Abstract

Various systems and devices for generating nitric oxide are disclosed herein. According to one embodiment, the device includes a body having an inlet, an outlet, and a porous solid matrix positioned with the body. The porous solid matrix is coated with an aqueous solution of an antioxidant, wherein the inlet is configured to receive a gas flow and fluidly communicate the gas flow to the outlet through the solid matrix to convert nitrogen dioxide in the gas flow into nitric oxide. The porous solid matrix allows the device to be used in any orientation. Additionally, the porous solid matrix provides a rigid structure suitable to withstand vibrations and abuse without compromising device functionality.

Claims (17)

1. A system comprising:

a device comprising

a body having a depth;

a porous solid matrix positioned within the body, the porous solid matrix having a wall thickness and configured to form nitric oxide from a gas source,

wherein the depth is greater than the wall thickness;

wherein when a gas flow passes through the porous solid matrix, a pressure drop across the porous solid matrix is less than 2 inches of water at a gas flow rate of 40-60 liters per minute; and

wherein the device is air-leakage free.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the porous solid matrix comprises an antioxidant converting the gas source to the nitric oxide.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the body comprises an inlet and an outlet, wherein the inlet is configured to receive the gas flow and direct it through the porous solid matrix.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the outlet is configured to transfer the nitric oxide to a patient.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the gas source is nitrogen dioxide or dinitrogen tetroxide.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the porous solid matrix comprises a silica gel incorporated within pores.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a humidifier that is in fluid communication with the device.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the device exhibits humidity below a dew point.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the humidifier is positioned such that the gas flow passes the humidifier before it enters the device.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the humidifier is positioned such that the gas flow passes the humidifier before the formed nitric oxide reaches a patient.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein a humidifier is an integral part of the device.
