Claims (23)

- 119 . (canceled)

. A feed additive comprising viable freeze-dried Megasphaera elsdenii cells, wherein the freeze-dried Megasphaera elsdenii cells remain viable after storage at a temperature of about 25° C. for at least 2 weeks, and wherein the feed additive comprises about 1×10 7 to about 1×10 12 CFU/g of viable cells.

. The feed additive of claim 120 , wherein the freeze-dried Megasphaera elsdenii cells remain viable after storage at about 4° C. for at least 1 month.

. The feed additive of claim 120 , wherein the feed additive further comprises one or more of another microorganism, growth substrates, enzymes, sugars, carbohydrates, extracts, and growth promoting micro-ingredients, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 120 , wherein the feed additive is selected from the group consisting of: a powder, a granulate, a particulate, a pellet, a cake, a water soluble concentrate, a paste, a bolus, a tablet, a dust, a liquid, a component thereof, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 120 , wherein the feed additive is a probiotic.

. A feed additive comprising viable encapsulated freeze-dried Megasphaera elsdenii cells, wherein the encapsulated freeze-dried Megasphaera elsdenii cells remain viable after storage at a temperature of about 25° C. for at least 2 weeks, and wherein the feed additive comprises about 1×10 7 to about 1×10 12 CFU/g of viable cells.

. The feed additive of claim 125 , wherein the encapsulated freeze-dried Megasphaera elsdenii cells remain viable after storage at about 4° C. for at least 1 month.

. The feed additive of claim 125 , wherein the feed additive further comprises one or more of another microorganism, growth substrates, enzymes, sugars, carbohydrates, extracts, and growth promoting micro-ingredients, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 125 , wherein the feed additive is selected from the group consisting of: a powder, a granulate, a particulate, a pellet, a cake, a water soluble concentrate, a paste, a bolus, a tablet, a dust, a liquid, a component thereof, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 125 , wherein the feed additive is a probiotic.

. A feed additive comprising viable freeze-dried anaerobic bacterial cells, wherein the freeze-dried anaerobic bacterial cells remain viable after storage at a temperature of about 25° C. for at least 2 weeks, and wherein the feed additive comprises about 1×10 7 to about 1×10 12 CFU/g of viable cells.

. The feed additive of claim 130 , wherein the freeze-dried anaerobic bacterial cells remain viable after storage at about 4° C. for at least 1 month.

. The feed additive of claim 130 , wherein the anaerobic bacterial cells are selected from the group consisting of: Megasphaera elsdenii, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, Pediococcus acidilactici , and Lactobacillus casei.

. The feed additive of claim 130 , wherein the feed additive further comprises one of more of another microorganism, growth substrates, enzymes, sugars, carbohydrates, extracts, and growth promoting micro-ingredients, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 130 , wherein the feed additive is selected from the group consisting of: a powder, a granulate, a particulate, a pellet, a cake, a water soluble concentrate, a paste, a bolus, a tablet, a dust, a liquid, a component thereof, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 130 , wherein the feed additive is a probiotic.

. A feed additive comprising viable encapsulated freeze-dried anaerobic bacterial cells, wherein the encapsulated freeze-dried anaerobic bacterial cells remain viable after storage at a temperature of about 25° C. for at least 2 weeks, and wherein the feed additive comprises about 1×10 7 to about 1×10 12 CFU/g of viable cells.

. The feed additive of claim 136 , wherein the encapsulated freeze-dried anaerobic bacterial cells remain viable after storage at about 4° C. for at least 1 month.

. The feed additive of claim 136 , wherein the anaerobic bacterial cells are selected from the group consisting of: Megasphaera elsdenii, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, Pediococcus acidilactici , and Lactobacillus casei.

. The feed additive of claim 136 , wherein the feed additive further comprises one or more of another microorganism, growth substrates, enzymes, sugars, carbohydrates, extracts, and growth promoting micro-ingredients, or combinations thereof.

. The feed additive of claim 136 , wherein the feed additive is selected from the group consisting of: a powder, a granulate, a particulate, a pellet, a cake, a water soluble concentrate, a paste, a bolus, a tablet, a dust, a liquid, a component thereof, or combinations thereof.
