Abstract

Methods and systems for facilitating assessment of blood flow in a tissue volume of a subject are disclosed. In some variations, the method may include: after a predetermined amount of a fluorescence agent has been administered to the subject, exciting the fluorescence agent in the tissue volume such that the excited fluorescence agent emits fluorescent light, acquiring fluorescence data based on the fluorescent light emitted during blood flow through the tissue volume, estimating a molar concentration of the fluorescence agent in the blood flowing through the tissue volume, and generating an assessment of blood flow in the tissue volume based at least in part on the fluorescence data and the estimated molar concentration of the fluorescence agent. The estimated molar concentration may be based on the predetermined amount of the fluorescence agent and an estimated circulating blood volume of the subject.

Claims (44)

1 . A method for use in medical imaging for facilitating assessment of tissue perfusion in a tissue volume of a subject, the method comprising:

illuminating the tissue volume with visible light and with fluorescence excitation light, wherein the fluorescence excitation light excites a fluorescence agent in the tissue volume such that the excited fluorescence agent emits fluorescent light;

acquiring image data based at least in part on the fluorescent light emitted during blood flow through the tissue volume;

processing the image data to compensate for ambient light; and

generating an assessment of tissue perfusion in the tissue volume based at least in part on the processed image data.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein processing the image data to compensate for ambient light comprises estimating an ambient room light contribution to the image data.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein estimating an ambient room light contribution comprises subtracting a fluorescence light signal from a second set of sensor pixel rows from a fluorescence light signal from a first set of sensor pixel rows.

4 . The method of claim 3 , comprising, before the subtracting, interpolating the signal from the first set of sensor pixel rows to match pixel positions of the signal from the second set of sensor pixel rows.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein acquiring the image data comprises:

acquiring, by an image sensor, a fluorescent light signal from a first set of sensor pixel rows according to a first exposure timing scheme; and

acquiring, by the image sensor a fluorescent light signal from a second set of sensor pixel rows according to a second exposure timing scheme different from the first exposure timing scheme.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first exposure timing scheme and the second exposure timing scheme acquire for one half frame and one quarter frame periods respectively.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first exposure timing scheme acquires for one half of every third frame.

8 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second exposure timing scheme acquires for one quarter of every third frame.

9 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first exposure timing scheme and the second exposure timing scheme acquire simultaneously with one another.

10 . The method of claim 5 , wherein acquiring the image data comprises acquiring a visible light signal according to a third exposure timing scheme different from the first exposure timing scheme and the second exposure timing scheme.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the third exposure timing scheme acquires for one half of two of every three frames.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein illuminating the tissue volume with visible light and with fluorescence excitation light comprises:

illuminating the tissue volume with the visible light according to a first illumination timing scheme; and

illuminating the tissue volume with the fluorescence excitation light according to a second illumination timing scheme different from the first illumination timing scheme.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first illumination timing scheme and the second illumination timing scheme each illuminate for respective quarter-frame periods.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first illumination timing scheme illuminates for every third quarter-frame period.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the second illumination timing scheme illuminates for one quarter of every third frame.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first illumination timing scheme and the second illumination timing scheme illuminate non-simultaneously with one another.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the assessment of tissue perfusion in the tissue volume is based at least in part on one or more of a cross-sectional area of the tissue volume, a thickness increase of a blood volume layer, a pulse duty cycle of blood flow, and duration of a single pressure pulse in blood flow.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the assessment of tissue perfusion is based at least in part on an intensity of fluorescence image data during a diastolic phase of blood flow and an intensity of the fluorescence image data during a systolic phase of the blood flow.

19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue volume is selected in the fluorescence image data by a user.

20 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescence agent comprises indocyanine green.

21 . A system for use in medical imaging for facilitating assessment of tissue perfusion in a tissue volume of a subject, the system comprising:

one or more light sources configured to generate visible light and fluorescence excitation light;

one or more processors; and

memory having instructions stored thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

illuminate the tissue volume with visible light and with fluorescence excitation light, wherein the fluorescence excitation light excites a fluorescence agent in the tissue volume such that the excited fluorescence agent emits fluorescent light;

acquiring image data based at least in part on the fluorescent light emitted during blood flow through the tissue volume;

processing the image data to compensate for ambient light; and

generating an assessment of tissue perfusion in the tissue volume based at least in part on the processed image data.

22 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions for use in medical imaging for facilitating assessment of tissue perfusion in a tissue volume of a subject, wherein the instructions, when executed by a system comprising one or more light sources and one or more processors, cause the system to:

one or more light sources configured to generate visible light and fluorescence excitation light;

one or more processors; and

memory having instructions stored thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

illuminate the tissue volume with visible light and with fluorescence excitation light, wherein the fluorescence excitation light excites a fluorescence agent in the tissue volume such that the excited fluorescence agent emits fluorescent light;

acquiring image data based at least in part on the fluorescent light emitted during blood flow through the tissue volume;

processing the image data to compensate for ambient light; and

generating an assessment of tissue perfusion in the tissue volume based at least in part on the processed image data.
