Abstract

An enhanced vision system includes a first optic subsystem and a transparent photodetector subsystem disposed within a common housing. The first optic subsystem may include passive devices such as simple or compound lenses, active devices such as low-light enhancing image intensifiers, or a combination of passive and active devices. The transparent photodetector subsystem receives the visible image exiting the first optic subsystem and converts a portion of the electromagnetic energy in the visible image to a signal communicated to image analysis circuitry. On a real-time or near real-time basis, the image analysis circuitry detects and identifies structures, objects, and/or individuals in the visible image. The image analysis circuitry provides an output that includes information regarding the structure, objects, and individuals to the system user contemporaneous with the system user viewing the visible image.

Claims (26)

1. A vision system comprising:

a first device having an image acquisition device for acquiring a first image of a first scene within a first field-of-view of the first device;

a line-of-sight imaging circuitry in communication with the first device and which generates a first signal having first information representative of the first scene; and

a second device in communication with the line-of-sight imaging circuitry receives the first information, the second device comprising a transparent display subsystem through which passes electromagnetic energy of a second scene within a second field-of-view of the second device and which displays the first information.

2. The vision system according to claim 1 , wherein the first device further comprises the line-of-sight imaging circuitry, and the line-of-sight imaging circuitry is in wireless communication with the second device;

wherein the second device further comprises:

a transparent photodetector subsystem through which passes the electromagnetic energy of the second scene before subsequently passing through the transparent display subsystem and which generates a second signal having second information representative of the second scene; and

eyepiece optics through which a user views a composite image of the second scene and the first information;

wherein the first information includes the first image of the first scene, and when the first field-of-view overlaps the second field-of-view, the transparent display subsystem displays the first information according to the second information by displaying the first image of the first scene in alignment with the second scene; and

wherein the first device is a targeting scope attached to a firearm and the first scene is aligned with a target designator corresponding to a targeting point of the firearm.

3. The vision system according to claim 1 , wherein the second device further comprises a transparent photodetector subsystem through which passes the electromagnetic energy of the second scene before subsequently passing through the transparent display subsystem and which generates a second signal having second information representative of the second scene; and

wherein the transparent display subsystem displays the first information according to the second information.

4. The vision system according to claim 3 , wherein the first information includes the first image of the first scene, and when the first field-of-view overlaps the second field-of-view, the transparent display subsystem displays the first information according to the second information by displaying the first image of the first scene in alignment with the second scene.

5. The vision system according to claim 4 , wherein the first device is a targeting scope attached to a firearm and the first scene is aligned with a target designator corresponding to a targeting point of the firearm, and the first information includes the first image of the first scene with the target designator.

6. The vision system according to claim 5 , wherein the first device includes an active emitter, and the target designator is a laser dot output by the active emitter.

7. The vision system according to claim 3 , wherein the second device further comprises an image analysis circuitry receives the second signal and processes the second information, and outputs a third signal with third information; and

wherein the transparent display subsystem displays the first information and the third information simultaneously.

8. The vision system according to claim 7 , wherein the second information includes second images of the second scene, and the image analysis circuitry processes the second information by determining a parameter of one or more of a structure, an object, or a person in the second images.

9. The vision system according to claim 3 , wherein the second device further comprises an optic subsystem through which passes the electromagnetic energy of the second scene before successively passing through the transparent photodetector subsystem and then the transparent display subsystem.

10. The vision system according to claim 9 , wherein an operational aspect of the optic subsystem is controlled according to the second information.

11. The vision system according to claim 10 , wherein the operational aspect includes one or more of an aperture, a gain, a light filtering array, or a reflective element array of the optic subsystem.

12. The vision system according to claim 1 , wherein the second device further comprises eyepiece optics through which a user views a composite image of the second scene and the first information.

13. The vision system according to claim 1 , wherein the first device includes the line-of-sight imaging circuitry, and the line-of-sight imaging circuitry performs image analysis of the first image.

14. The vision system according to claim 13 , wherein the line-of-sight imaging circuitry is in wireless communication with the second device.

15. The vision system according to claim 14 , wherein the line-of-sight imaging circuitry performs image analysis of the first image to perform target acquisition, and the first information includes the target acquisition.

16. The vision system according to claim 1 , wherein the first device is a line-of-sight device, and the first information is indicative of a line-of-fire of a handheld weapon to which the first device is coupled.
