Abstract

A minimally invasive miniaturized percutaneous mechanical circulatory support system for transcatheter delivery of a pump to the heart that actively unloads the left ventricle by pumping blood from the left ventricle into the ascending aorta and systemic circulation. The pump may include a tubular housing, a motor, an impeller configured to be rotated by the motor, and a distal tip of the pump. The tip may include a guidewire lumen with a curved and/or extended contour. The system may have an insertion tool having a tubular body and configured to axially movably receive the circulatory support device, and an introducer sheath configured to axially movably receive the insertion tool. A coupling allows for connection and disconnection of the insertion tool and introducer sheath. The coupling may include hexagonal portions for self-alignment and haptic feedback.

Claims (33)

1 . A mechanical circulatory support system, comprising:

a circulatory support catheter, comprising a circulatory support device carried by an elongate flexible catheter shaft, the circulatory support device comprising a tubular housing, a motor, and an impeller configured to be rotated by the motor;

an insertion tool having a tubular body and configured to axially movably receive the circulatory support device;

an introducer sheath, having a tubular body and configured to axially movably receive the insertion tool; and

a hexagonal coupling configured to couple the insertion tool and introducer sheath.

2 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the hexagonal coupling comprises a male mating part configured to couple with the insertion tool and a female mating part configured to couple with the introducer sheath.

3 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 2 , wherein the male mating part comprises a hexagonal distal portion.

4 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 3 , wherein the hexagonal distal portion comprises a truncated hexagonal cone.

5 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 3 , wherein the hexagonal distal portion comprises an indent portion extending circumferentially around the hexagonal distal portion approximately halfway along a longitudinal axis of the hexagonal distal portion.

6 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 3 , wherein the hexagonal distal portion of the male mating part is configured to mate with a hexagonal receiving portion of the female mating part.

7 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 2 , wherein the female mating part comprises a hexagonal receiving portion configured to self-align the male mating part with the female mating part in response to a force applied along an axial direction.

8 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the hexagonal coupling is configured to provide haptic feedback when the insertion tool is coupled with the introducer sheath.

9 . A mechanical circulatory support system, comprising:

a circulatory support catheter, comprising a circulatory support device carried by an elongate flexible catheter shaft, the circulatory support device comprising a tubular housing, a motor, and an impeller configured to be rotated by the motor;

an insertion tool having a tubular body and configured to axially movably receive the circulatory support device; and

a coupling configured to couple the insertion tool and an introducer, wherein the coupling is configured to allow removal and replacement of the introducer from the insertion tool.

10 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 9 , wherein the coupling comprises a threaded coupling.

11 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 10 , wherein the coupling comprises a bayonet coupling.

12 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 10 , wherein the coupling comprises a push-pull coupling.

13 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 10 , wherein the introducer comprises a fixed size introducer.

14 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 10 , wherein the introducer comprises an expandable introducer.

15 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 10 , wherein the coupling comprises a hexagonal coupling.

16 . A mechanical circulatory support system, comprising:

an elongate flexible catheter shaft, having a proximal end and a distal end; and

a circulatory support device carried by the distal end of the catheter shaft, the circulatory support device comprising a tubular housing comprising an inlet tube, a distal tip attached to a distal end of the inlet tube, a motor, and an impeller configured to be rotated by the motor, wherein the distal tip has an outer diameter greater than an outer diameter of the inlet tube.

17 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 16 , wherein the outer diameter of the distal tip is at a proximal end of the distal tip, and the outer diameter of the inlet tube is at a distal end of the inlet tube.

18 . A mechanical circulatory support system, comprising:

an elongate flexible catheter shaft, having a proximal end and a distal end;

a circulatory support device carried by the distal end of the catheter shaft, the circulatory support device comprising a tubular housing, a motor, and an impeller configured to be rotated by the motor;

the tubular housing of the circulatory support device comprising an inlet tube coupled with a motor housing, the inlet tube having one or more distal pump inlets and one or more proximal pump outlets, wherein a distal end of the inlet tube comprises a tip, the tip comprising a lumen extending through the tip with a flared distal opening.

19 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 18 , wherein a length and inner diameter of the lumen define a curvature that is similar to a radius of curvature of a guidewire configured to be received into the lumen.

20 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 18 , wherein the lumen comprises a flared proximal opening.

21 . The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 18 , wherein the lumen extends through a proximal extension that protrudes proximally from the tip.
