Abstract

A beverage dispensing machine (e.g., coffee maker) has a cooling unit. The cooling unit includes a thermal mass. The cooling unit is operable to freeze at least a portion of the thermal mass to provide a cold storage reservoir. The cooling unit also includes a passageway within which a brewed beverage flows, the passageway being in thermal communication with the thermal mass that cools the brewed beverage as it flows within the passageway to chill the brewed beverage before it is dispensed.

Claims (28)

1 . A coffee maker, comprising:

a cooling unit including

one or more volumes of thermal mass, the cooling unit operable to freeze at least a portion of the one or more volumes of thermal mass to provide a cold storage reservoir, and

a passageway within which a brewed beverage flows, the passageway being in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of thermal mass that cools the brewed beverage as it flows within the passageway to chill the brewed beverage before it is dispensed.

2 . The coffee maker of claim 1 , wherein the cooling unit includes one or more thermoelectric modules in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of thermal mass, the one or more thermoelectric modules being operable to freeze said at least a portion of the one or more volumes of thermal mass.

3 . The coffee maker of claim 1 , wherein the one or more volumes of thermal mass include one or more volumes of phase change material (PCM).

4 . The coffee maker of claim 3 , wherein the one or more volumes of thermal mass includes a thermally conductive body disposed between and in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of phase change material and the passageway.

5 . The coffee maker of claim 4 , wherein the thermally conductive body is a metal body.

6 . The coffee maker of claim 4 , wherein the one or more volumes of the phase change material are disposed in one or more cavities in the thermally conductive body.

7 . The coffee maker of claim 1 , wherein the passageway comprises an inclined surface.

8 . A beverage dispensing machine, comprising:

a cooling unit including

one or more volumes of thermal mass, the cooling unit operable to freeze at least a portion of the one or more volumes of thermal mass to provide a cold storage reservoir, and

a flowpath in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of thermal mass and via which a brewed beverage flows, the one or more volumes of thermal mass configured to cool the brewed beverage to chill the brewed beverage before it is dispensed.

9 . The beverage dispensing machine of claim 8 , wherein the cooling unit includes one or more thermoelectric modules in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of thermal mass, the one or more thermoelectric modules being operable to freeze said at least a portion the one or more volumes of thermal mass.

10 . The beverage dispensing machine of claim 8 , wherein the one or more volumes of the thermal mass include one or more volumes of phase change material (PCM).

11 . The beverage dispensing machine of claim 10 , wherein the one or more volumes of thermal mass includes a thermally conductive body disposed between and in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of phase change material and the flowpath.

12 . The beverage dispensing machine of claim 11 , wherein the thermally conductive body is a metal body.

13 . The beverage dispensing machine of claim 11 , wherein the one or more volumes of the phase change material are disposed in one or more cavities in the thermally conductive body.

14 . The beverage dispensing machine of claim 8 , wherein the flowpath comprises an inclined surface between a proximal end and a distal end of the flowpath.

15 . In combination with a beverage dispensing machine, a cooling unit comprising:

one or more volumes of thermal mass, the cooling unit operable to charge at least a portion of the one or more volumes of thermal mass such that the one or more volumes of thermal mass transition from one state to another to provide a cold storage reservoir, and

a passageway along which a beverage flows, the passageway being in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of thermal mass that cool the beverage as it flows along the passageway to chill the beverage before it is dispensed.

16 . The combination of claim 15 , further comprising one or more thermoelectric modules in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of thermal mass, the one or more thermoelectric modules being operable to charge said at least a portion the one or more volumes of thermal mass.

17 . The combination of claim 15 , wherein the one or more volumes of the thermal mass include one or more volumes of phase change material (PCM).

18 . The combination of claim 17 , wherein the one or more volumes of thermal mass includes a thermally conductive body disposed between and in thermal communication with the one or more volumes of phase change material and the passageway, the passageway comprising an inclined surface.

19 . The combination of claim 18 , wherein the thermally conductive body is a metal body.

20 . The combination of claim 18 , wherein the one or more volumes of the phase change material are disposed in one or more cavities in the thermally conductive body.
