Abstract

A mobile robot is configured for operation in a commercial or industrial setting, such as an office building or retail store. The robot can patrol one or more routes within a building, and can detect violations of security policies by objects, building infrastructure and security systems, or individuals. In response to the detected violations, the robot can perform one or more security operations. The robot can include a removable fabric panel, enabling sensors within the robot body to capture signals that propagate through the fabric. In addition, the robot can scan RFID tags of objects within an area, for instance coupled to store inventory. Likewise, the robot can generate or update one or more semantic maps for use by the robot in navigating an area and for measuring compliance with security policies.

Claims (29)

1 . A centralized security system, comprising:

a central server; and

one or more remote security systems located within a building and communicatively coupled to the central server, the one or more remote security systems configured to:

receive, from the central server, a definition of an inclusion geofence corresponding to a portion of the building, the definition including a boundary of the inclusion geofence;

detect an individual approaching the boundary and notify the central server of an identity of the individual; and

in response to receiving from the central server an indication that the individual is not authorized to be within the inclusion geofence, perform a security action comprising at least notifying the individual about the boundary.

2 . The centralized security system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote security systems comprises at least a mobile robot.

3 . The centralized security system of claim 2 , wherein the mobile robot is configured to autonomously patrol a route through the building at a time when the individual is detected.

4 . The centralized security system of claim 3 , wherein the route through the building is selected from one or more historic routes taken by one or more mobile robots.

5 . The centralized security system of claim 3 , wherein the security operation further comprises modifying the route that the mobile robot is patrolling.

6 . The centralized security system of claim 2 , wherein the security operation further comprises modifying a speed of the mobile robot and approaching the individual.

7 . The centralized security system of claim 2 , wherein the security operation further comprises following the individual.

8 . The centralized security system of claim 1 , wherein the security operation further comprises one or more of notifying security personnel of the individual, contacting local authorities, requesting credentials from the individual, and obstructing a movement of the individual.

9 . The centralized security system of claim 1 , wherein the security operation further comprises projecting a laser in a line on a surface of the building to notify the individual of the boundary, the line corresponding to at least a portion of the boundary.

10 . The centralized security system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more remote security systems comprises one or more of: a camera system, a door locking system, a security gate system, a security kiosk system, a scanner system, and a sensor system configured to detect the individual.

11 . A method, comprising:

receiving, by one or more remote security systems from a central server, a definition of an inclusion geofence corresponding to a portion of the building, the definition including a boundary of the inclusion geofence;

detecting, by the one or more remote security systems, an individual approaching the boundary;

notifying, by the one or more remote security systems, the central server of an identity of the individual; and

in response to receiving from the central server an indication that the individual is not authorized to be within the inclusion geofence, performing a security action comprising at least notifying the individual about the boundary.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more remote security systems comprises at least a mobile robot.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the mobile robot is configured to autonomously patrol a route through the building at a time when the individual is detected.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the route through the building is selected from one or more historic routes taken by one or more mobile robots.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the security operation further comprises modifying the route that the mobile robot is patrolling.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the security operation further comprises modifying a speed of the mobile robot and approaching the individual.

17 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the security operation further comprises following the individual.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the security operation further comprises one or more of notifying security personnel of the individual, contacting local authorities, requesting credentials from the individual, and obstructing a movement of the individual.

19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the security operation further comprises projecting a laser in a line on a surface of the building to notify the individual of the boundary, the line corresponding to at least a portion of the boundary.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more remote security systems comprises one or more of: a camera system, a door locking system, a security gate system, a security kiosk system, a scanner system, and a sensor system configured to detect the individual.
