Abstract

The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for delivering and/or withdrawing a substance or substances such as blood or interstitial fluid, from subjects, e.g., from the skin and/or from beneath the skin. In one aspect, the present invention is generally directed to devices and methods for withdrawing or extracting blood from a subject, e.g., from the skin and/or from beneath the skin, using devices containing a fluid transporter (for example, one or more microneedles), and a storage chamber having an internal pressure less than atmospheric pressure prior to receiving blood. In some cases, the device may be self-contained, and in certain instances, the device can be applied to the skin, and activated to withdraw blood from the subject. The device, in some cases, may be interfaced with external equipment to determine an analyte contained within a fluid contained within or collected by the device. For example, the device may be mounted or engaged on an external holder, the device may include a port for transporting fluid out of the device, the device may include a window for interrogating a fluid contained within the device, or the like. The device, or a portion thereof, may then be processed to determine the blood and/or an analyte within the blood, alone or with an external apparatus. For example, blood may be withdrawn from the device, and/or the device may contain sensors or agents able to determine the blood and/or an analyte suspected of being contained in the blood. Other aspects of the present invention are directed at other devices for withdrawing blood (or other bodily fluids, e.g., interstitial fluid), kits involving such devices, methods of making such devices, methods of using such devices, and the like.

Claims (36)

1 - 87 . (canceled)

88 . A device for application to a subject's skin, comprising:

an actuator comprising a button;

a reversibly deformable structure that moves between a first configuration and a second configuration upon actuation by the actuator;

a cutter configured to move into a position insertable into the skin of the subject upon actuation by the actuator; and

a detachable portion configured to receive a fluid released from the skin of the subject by the cutter, the detachable portion comprising an interface engageable with an external apparatus.

89 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the external apparatus comprises a sensor for determining an analyte.

90 . The device of claim 89 , wherein the sensor is a pH sensor, an optical sensor, an ion sensor, or a colorimetric sensor.

91 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the external apparatus comprises one or more reagents able to interact with an analyte.

92 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the cutter comprises a needle.

93 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the cutter comprises a microneedle.

94 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the cutter comprises a blade.

95 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the first configuration of the reversibly deformable structure has a concave shape.

96 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the first configuration of the reversibly deformable structure has a dome shape.

97 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the device comprises a vacuum source that is configured to create a vacuum upon actuation of the device.

98 . The device of claim 97 , wherein the device comprises a vacuum source that is configured to manually create a vacuum upon actuation of the device.

99 . The device of claim 88 , wherein the detachable portion further comprises paper.

100 . A device for application to a subject's skin, comprising:

an actuator comprising a button;

a mechanical structure able to create a vacuum within the device upon actuation by the actuator;

a cutter configured to move into a position insertable into the skin of the subject upon actuation by the actuator; and

a detachable portion configured to receive a fluid released from the skin of the subject by the cutter, the detachable portion comprising an interface engageable with an external apparatus.

101 . The device of claim 100 , wherein the external apparatus comprises one or more sensors for determining an analyte.

102 . The device of claim 100 , wherein the cutter comprises a needle.

103 . The device of claim 100 , wherein the first configuration has a concave shape.

104 . The device of claim 100 , wherein the device comprises a vacuum source that is configured to create a vacuum upon actuation of the device.

105 . The device of claim 104 , wherein the device comprises a vacuum source that is configured to manually create a vacuum upon actuation of the device.

106 . A method, comprising:

removing a detachable portion from a device, the device comprising an actuator comprising a button, a mechanical structure able to create a vacuum within the device upon actuation by the actuator, and a cutter configured to move into a position insertable into the skin of a subject upon actuation by the actuator, wherein the detachable portion contains blood released from the skin of the subject by the cutter; and

engaging the detachable portion with an external apparatus.

107 . The method of claim 106 , wherein the external apparatus comprises one or more sensors for determining an analyte suspected of being present within the blood.

108 . The method of claim 106 , wherein the mechanical structure comprises a reversibly deformable structure configured to move between a first configuration and a second configuration upon actuation by the actuator.

109 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising causing the blood to flow out of the detachable portion after engaging the detachable portion with the external holder.

110 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising determining an analyte present within the blood within the detachable portion.

111 . The method of claim 106 , wherein the detachable portion comprises paper, and the method further comprises determining an analyte present within the paper.

112 . The method of claim 111 , comprising removing the paper from the detachable portion.
