Abstract

An electrical combination, a tool system, an electric motor, a battery pack, and operating and manufacturing methods. The tool may include a tool housing, a motor supported by the tool housing, the motor having a nominal outer diameter of up to about 80 millimeters (mm), the motor being operable to output at least about 2760 watts (W), and a tool terminal electrically connected to the motor; a battery pack including a pack housing defining a volume of the battery pack, the volume being up to about 5.2×10 6 cubic millimeters (mm 3 ), battery cells supported by the pack housing, the battery cells being electrically connected and having a nominal voltage of up to about 80 volts (V), and a pack terminal electrically connectable to the tool terminal to transfer current between the battery pack and the tool; and a controller operable to control the transfer of current.

Claims (49)

1. A tool system comprising:

a tool including:

a tool housing,

a motor supported by the tool housing, the motor including an output shaft operable to drive a tool element, the motor having a nominal outer diameter of up to about 80 mm, and

a tool terminal electrically connected to the motor;

a battery pack including:

a pack housing,

battery cells supported by the pack housing, the battery cells being electrically connected and having a nominal voltage of up to about 80 V, and

a pack terminal electrically connectable to the tool terminal to transfer current between the battery pack and the tool; and

a controller operable to control the transfer of current, wherein the motor provides an output of at least about 2760 Watts when powered by the battery pack.

2. The tool system of claim 1 , wherein the motor is operable to output at least about 3000 W.

3. The tool system of claim 1 , wherein the pack housing is connectable to and supportable by the device housing such that the battery pack is supportable by the tool.

4. The tool system of claim 1 , wherein each of the battery cells has a diameter of up to about 21 mm and a length of up to about 71 mm, and

wherein each of the battery cells has a capacity of between about 3.0 Ah and about 5.0 Ah.

5. The tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery pack includes up to 20 battery cells connected in series.

6. The tool system of claim 1 , wherein the battery cells are operable to output a sustained operating discharge current of between about 40 A and about 60 A.

7. The tool system of claim 1 , further comprising:

control electronics including the controller, the control electronics having a volume of up to about 920 mm 3 , and

wherein the motor has a volume of up to about 443,619 mm 3 .

8. The tool system of claim 1 , further comprising:

control electronics including the controller, the control electronics having a weight of up to about 830 g,

wherein the motor has a weight of up to about 4.6 lbs., and

wherein the battery pack has a weight of up to about 6 lbs.

9. The tool system of claim 1 , wherein the motor is configured to provide the output of at least 2760 Watts for a sustained duration.

10. The tool system of claim 9 , wherein the sustained duration is at least 5 minutes.

11. A power tool comprising:

a housing;

a brushless direct current (BLDC) motor supported by the housing, the BLDC motor including an output shaft operable to drive a tool element, the BLDC motor having a nominal outer diameter of up to about 80 mm;

a battery pack including a plurality of battery cells electrically connected and having a nominal voltage of up to about 80 V; and

a controller operable to control the transfer of current between the battery pack and the BLDC motor, wherein the BLDC motor provides an output of at least about 2760 Watts when powered by the battery pack.

12. The power tool of claim 11 , wherein the BLDC motor is operable to output at least about 3000 W.

13. The power tool of claim 11 , wherein each of the battery cells has a diameter of up to about 21 mm and a length of up to about 71 mm, and

wherein each of the battery cells has a capacity of between about 3.0 Ah and about 5.0 Ah.

14. The power tool of claim 11 , wherein the battery pack includes up to 20 battery cells connected in series.

15. The power tool of claim 11 , wherein the battery cells are operable to output a sustained operating discharge current of between about 40 A and about 60 A.

16. The power tool of claim 11 , further comprising:

control electronics including the controller, the control electronics having a volume of up to about 920 mm 3 , and

wherein the BLDC motor has a volume of up to about 443,619 mm 3 .

17. The power tool of claim 11 , further comprising:

control electronics including the controller, the control electronics having a weight of up to about 830 g,

wherein the BLDC motor has a weight of up to about 4.6 lbs., and

wherein the battery pack has a weight of up to about 6 lbs.

18. The power tool of claim 11 , wherein the motor is configured to provide the output of at least 2760 Watts for a sustained duration of at least 5 minutes.

19. A power tool comprising:
