Abstract

This disclosure relates generally to optically-switchable devices, and more particularly, to systems, apparatus, and methods for controlling optically-switchable devices. In some implementations, an apparatus for controlling one or more optically-switchable devices includes a processing unit, a voltage regulator and a polarity switch. The processing unit can generate: a command voltage signal based on a target optical state of an optically-switchable device, and a polarity control signal. The voltage regulator can receive power at a first voltage and increase or decrease a magnitude of the first voltage based on the command voltage signal to provide a DC voltage signal at a regulated voltage. A polarity switch can receive the DC voltage signal at the regulated voltage to maintain or reverse a polarity of the DC voltage signal based on the polarity control signal. The polarity switch can output the DC voltage signal at the regulated voltage and at the polarity based on the polarity control signal to power the optically-switchable device. In some other implementations, the apparatus includes a processing unit, an energy storage device, and first and second voltage regulators.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus for controlling at least one optically switchable window, the apparatus comprising:

a voltage regulator configured to receive power at a first voltage and operatively coupled to a processing unit;

the processing unit comprising a processor and a memory communicatively coupled to the processor, wherein the memory stores instructions configured to:

generate a command voltage signal based on a target optical state of the at least one optically switchable window,

disable functionality of the processing unit and thereby cause the processing unit to enter a sleep mode,

wakeup the processing unit from the sleep mode in response, at least in part, to an internal wakeup command and/or an interrupt signal from another component, and

after waking up from the sleep mode, receive a signal and/or send a command.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to disable functionality comprises configuring the processing unit in a reduced-functionality mode.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to disable functionality comprises configuring the processing unit in a low-power mode.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the low-power mode consumes less power than in a fully functional mode.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the instructions to wakeup from the sleep mode is in response, at least in part, to the internal wakeup command, and

the internal wakeup command is issued periodically at an interval.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the instructions to wakeup from the sleep mode is in response, at least in part, to the internal wakeup command, and

the internal wakeup command is issued based on a time.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the time is based on a timer.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instruction to wakeup from the sleep mode is in response, at least in part, to the interrupt signal from another component.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the interrupt signal is from a controller.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are further configured to disable, after receiving the signal and/or sending the command, functionality of the processing unit to enter the sleep mode.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are further configured to repeatedly:

wakeup the processing unit from the sleep mode in response, at least in part, to the internal wakeup command and/or the interrupt signal from another component, and disable, functionality of the processing unit to enter the sleep mode after receiving the signal and/or sending the command.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising an analog to digital converter (ADC), and wherein, when the processing unit is awake:

the received signal is from the ADC, and/or

the sent command is sent to the ADC.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the command is sent to one or more components to control a tint state of the at least one optically switchable window.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a communications component, wherein the communications component is configured to receive power during the sleep mode.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the interrupt signal is from the communications component.

16. A method for controlling at least one optically switchable window, the method comprising:

generating, by a processing unit of an apparatus and the processing unit comprising a processor and a memory communicatively coupled to the processor, a command voltage signal based on a target optical state of the at least one optically switchable window, wherein the apparatus further comprises a voltage regulator configured to receive power at a first voltage and operatively coupled to a processing unit;

disabling, by the processing unit, functionality of the processing unit and thereby causing the processing unit to enter a sleep mode;

waking up, by the processing unit, the processing unit from the sleep mode in response, at least in part, to an internal wakeup command and/or an interrupt signal from another component; and

receiving, after waking up from the sleep mode, a signal and/or sending a command.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein disabling the functionality comprises configuring the processing unit in a low-power mode.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein:

waking up from the sleep mode is in response, at least in part, to the internal wakeup command, and

the internal wakeup command is issued periodically at an interval.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein waking up from the sleep mode is in response, at least in part, to the interrupt signal from another component.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising disabling, after receiving the signal and/or sending the command, functionality of the processing unit and thereby causing the processing unit to enter the sleep mode.
