Abstract

A wireless device transmits a frame by determining a plurality of Resource Units (RUs) of the frame, providing pilots in a first RU of the frame at a first set of positions, providing pilots in a second RU of the frame at a second set of positions, and transmitting the frame. The first set of positions is different from the second set of positions. A wireless device receives a frame including an RU including pilots and processes the pilots. When an RU for the data symbol includes an odd-numbered lowest subcarrier, the pilots are included at a first set of positions in the resource unit. When the RU includes an even-numbered lowest subcarrier, the pilots are included at a second set of positions in the resource unit. The second set of positions is different from the first set of positions.

Claims (56)

1. A wireless device for transmitting a frame, the wireless device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device coupled to the processor and storing instructions that when executed by the processor cause the wireless device to perform steps comprising:

determining, by the wireless device, a plurality of Resource Units (RUs) of the frame;

providing, by the wireless device, a first plurality of pilots in one or more RUs of the plurality of RUs at a first set of positions, respectively; and

transmitting, by the wireless device, the frame,

wherein the frame is an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) frame and the plurality of RUs include respective pluralities of subcarriers,

wherein the first set of positions are uniformly spaced,

wherein a first RU is a 26-subcarrier RU and a second RU of the frame is a 52-subcarrier RU,

wherein the first set of positions correspond to non-null positions of a Long Training field (LTF) of the frame, and

wherein when the frame includes a 4× High Efficiency (HE) Long Training Field (HE-LTF), the first RU carries two pilots, and the second RU carries four pilots.

2. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein when the frame includes a 2×HE-LTF, the first RU carries one pilot, and the second RU carries two pilots.

3. The wireless device of claim 2 wherein no pilots are carried in a central 26 subcarrier RU of the frame.

The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein a tone spacing of the pilots includes 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the first RU, 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the first RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the first RU, 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the second RU, and 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the second RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the second RU.

5. The wireless device of claim 4 wherein the tone spacing does not include any of DC subcarriers of the frame.

6. A wireless device for receiving a frame, the wireless device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device coupled to the processor and storing instructions that when executed by the processor cause the wireless device to perform steps comprising:

receiving, by the wireless device, a plurality of Resource Units (RUs) of the frame;

extracting, by the wireless device, a first plurality of pilots from one or more RUs of the plurality RU at a first set of positions, respectively; and

processing, by the wireless device, the frame using the first plurality of pilots,

wherein the frame is an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) frame and the plurality of RUs include respective pluralities of subcarriers,

wherein the first set of positions are uniformly spaced,

wherein a first RU is a 26-subcarrier RU and a second RU of the frame is a 52-subcarrier RU,

wherein the first set of positions correspond to non-null positions of a Long Training field (LTF) of the frame, and

wherein when the frame includes a 4× High Efficiency (HE) Long Training Field (HE-LTF), the first RU carries two pilots, and the second RU carries four pilots.

7. The wireless device of claim 6 , wherein when the frame includes a 2×HE-LTF, the first RU carries one pilot, and the second RU carries two pilots.

8. The wireless device of claim 7 wherein no pilots are carried in a central 26 subcarrier RU of the frame.

9. The wireless device of claim 6 , wherein a tone spacing of the pilots includes 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the first RU, 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the first RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the first RU, 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the second RU, and 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the second RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the second RU.

10. The wireless device of claim 9 wherein the tone spacing does not include any of DC subcarriers of the frame.

11. A method for transmitting a frame by a wireless device, the method comprising:

determining, by the wireless device, a plurality of Resource Units (RUs) of the frame;

providing, by the wireless device, a first plurality of pilots in one or more RUs of the plurality of RUs at a first set of positions, respectively; and

transmitting, using a transmitter of the wireless device, the frame,

wherein the frame is an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) frame and the plurality of RUs include respective pluralities of subcarriers,

wherein the first set of positions are uniformly spaced,

wherein a first RU is a 26-subcarrier RU and a second RU of the frame is a 52-subcarrier RU,

wherein the first set of positions correspond to non-null positions of a Long Training field (LTF) of the frame, and

wherein when the frame includes a 4× High Efficiency (HE) Long Training Field (HE-LTF), the first RU carries two pilots, and the second RU carries four pilots.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein when the frame includes a 2×HE-LTF, the first RU carries one pilot, and the second RU carries two pilots.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein no pilots are carried in a central 26 subcarrier RU of the frame.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein a tone spacing of the pilots includes 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the first RU, 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the first RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the first RU, 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the second RU, and 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the second RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the second RU.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the tone spacing does not include any of DC subcarriers of the frame.

16. A method for receiving a frame by a wireless device, the method comprising:

receiving, using a receiver of the wireless device, a plurality of Resource Units (RUs) of the frame;

extracting, by the wireless device, a first plurality of pilots from one or more RUs of the plurality RU at a first set of positions, respectively; and

processing, by the wireless device, the frame using the first plurality of pilots,

wherein the frame is an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) frame and the plurality of RUs include respective pluralities of subcarriers,

wherein the first set of positions are uniformly spaced,

wherein a first RU is a 26-subcarrier RU and a second RU of the frame is a 52-subcarrier RU,

wherein the first set of positions correspond to non-null positions of a Long Training field (LTF) of the frame, and

wherein when the frame includes a 4× High Efficiency (HE) Long Training Field (HE-LTF), the first RU carries two pilots, and the second RU carries four pilots.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein when the frame includes a 2×HE-LTF, the first RU carries one pilot, and the second RU carries two pilots.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein no pilots are carried in a central 26 subcarrier RU of the frame.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein tone spacing of the pilots includes 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the first RU, 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the first RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the first RU, 12 subcarriers between two of the pilots of the second RU, and 6 subcarriers between outer edges of the second RU and respective nearest pilot tone positions of the outer edges of the second RU.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the tone spacing does not include any of DC subcarriers of the frame.
