based on a plurality of messages generated by a wireless device, a message vector to indicate one or more features of a corresponding message of the plurality of messages;

determine whether a value of the message vector is satisfied by a range of values associated with a message cluster for a service quality, wherein to determine whether the value of the message vector is satisfied by the range of values associated with the message cluster, the one or more processors are configured to determine whether the value of the message vector is within a volume that defines the message cluster in a predefined dimensional space; and

invoke, based on determining that the value of the message vector is within the range of values associated with the message cluster, a remedial action associated with the message cluster.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein to invoke the remedial action, the one or more processors are configured to invoke the remedial action with respect to the wireless device that generated the plurality of messages.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless device that generated the plurality of messages comprises an access point (AP), and

wherein to invoke the remedial action, the one or more processors are configured to perform at least one of restarting the AP, reconfiguring the AP with new operating parameters, downloading a new software version, or restarting a specific radio in the AP.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless device that generated the plurality of messages comprises a network component, and

wherein to invoke the remedial action, the one or more processors are configured to perform at least one of sending a message to a processor of the network component or sending a message to a power supply of the network component.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more features of the corresponding message comprise one or more of a type of the corresponding message, a relative position of the corresponding message in the plurality of messages, or a number of messages in the plurality of messages.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein to generate the message vector, the one or more processors are configured to:

provide, sequentially, each of the plurality of messages generated by the wireless device as input to a recursive neural network (RNN) with a previous output of the RNN as an additional input to the RNN, wherein an output of the RNN is the message vector.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the message cluster for the service quality is labeled as corresponding to a good service.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the message cluster for the service quality is labeled as corresponding to a poor service.

9. A method comprising:

generating, by processing circuitry and based on a plurality of messages generated by a wireless device, a message vector to indicate one or more features of a corresponding message of the plurality of messages;

determining, by the processing circuitry, whether a value of the message vector is satisfied by a range of values associated with a message cluster for a service quality, wherein determining whether value of the message vector is satisfied by the range of values associated with the message cluster comprises determining whether the value of the message vector is within a volume that defines the message cluster in a predefined dimensional space; and

invoking, by the processing circuitry and based on determining that the value of the message vector is within the range of values associated with the message cluster, a remedial action associated with the message cluster.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein invoking the remedial action comprises invoking the remedial action with respect to the wireless device that generated the plurality of messages.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the wireless device that generated the plurality of messages comprises an access point (AP), and

wherein invoking the remedial action comprising performing at least one of restarting the AP, reconfiguring the AP with new operating parameters, downloading a new software version, or restarting a specific radio in the AP.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the wireless device that generated the plurality of messages comprises a network component, and

wherein invoking the remedial action comprises performing at least one of sending a message to a processor of the network component or sending a message to a power supply of the network component.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more features of the corresponding message comprises one or more of a type of the corresponding message, a relative position of the corresponding message in the plurality of messages, or a number of messages in the plurality of messages.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein generating the message vector comprises providing, sequentially, each of the plurality of messages generated by the wireless device as input to a recursive neural network (RNN) with a previous output of the RNN as an additional input to the RNN, wherein an output of the RNN is the message vector.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the message cluster for the service quality is labeled as corresponding to a good service.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the message cluster for the service quality is labeled as correspond to a poor service.

17. Non-transitory computer readable storage media comprising instructions that, when executed, are configured to cause processing circuitry to:

generate, based on a plurality of messages generated by a wireless device, a message vector to indicate one or more features of a corresponding message of the plurality of messages;

determine whether a value of the message vector is satisfied by a range of values associated with a message cluster for a service quality, wherein to determine whether the value of the message vector is satisfied by the range of values associated with the message cluster comprises determining whether the value of the message vector is within a volume that defines the message cluster in a predefined dimensional space; and

invoke, based on determining that the value of the message vector is within the range of values associated with the message cluster, a remedial action associated with the message cluster.
