Abstract

A method for heart valve treatment includes providing a first heart valve treatment member movable along a first shaft portion, providing a second heart valve treatment member movable along a second shaft portion. The first and second heart valve treatment members are movable along the first and second shaft portions, respectively. The first heart valve treatment member is positioned on one side of a heart valve leaflet and the second heart valve treatment member is positioned on an opposite side of the heart valve leaflet. A portion of the heart valve leaflet is fracture by movement of the first heart valve treatment member with respect to the second heart valve treatment member.

Claims (29)

1 . A method for heart valve treatment comprising:

providing a first heart valve treatment member movable along a first shaft portion;

providing a second heart valve treatment member movable along a second shaft portion, wherein said first and second heart valve treatment members are movable along said first and second shaft portions, respectively;

causing said first heart valve treatment member to be positioned on one side of a heart valve leaflet and causing said second heart valve treatment member to be positioned on an opposite side of the heart valve leaflet; and

cutting through a portion of the heart valve leaflet by movement of said first heart valve treatment member with respect to said second heart valve treatment member, wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises dividing the heart valve leaflet into two portions that both remain connected to neighboring heart tissue, and wherein said second heart valve treatment member provides a counter force to a cutting force applied by said first heart valve treatment member on said heart valve leaflet.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet is part of a trans-catheter valve implantation procedure.

3 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises cutting along a centerline of the heart valve leaflet.

4 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising advancing a catheter external shaft to the heart valve leaflet; and

exposing the first heart valve treatment member and the second heart valve treatment member from the catheter external shaft.

5 . The method according to claim 4 , wherein exposing from the catheter external shaft comprises withdrawing the catheter external shaft to expose the first heart valve treatment member and the second heart valve treatment member.

6 . The method according to claim 4 , further comprising advancing a guidewire to the heart valve leaflet,

wherein advancing the catheter external shaft comprises advancing the catheter external shaft along the guidewire.

7 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises cutting through the portion of leaflet material at an aortic valve in a heart.

8 . A method for preparing for a trans-catheter valve implantation, the method comprising:

advancing a catheter external shaft to a position near a heart valve site;

exposing a first heart valve treatment member and a second heart valve treatment member from out of the catheter external shaft;

causing the first heart valve treatment member to be positioned on one side of a heart valve leaflet and causing the second heart valve treatment member to be positioned on an opposite side of the heart valve leaflet; and

cutting through a portion of the heart valve leaflet by movement of the first heart valve treatment member with respect to the second heart valve treatment member, wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises dividing the heart valve leaflet into two portions that both remain connected to neighboring heart tissue, wherein said second heart valve treatment member provides a counter force to a cutting force applied by said first heart valve treatment member on said heart valve leaflet, thereby preparing for the trans-catheter valve implantation.

9 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises cutting along a centerline of the heart valve leaflet.

10 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein exposing from the catheter external shaft comprises withdrawing the catheter external shaft to expose the first heart valve treatment member and the second heart valve treatment member.

11 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising advancing a guidewire to the heart valve site,

wherein advancing the catheter external shaft comprises advancing the catheter external shaft along the guidewire.

12 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises cutting through the portion of leaflet material at an aortic valve in a heart.

13 . The method according to claim 12 , wherein cutting through the portion of the leaflet material comprises cutting along a centerline of the leaflet material at the aortic valve from an aortic wall through an end of the leaflet.

The method according to claim 8 , wherein advancing the catheter external shaft to the position near the heart valve site comprising advancing the catheter shaft through a peripheral artery, using a retrograde approach, through an aortic arch, into an ascending aorta, and to an aortic valve site.

The method according to claim 8 , further comprising, after exposing the first heart valve treatment member and the second heart valve treatment member from out of the catheter external shaft, expanding the first heart valve treatment member and expanding the second heart valve treatment member.

16 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein advancing the catheter external shaft to the position near the heart valve site comprises advancing the catheter external shaft to the position near a calcified heart valve.

17 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet by movement of the first heart valve treatment member comprises cutting through portions of multiple heart valve leaflets.

18 . The method according to claim 17 , wherein cutting through the portion of the heart valve leaflet comprises making a longitudinal cut from an aortic wall at a centerline of each leaflet of the multiple heart valve leaflets.
