Abstract

Handguard anchoring systems suitable for attaching a handguard to a firearm are disclosed, including systems having a fastener that extends into a barrel nut and compresses at least a portion of the handguard between the fastener and the barrel nut. Many embodiments include openings in the handguard and/or a plate that are oversized for the fastener such that the handguard may be rotated relative to the barrel nut when a portion of the fastener is positioned within the opening.

Claims (43)

1. An assembly comprising:

a firearm having a barrel and a barrel nut;

a handguard having a sidewall defining an internal cavity arranged to receive the barrel and the barrel nut, the sidewall defining a first side opening that exposes at least a portion of the barrel nut when the barrel nut and the handguard are mounted on the firearm, wherein a length of the first side opening is greater than a width of the first side opening;

a first plate positioned over the first side opening, wherein the first plate defines a first plate opening arranged to receive a first fastener and a second plate opening arranged to receive a second fastener;

a second side opening defined through the sidewall, wherein the second side opening exposes at least a portion of the barrel nut when the barrel nut and the handguard are mounted on the firearm, and wherein a length of the second side opening is greater than a width of the second side opening;

a second plate positioned over the second side opening, wherein the second plate defines a third plate opening arranged to receive a third fastener;

wherein the first fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the first fastener first end engages another portion of the assembly positioned in the internal cavity between the barrel and the handguard to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm;

wherein the first plate opening is countersunk or counterbored to receive the first fastener second end;

wherein the first fastener second end does not protrude beyond the first plate when the system is mounted on the firearm; and

wherein the third fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the third fastener first end engages another portion of the assembly positioned in the internal cavity between the barrel and the handguard to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first plate has a first portion and a second portion, the first portion smaller than and receivable within the first side opening and the second portion larger than the first side opening and positionable on an exterior surface of the handguard.

3. The system of claim 2 ,

wherein the first portion of the plate has a length and a width; and

wherein the first portion is sufficiently smaller than the side opening of the handguard so as to allow movement of the first portion of the plate from a first section of the side opening into a second section of the side opening when positioned therein.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the second fastener first end engages another portion of the assembly positioned in the internal cavity between the barrel and the handguard to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the second plate opening is countersunk or counterbored to receive the second fastener second end; and

wherein the second fastener second end does not protrude beyond the first plate when the system is mounted on the firearm.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the third plate opening is countersunk or counterbored to receive the third fastener second end; and

wherein the third fastener second end does not protrude beyond the second plate when the system is mounted on the firearm.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second plate has a first portion and a second portion, the first portion smaller than and receivable within the second side opening and the second portion larger than the second side opening and positionable on an exterior surface of the handguard.

8. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the second plate defines a fourth plate opening arranged to receive a fourth fastener; and

wherein the fourth fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the fourth fastener first end engages another portion of the assembly positioned in the internal cavity between the barrel and the handguard to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the barrel nut includes a circumference with a plurality of openings positioned therearound.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first fastener engages a first opening of the plurality of openings positioned around the circumference of the barrel nut to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first plate has a first portion and a second portion, the first portion smaller than and receivable within the first side opening and the second portion larger than the first side opening and positionable on an exterior surface of the handguard.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first plate defines a second plate opening arranged to receive a second fastener.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the second fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the second fastener engages a second opening of the plurality of openings positioned around the circumference of the barrel nut to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second plate opening is countersunk or counterbored to receive the second fastener second end; and

wherein the second fastener second end does not protrude beyond the first plate when the system is mounted on the firearm.

15. The system of claim 14 , further comprising:

a second side opening defined through the sidewall, wherein the second side opening exposes at least a portion of the barrel nut when the barrel nut and the handguard are mounted on the firearm, and wherein a length of the second side opening is greater than a width of the second side opening;

a second plate positioned over the second side opening, wherein the second plate defines a third plate opening arranged to receive a third fastener; and

wherein the third fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the third fastener engages a third opening of the plurality of openings positioned around the circumference of the barrel nut to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

16. The system of claim 15 ,

wherein the third plate opening is countersunk or counterbored to receive the third fastener second end; and

wherein the third fastener second end does not protrude beyond the second plate when the system is mounted on the firearm.

17. The system of claim 16 ,

wherein the second plate defines a fourth plate opening arranged to receive a fourth fastener; and

wherein the fourth fastener has a first end and a second end, and wherein the fourth fastener engages a fourth opening of the plurality of openings positioned around the circumference of the barrel nut to force the sidewall of the handguard towards the barrel nut of the firearm to secure the handguard to the firearm.

18. The system of claim 17 ,

wherein the fourth plate opening is countersunk or counterbored to receive the fourth fastener second end; and

wherein the fourth fastener second end does not protrude beyond the second plate when the system is mounted on the firearm.
