Abstract

A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) device scans through a scanning zone while emitting light pulses and receives reflected signals corresponding to the light pulses. The LIDAR device scans the emitted light pulses through the scanning zone by reflecting the light pulses from an array of oscillating mirrors. The mirrors are operated by a set of electromagnets arranged to apply torque on the mirrors, and an orientation feedback system senses the orientations of the mirrors. Driving parameters for each mirror are determined based on information from the orientation feedback system. The driving parameters can be used to drive the mirrors in phase at an operating frequency despite variations in moments of inertia and resonant frequencies among the mirrors.

Claims (37)

1. A light detection and ranging (lidar) device comprising:

a plurality of light sources configured to emit light signals, wherein the light signals are directed toward a scanning zone of the lidar device;

an electromagnetic driving system configured to modify the scanning zone;

a plurality of light sensors configured to detect reflected light signals;

one or more beam-steering optics configured to direct the emitted light signals or the reflected light signals; and

a controller configured to control the electromagnetic driving system using one or more control signals.

2. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics corresponds to a respective light source of the plurality of light sources.

3. The lidar device according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics comprises a rotating mirror.

4. The lidar device according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics is oriented such that each of the plurality of light sources scans a substantially distinct region of the scanning zone.

5. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the light sources of the plurality of light sources corresponds to multiple beam-steering optics of the one or more beam-steering optics.

6. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more beam-steering optics corresponds to multiple light sources of the plurality of light sources.

7. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics is configured to direct reflected light signals to at least one of the plurality of light sensors.

8. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics comprises a lens.

9. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics is operable to scan the light signals from the plurality of light sources across the scanning zone at a regular interval.

10. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics comprises a frame.

11. The lidar device according to claim 10 , wherein the electromagnetic driving system is mounted to an underside of the frame.

12. The lidar device according to claim 10 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics comprises a first side rail and a second side rail, and wherein the first side rail and the second side rail are each connected to the frame by a connecting arm.

13. The lidar device according to claim 12 , wherein the connecting arms are connected to the frame along a line that defines an axis of rotation relative to the frame.

14. The lidar device according to claim 12 , wherein the connecting arms are connected to the first side rail and the second side rail using adhesives, fasteners, welding, or soldering.

15. The lidar device according to claim 12 , wherein the connecting arms are oriented in a common plane.

16. The lidar device according to claim 1 , further comprising an orientation feedback system configured to:

sense an orientation of at least one of the one or more beam-steering optics; and

provide information indicative of the orientation to the controller.

17. The lidar device according to claim 16 , wherein the controller is configured to analyze information from the orientation feedback system to identify phase differences and/or amplitude differences of different beam-steering optics within the one or more beam-steering optics.

18. The lidar device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more beam-steering optics is configured to direct the emitted light signals and the reflected light signals.

19. A method comprising:

controlling, by a controller of a light detection and ranging (lidar) device, an electromagnetic driving system of the lidar device using one or more control signals;

modifying, by the electromagnetic driving system, a scanning zone for light signals emitted by a plurality of light sources of the lidar device;

emitting, by at least one of the plurality of light sources, one or more light signals;

directing, by one or more beam-steering optics, the emitted light signals or reflected light signals; and

detecting, by at least one of a plurality of light sensors of the lidar device, the reflected light signals.

20. A vehicle comprising a light detection and ranging (lidar) device, wherein the lidar device comprises:

a plurality of light sources configured to emit light signals, wherein the light signals are directed toward a scanning zone of the lidar device;

an electromagnetic driving system configured to modify the scanning zone;

a plurality of light sensors configured to detect reflected light signals;

one or more beam-steering optics configured to direct the emitted light signals or the reflected light signals; and

a controller configured to control the electromagnetic driving system using one or more control signals.
