Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatus for smart electric power grid communication are disclosed in the present invention. At least one grid element transmits at least one registration message over an Internet Protocol (IP)-based network to at least one coordinator. The at least one coordinator registers the at least one grid element upon receipt of the at least one registration message. The at least one grid element automatically and/or autonomously transforms into at least one active grid element for actively functioning in the electric power grid. The at least one coordinator tracks based on revenue grade metrology an amount of power available for the electric power grid or a curtailment power available from the at least one active grid element.

Claims (38)

1. A system for smart electric power grid communication, comprising:

a coordinator operable to receive at least one message from at least one active grid element over an Internet Protocol (IP)-based network;

wherein the at least one active grid element is operable to track an amount of power supply available for the electric power grid or a curtailment power available from at least one power consuming device;

wherein the at least one message includes information related to the at least one power consuming device and its functioning in the electric power grid in real time or near real time;

wherein the functioning of the at least one power consuming device in the electric power grid is confirmed by the at least one active grid element;

wherein the at least one active grid element includes at least one smart thermostat operable for two-way communication with at least one power consuming device;

wherein the at least one smart thermostat generates a profile comprising an energy supply pattern or an energy usage pattern for the at least one power consuming device;

wherein the profile includes a baseline power consumption for the at least one power consuming device;

wherein the at least one power consuming device includes at least one heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit; and

wherein the at least one smart thermostat is operable to reduce a flow of power to the at least one HVAC unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coordinator is operable to communicate with a database, and wherein transformation of at least one grid element into the at least one active grid element is registered in the database.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the profile includes a projected amount of power available to be reduced to the at least one power consuming device.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one active grid element includes at least one smart meter.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one active grid element is operable for remote update over the IP-based network with the coordinator.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the at least one power consuming device includes run times, set point temperatures, and/or duty cycle information for the at least one power consuming device.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coordinator is operable to wirelessly deliver system updates to the at least one active grid element.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one active grid element is operable to change a setting of the at least one power consuming device.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one active load client includes at least one load control switch.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one load control switch is operable to cut off a flow of power to the at least one power consuming device.

11. A method for smart electric power grid communication, comprising:

at least one active grid element transmitting at least one message over an Internet Protocol (IP)-based network to at least one coordinator;

wherein the at least one active grid element is operable to track an amount of power supply available for the electric power grid or a curtailment power available from at least one power consuming device;

wherein the at least one message includes information related to the at least one active grid element functioning in the electric power grid in real time or near real time;

wherein the at least one power consuming device functioning in the electric power grid is confirmed by the at least one active grid element;

wherein the at least one active grid element includes at least one smart thermostat operable for two-way communication with at least one power consuming device;

the at least one smart thermostat generating a profile comprising an energy supply pattern or an energy usage pattern for the at least one power consuming device;

wherein the profile includes a baseline power consumption for the at least one power consuming device;

wherein the at least one power consuming device includes at least one heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit; and

wherein the at least one smart thermostat reduces a flow of power to the at least one HVAC unit.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the at least one coordinator communicating with a database, and wherein transformation of at least one grid element into the at least one active grid element is registered in the database.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising updating the at least one active grid element remotely via the at least one coordinator over the IP-based network.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one active grid element has a profile comprising an energy supply pattern or an energy usage pattern.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the profile includes a projected amount of power available to be reduced to the at least one power consuming device.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the information related to the at least one power consuming device includes run times, set point temperatures, and/or duty cycle information for the at least one power consuming device.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the coordinator is operable to wirelessly deliver system updates to the at least one active grid element.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one active load client includes at least one load control switch.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising the at least one load control switch cutting off a flow of power to the at least one power consuming device.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein a smart meter measures and verifies the information relating to the at least one active grid element automatically functioning.
