Abstract

Controlling the color temperature of a composite light source including at least one discrete-spectrum light source is disclosed. For example, the color temperature of a composite light source including at least one discrete-spectrum light source may be determined and/or adjusted based on one or more of the ambient color temperature of a space, the actual temperature of the space, the relative brightness of the space, the occupancy of the space, a time clock, a demand response command (e.g., from an electrical utility), the absolute location of the composite light source, the location of the composite light source relative to other light sources, inputs from a camera or other external devices, the operation of appliances or other machines in the vicinity of the composite light source, media content being utilized in the vicinity of the composite light source, and/or other sensor inputs.

Claims (57)

1 . A color temperature controller, comprising:

control circuitry to:

receive data indicative of a target color temperature and a target intensity;

determine an output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light sources such that, when combined, the color temperature and intensity contributed by each of the plurality of light sources produces a combined luminous output at the received target color temperature and the received target intensity;

wherein at least two of the plurality of light sources include light sources having different output spectra; and

cause each of the plurality of operatively coupled light sources to produce the respective determined output intensity.

2 . The controller of claim 1 , further comprising:

memory circuitry communicatively coupled to the control circuitry, the memory circuitry to store data representative of output color temperature as a function of output intensity for each light source included in the plurality of light sources;

wherein to determine the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources, the control circuitry to:

retrieve from the memory circuitry the data representative of output color temperature as a function of output intensity for each respective one of the light sources included in the plurality of light sources; and

determine, using the retrieved output color temperature data as a function of output intensity, the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources to produce the combined luminous output at the received target color temperature and the received target intensity.

3 . The controller of claim 2 wherein to cause each of the plurality of light sources to produce the respective determined output intensity, the control circuitry to further:

transmit a wireless message that includes data representative of the respective determined output intensity to each of the plurality of light sources.

4 . The controller of claim 1 wherein to determine the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources, the control circuitry to further:

determine the output intensity of each respective one of:

at least one continuous spectrum light source; and

at least one discrete spectrum light source.

5 . The controller of claim 1 wherein to determine the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources, the control circuitry to further:

determine the output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light-emitting diode (LED) light sources.

6 . The controller of claim 1 wherein the plurality of light sources are disposed in a single light fixture.

7 . The controller of claim 1 wherein the plurality of light sources are distributed in two or more light fixtures.

8 . A color temperature control method, comprising:

receiving, by color temperature controller control circuitry, data indicative of a target color temperature and a target intensity;

determining, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, an output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light sources such that, when combined, the color temperature and the intensity contributed by each of the plurality of light sources produces a combined luminous output at the received target color temperature and the received target intensity;

wherein at least two of the plurality of light sources include light sources having different output spectra; and

causing, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, each of the plurality of operatively coupled light sources to produce the respective determined output intensity.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein determining the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further comprises:

retrieving, from communicatively coupled memory circuitry data representative of output color temperature as a function of output intensity for each respective one of the light sources included in the plurality of light sources; and

determining, by the color temperature controller control circuitry using the retrieved output intensity and color temperature data, an output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources to produce the combined luminous output at the received target color temperature and the received target intensity.

10 . The method of claim 9 wherein causing each of the plurality of operatively coupled light sources to produce the respective determined output intensity further comprises:

causing, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, a transmission of a wireless message that includes data representative of the respective determined output intensity to each of the plurality of light sources.

11 . The method of claim 8 wherein determining the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further comprises:

determining, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, the output intensity for each respective one of:

at least one continuous spectrum light source; and

at least one discrete spectrum light source.

12 . The method of claim 8 wherein determining the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further comprises:

determining, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, the output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light-emitting diode (LED) light sources.

13 . The method of claim 8 wherein determining the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further comprises:

determining, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, the output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light sources disposed in a single light fixture.

14 . The method of claim 8 wherein determining the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further comprises:

determining, by the color temperature controller control circuitry, the output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light sources distributed in two or more light fixtures.

15 . A non-transitory, machine-readable, storage device that includes instructions that, when executed by color temperature controller control circuitry, cause the control circuitry to:

receive data indicative of a target color temperature and a target intensity;

determine an output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light sources such that, when combined, the color temperature and intensity contributed by each of the plurality of light sources produces a combined luminous output at the received target color temperature and the received target intensity;

wherein at least two of the plurality of light sources include light sources having a different output spectra; and

cause each of the plurality of operatively coupled light sources to produce the respective determined output intensity.

The non-transitory, machine-readable, storage device of claim 15 wherein the instructions that cause the color temperature controller control circuitry to determine the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further cause the color temperature controller control circuitry to, for each of the plurality of light sources:

retrieve from communicatively coupled memory circuitry, data representative of output color temperature as a function of output intensity for each respective one of the light sources included in the plurality of light sources; and

determine, using the retrieved output color temperature data as a function of output intensity, the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources to produce the combined luminous output at the received target color temperature and the received target intensity.

The non-transitory, machine-readable, storage device of claim 16 wherein the instructions that cause the color temperature controller control circuitry to cause each of the plurality of light sources to provide the respective output intensity further causes the color temperature controller control circuitry to:

cause a transmission of a wireless message that includes data representative of the respective determined output intensity to each of the plurality of light sources.

The non-transitory, machine-readable, storage device of claim 15 wherein the instructions that cause the color temperature controller control circuitry to determine the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further causes the color temperature controller control circuitry to:

determine the respective output intensity for each of:

at least one continuous spectrum light source; and

at least one discrete spectrum light source.

The non-transitory, machine-readable, storage device of claim 15 wherein the instructions that cause the color temperature controller control circuitry to determine the output intensity for each respective one of the plurality of light sources further causes the color temperature controller control circuitry to:

determine the output intensity for each respective one of a plurality of light-emitting diode (LED) light sources.
