Abstract

A method of managing virtual storage systems, the method comprising creating a virtual storage system, the virtual storage system including a virtual drive layer that includes a plurality of virtual drives and virtual drive logic configured to manage processing of I/O operations in the virtual storage system; and a backend storage layer including one or more storage devices that include at least one storage device for which one or more performance specifications are defined by a cloud storage service provider; and adjusting at least one component of the virtual storage system.

Claims (54)

1 . A method comprising:

creating a virtual storage system comprising a virtual drive layer having a plurality of virtual drives and a backend storage layer having one or more storage devices, wherein at least one of the one or more storage devices includes one or more performance specifications defined by a cloud storage service provider; and

based on the one or more performance specifications, adjusting at least one component of the virtual storage system.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the one or more storage devices, one or more input/output (I/O) operations directed to the one or more storage devices; and

processing the one or more I/O operations using virtual drive components that bypass one or more performance specifications defined by a cloud storage service provider.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one component further comprises:

adjusting the at least one component by virtual drive logic while avoiding a storage system controller that communicates with one or more host computing devices for processing I/O operations, wherein the virtual drive logic is external to the storage system controller.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one component further comprises:

receiving storage configuration requirements associated with the virtual storage system; and

adjusting the at least one component based on the storage configuration requirements.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a request to change a storage configuration of the virtual storage system; and

based on the request, adjusting one or more components of the virtual drive layer while bypassing adjusting the backend storage layer.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one component further comprises:

adjusting a storage type of the one or more storage devices.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one component further comprises:

adjusting a count of the one or more storage devices.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one component further comprises:

adjusting a count of the plurality of virtual drives.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual drive layer includes local instance storage, further comprising:

caching at least a portion of data associated with input/output (I/O) operations at the local instance storage of the virtual drive layer.

10 . A storage system comprising:

a plurality of storage devices; and

a storage system controller, operatively coupled to the one or more storage devices, configured to:

create a virtual storage system comprising a virtual drive layer having a plurality of virtual drives and a backend storage layer having one or more storage devices of the plurality of storage devices, wherein at least one of the one or more storage devices includes one or more performance specifications defined by a cloud storage service provider; and

based on the one or more performance specifications, adjust at least one component of the virtual storage system.

11 . The storage system of claim 10 , wherein the storage system controller is further configured to:

receive, from the one or more storage devices, one or more input/output (I/O) operations directed to the one or more storage devices; and

process the one or more I/O operations using virtual drive components that bypass one or more performance specifications defined by a cloud storage service provider.

12 . The storage system of claim 10 , wherein the storage system controller is further configured to:

adjust the at least one component by virtual drive logic while avoiding a storage system controller that communicates with one or more host computing devices for processing I/O operations, wherein the virtual drive logic is external to the storage system controller.

13 . The storage system of claim 10 , wherein the storage system controller is further configured to:

receive storage configuration requirements associated with the virtual storage system; and

adjust the at least one component based on the storage configuration requirements.

14 . The storage system of claim 10 , wherein the storage system controller is further configured to:

receive a request to change a storage configuration of the virtual storage system; and

based on the request, adjust one or more components of the virtual drive layer while bypassing adjusting the backend storage layer.

15 . The storage system of claim 10 , wherein the storage system controller is further configured to:

adjust a storage type of the one or more storage devices.

16 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a processing device to:

create a virtual storage system comprising a virtual drive layer having a plurality of virtual drives and a backend storage layer having one or more storage devices, wherein at least one of the one or more storage devices includes one or more performance specifications defined by a cloud storage service provider and

based on the one or more performance specifications, adjust at least one component of the virtual storage system.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

receive, from the one or more storage devices, one or more input/output (I/O) operations directed to the one or more storage devices; and

process the one or more I/O operations using virtual drive components that bypass one or more performance specifications defined by a cloud storage service provider.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

adjust the at least one component by a virtual drive logic instead of a storage system controller that communicates with one or more host computing devices for processing I/O operations, wherein the virtual drive logic is external to the storage system controller.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

receive storage configuration requirements associated with the virtual storage system; and

adjust the at least one component based on the storage configuration requirements.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

receive a request to change a storage configuration of the virtual storage system; and

based on the request, adjust one or more components of the virtual drive layer while bypassing adjusting the backend storage layer.
