Abstract

Some embodiments relate to asphalt shingle waste coatings in roofing shingles of roofing systems. A roofing system comprises a plurality of roofing shingles. The plurality of roofing shingles, when installed on a roof substrate, comprises exposed surfaces and unexposed surfaces. The plurality of roofing shingles comprises asphalt shingle waste coatings on or only on at least one of the unexposed surfaces. The plurality of roofing shingles comprises asphalt coatings on or only on at least one of the exposed surfaces.

Claims (66)

1. A roofing shingle comprising:

a substrate,

wherein the substrate has a top surface and a bottom surface;

a first asphalt shingle waste coating,

wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating is located on at least a portion of the top surface of the substrate,

wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating comprises a first asphalt shingle waste;

wherein the first asphalt shingle waste comprises a waste asphalt and a limestone;

a second asphalt shingle waste coating,

wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating is located on at least a portion of the bottom surface of the substrate;

wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprises a second asphalt shingle waste;

wherein, when installed on a roof, the second asphalt shingle waste coating is configured to contact a roof substrate; and

an asphalt coating,

wherein the asphalt coating is located on at least a portion of the first asphalt shingle waste coating;

wherein the asphalt coating is substantially free of the first asphalt shingle waste;

wherein the asphalt coating is substantially free of the second asphalt shingle waste.

2. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises at least one of a fiberglass mat, a polyester mat, or any combination thereof.

3. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating comprises 10% to 70% by weight of the limestone, with a remainder of the first asphalt shingle waste coating comprising at least one of an asphalt, the waste asphalt, or any combination thereof.

4. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating further comprises an asphalt;

wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating comprises:

1% to 99% by weight of the first asphalt shingle waste based on a total weight of the asphalt and the first asphalt shingle waste; and

1% to 99% by weight of the asphalt based on the total weight of the asphalt and the first asphalt shingle waste.

5. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating further comprises an asphalt;

wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating comprises:

30% to 60% by weight of the asphalt and the waste asphalt based on a total weight of the first asphalt shingle waste coating; and

40% to 70% by weight of the limestone based on the total weight of the first asphalt shingle waste coating.

6. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating further comprises an asphalt;

wherein the first asphalt shingle waste coating comprises:

30% to 50% by weight of the asphalt and the waste asphalt based on a total weight of the first asphalt shingle waste coating; and

50% to 70% by weight of the limestone based on the total weight of the first asphalt shingle waste coating.

7. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprises a waste asphalt and a limestone.

8. The roofing shingle of claim 7 , wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprises 10% to 70% by weight of the limestone, with a remainder of the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprising at least one of an asphalt, the waste asphalt, or any combination thereof.

9. The roofing shingle of claim 7 , wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating further comprises an asphalt;

wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprises:

1% to 99% by weight of the second asphalt shingle waste based on a total weight of the asphalt and the second asphalt shingle waste; and

1% to 99% by weight of the asphalt based on the total weight of the asphalt and the second asphalt shingle waste.

10. The roofing shingle of claim 7 , wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating further comprises an asphalt;

wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprises:

30% to 60% by weight of the asphalt and the waste asphalt based on a total weight of the second asphalt shingle waste coating; and

40% to 70% by weight of the limestone based on the total weight of the second asphalt shingle waste coating.

11. The roofing shingle of claim 7 , wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating further comprises an asphalt;

wherein the second asphalt shingle waste coating comprises:

30% to 50% by weight of the asphalt and the waste asphalt based on a total weight of the second asphalt shingle waste coating; and

50% to 70% by weight of the limestone based on the total weight of the second asphalt shingle waste coating.

12. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the asphalt coating comprises:

10% to 70% by weight of at least one filler based on a total weight of the asphalt coating; and

30% to 90% by weight of an asphalt based on the total weight of the asphalt coating.

13. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the asphalt coating comprises an unoxidized asphalt.

14. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the asphalt coating comprises a polymer modified asphalt.

15. The roofing shingle of claim 14 , the polymer modified asphalt comprises at least one of a poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) (SBS), a poly(styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene) (SEBS), an atactic polypropylene (APP), an isotactic polypropylene (IPP), or any combination thereof.

16. A roofing system comprising:

a roof substrate; and

at least one roofing shingle, wherein the at least one roofing shingle comprises:

a substrate,

wherein the substrate has a top surface and a bottom surface;

wherein at least a portion of the bottom surface of the substrate contacts the roof substrate;

an asphalt shingle waste coating,

wherein the asphalt shingle waste coating is located on at least a portion of the top surface of the substrate,

wherein the asphalt shingle waste coating comprises an asphalt shingle waste;

wherein the asphalt shingle waste comprises a waste asphalt and a limestone; and

an asphalt coating,

wherein the asphalt coating is located on at least a portion of the asphalt shingle waste coating,

wherein the asphalt coating is substantially free of the asphalt shingle waste.

17. The roofing system of claim 16 , wherein the asphalt coating comprises an unoxidized asphalt.
