Abstract

Methods of powering a radio that is mounted on a tower of a cellular base station are provided in which a direct current (“DC”) power signal is provided to the radio over a power cable and a voltage level of the output of the power supply is adjusted so as to provide a substantially constant voltage at a first end of the power cable that is remote from the power supply. Related cellular base stations and programmable power supplies are also provided.

Claims (27)

1 . An apparatus configured to provide direct current (DC) power to a radio of a cellular base station through electrical conductors including first ends and radio ends, comprising:

a DC power supply comprising an output configured to provide a direct current of a DC power signal from the first ends to the radio ends which are configured to be electrically coupled to the radio of the cellular base station; and

wherein the DC power supply is configured to adjust a first DC voltage level, of the DC power signal, at the output responsive to a value of a parameter of a system including the DC power supply and the electrical conductors;

wherein the DC power supply is further configured to provide a second DC voltage level, of the DC power signal and at the radio ends, that exceeds a nominal DC voltage rating of the radio of the cellular base station.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the parameter, of the system including the DC power supply and the electrical conductors, comprises a resistance of the electrical conductors, a current level drawn from the output, or the second DC voltage level at the radio ends.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the DC power supply comprises a DC to DC voltage converter configured to receive a third DC voltage level and to provide the first DC voltage level.

4 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein a magnitude of the third DC voltage level is less than a magnitude of the first DC voltage level.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a magnitude of the second DC voltage level is less than a magnitude of a maximum DC voltage rating of the radio.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the second DC voltage level is within four volts of the maximum DC voltage rating of the radio.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a magnitude of the nominal DC voltage rating is forty eight volts.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the electrical conductors is part of a single power cable for connecting the DC power supply to the radio.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electrical conductors include at least two electrically connected conductive elements.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least two electrically connected conductive elements are a power cable.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the value is either calculated from other data or measured.

12 . A method for providing direct current (DC) power from a DC power supply to a radio of a cellular base station through electrical conductors including first ends and radio ends, comprising:

providing a direct current of a DC power signal from the first ends to the radio ends which are configured to be electrically coupled to the radio of the cellular base station; and

adjusting a first DC voltage level, of the DC power signal, at the first ends responsive to a value of a parameter of a system including the DC power supply and the electrical conductors, and providing a second DC voltage level, of the DC power signal and at the radio ends, that exceeds a nominal DC voltage level of the radio of the cellular base station.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the parameter, of the system including the DC power supply and the electrical conductors, comprises a resistance of the electrical conductors, a current level drawn from an output of the DC power supply, or the second DC voltage level at the radio ends.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving a third DC voltage level.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein a magnitude of the third DC voltage level is less than a magnitude of the first DC voltage level.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein a magnitude of the second DC voltage level is less than a magnitude of a maximum DC voltage rating of the radio.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the second DC voltage level is within four volts of the maximum DC voltage rating of the radio.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein a magnitude of the nominal DC voltage level is forty eight volts.

19 . The method of claim 12 , wherein each of the electrical conductors is part of a single power cable for connecting the DC power supply to the radio.

20 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the electrical conductors include at least two electrically connected conductive elements.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the at least two electrically connected conductive elements are a power cable.

22 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the value is either calculated from other data or measured.
