Abstract

Disclosed are apparatuses, systems, and methods for tracking patients that suffer from dementia. The disclosed apparatus is a wearable device capable of micro-tracking through Bluetooth Low Energy technology and capable of macro-tracking through GPS technology. The device may additionally include sensors to monitor other information such as the health of the patient or the patient's surrounding environment. The disclosed systems utilize the disclosed device in an overall system for tracking patients. These systems teach how the device interacts with the other components of the system (e.g., signal beacons, wireless transmitters, a central processing unit, mobile computing devices) to provide an integrated system to tracking the location and monitoring the well being of the patient. Finally, methods for tracking patients that use the disclosed devices and systems are disclosed.

Claims (33)

1. A location tracking system comprising:

a wearable device comprising:

at least one sensor;

at least one processor;

circuitry configured to wirelessly send and receive beacon signals through the use of Bluetooth® Low Energy;

circuitry configured to receive satellite-based location signals from a global positioning system (GPS); and

at least one antenna configured to be placed in wireless signal communication with a Long Range Radio Frequency (LRRF) modem;

a plurality of beacons each of which is configured to be in signal communication with the wearable device and with one another the latter of which through formation of a beacon-to-beacon communication chain; and

a wireless transmitter in signal communication with the wearable device, wherein the at least one sensor, at least one processor, the circuitry configured to wirelessly send and receive beacon signals through the use of Bluetooth® Low Energy, the circuitry configured to receive satellite-based location signals from GPS and at least one antenna of the wearable device are cooperative with one another such that data that has been acquired by at least one of the at least one sensor, the circuitry configured to wirelessly send and receive beacon signals through the use of Bluetooth® Low Energy and the circuitry configured to receive satellite-based location signals from GPS is exchanged between the wearable device and at least one of (i) the plurality of beacons, (ii) the wireless transmitter and (iii) at least one of a central processing unit or a mobile computing device.

2. The location tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transmitter is in signal cooperation with the wearable device through at least one of a Bluetooth® wireless transmission protocol, a Bluetooth® Low Energy wireless transmission protocol, radio-frequency identification (RFID), LRRF, a near-field communications (NFC) wireless transmission protocol, a Zigbee wireless transmission protocol, a Z-Wave wireless transmission protocol, a Wi-Gig wireless transmission protocol, a Global System for Media Communications (GSM) wireless transmission protocol, a code divisional multiple access (CDMA) wireless transmission protocol, a general packet radio service (GPRS) wireless transmission protocol, a 3G wireless transmission protocol, a 4G wireless transmission protocol, a Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) wireless transmission protocol, a long term evolution (LTE) wireless transmission protocol, a wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) wireless transmission protocol, a low power Wi-Fi wireless transmission protocol, a Wireless USB transmission protocol, a GPS, RF, an indoor positioning system (IPS) wireless transmission protocol, infrared and satellite communication.

3. The location tracking system of claim 1 , further comprising a user interface that is configured to operate on a mobile computing device that is in either direct or indirect signal communication with the wearable device.

4. The location tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the location of an object that is associated with the wearable device is determined in relation to a predefined geographical location.

5. The location tracking system of claim 4 , wherein the predefined geographical location comprises a previously authorized predetermined area.

6. The location tracking system of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of beacons are programmed so that predetermined area is set as a fixed distance from at least one of the plurality of beacons.

7. The location tracking system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of beacons are fixed in location.

8. The location tracking system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of beacons are not fixed in location.

9. The location tracking system of claim 1 , further comprising a Universal Unique Identifier (UUID) that is associated with the wearable device and that upon activation registers the wearable device to an account of an individual that is associated with the wearable device.

10. The location tracking system of claim 9 , wherein the wearable device is configured to be activated by being paired with a mobile telephone.

11. The location tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable device is configured to switch between LRRF and Bluetooth® Low Energy modes of transmission of the acquired data based on whether the wearable device is or is not within signal range of the at least one of the plurality of beacons such that Bluetooth® Low Energy is used when the wearable device is within signal range of the at least one of the plurality of beacons and LRRF is used when the wearable device is not within signal range of the at least one of the plurality of beacons.

12. The location tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the acquired data comprises at least one of location data, environment data and well-being data.

13. The location tracking system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one notifier configured to generate an alert in response to the data that has been acquired by at least one of the at least one sensor, a Bluetooth® Low Energy wireless signal or a GPS wireless signal.

14. The location tracking system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one notifier comprises at least one of a vibration motor, a light-emitting diode and an audible speaker.

15. A method for tracking an object using a wearable device, the method comprising:

configuring the wearable device to be affixed to the object, the wearable device configured to perform both micro-location tracking through a Bluetooth® Low Energy wireless transmission protocol and macro-location tracking through GPS;

arranging a plurality of beacons such that at least one of them is in signal communication with the wearable device and with at least one other of the plurality of beacons the latter of which is through formation of a beacon-to-beacon communication chain; and

upon having the wearable device receive at least one location signal from at least one of the plurality of beacons, determining a location of the object.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the determining is performed on the wearable device.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the determining is performed in a central processing unit that is in signal communication with at least one of a wireless transmitter and the wearable device.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising linking data that has been acquired by the wearable device to a user account by:

pairing the wearable device with a mobile telephone; and

activating a Universal Unique Identifier (UUID) that is associated with the wearable device.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the object is at least one of a person or a pet.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the object is a personal item selected from the group consisting of laptop computers, mobile phones and combinations thereof.
