Abstract

Drill jigs for positioning mounting holes using metrology processes, and associated systems and methods, disclosed. A representative drill jig system for positioning holes to be made in an object can include a drill jig having a plurality of movable plates. The plates can include: a rotatable plate carrying a hole pattern for positioning the holes to be made; a first translatable plate that is translatable along a first axis; a second translatable plate that is translatable along a second axis that is perpendicular to the first axis; and a base plate carrying one or more attachment elements positioned and configured to grasp the object. In some embodiments, the plates are manually movable via one or more adjusters. In some embodiments, the drill jig includes one or more servos for moving one or more of the plates under computer control, such as in a feedback loop using one or more encoders.

Claims (46)

1 . A method of using a drill jig comprising a hole pattern, one or more attachment elements, and a plurality of movable plates, the method comprising:

attaching the drill jig to or adjacent to an object to be drilled, using the one or more attachment elements

adjusting the drill jig to position the hole pattern within a reference coordinate system, using a metrology system and one or more optical targets carried on the drill jig; and

making holes based on the hole pattern or marking locations for holes based on the hole pattern; wherein

adjusting the drill jig comprises moving one or more of the plurality of movable plates.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of movable plates comprise:

a rotatable plate comprising the hole pattern;

a first translatable plate;

a second translatable plate; and

a base plate comprising the one or more attachment elements, wherein the one or more attachment elements are positioned and configured to grasp the object; wherein:

the second translatable plate is supported on the base plate and translatable relative to the base plate along a first axis;

the first translatable plate is supported on the second translatable plate and translatable relative to the second translatable plate along a second axis that is transverse to the first axis; and

the rotatable plate is supported on the first translatable plate and rotatable relative to the first translatable plate about a third axis that is orthogonal to the first axis and the second axis;

and wherein adjusting the drill jig comprises moving one or more of the plurality of movable plates relative to one or more of the other movable plates.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein moving the one or more movable plates of the plurality of movable plates comprises moving the one or more movable plates manually operating one or more adjusters connected to the one or more movable plates.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein moving the one or more movable plates of the plurality of movable plates comprises using a servo motor connected to the one or more movable plates.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein using a servo motor comprise controlling the servo motor with a computer system performing closed-loop control based on feedback from one or more encoders positioned to observe or measure movement of the one or more movable plates.

6 . A drill jig system for aligning a hole pattern for holes to be made in an object, the drill jig system comprising drill jig having a plurality of movable plates, wherein the plurality of movable plates comprise:

a rotatable plate comprising the hole pattern;

a first translatable plate that is translatable along a first axis;

a second translatable plate that is translatable along a second axis that is perpendicular to the first axis; and

a base plate comprising one or more attachment elements positioned and configured to grasp the object.

7 . The drill jig system of claim 6 , further comprising one or more optical targets or one or more receptacles for receiving or supporting one or more optical targets.

8 . The drill jig system of claim 6 , wherein a top surface of the base plate includes or carries one or more rail elements, and wherein a bottom surface of the second translatable plate includes or carries one or more rail cars positioned and configured to engage the one or more rail elements.

The drill jig system of claim 6 , wherein a top surface of the second translatable plate includes or carries one or more rail elements, and wherein a bottom surface of the first translatable plate includes or carries one or more rail cars positioned and configured to engage the one or more rail elements.

10 . The drill jig system of claim 6 , further comprising one or more adjusters configured and positioned to cause relative movement between two of the movable plates.

11 . The drill jig system of claim 6 , further comprising one or more servo motors connected to two of the movable plates and positioned to move the movable plates.

12 . The drill jig system of claim 11 , further comprising a microcontroller connected to the one or more servo motors and positioned to receive commands or report feedback to a computer system to control the one or more servo motors.

13 . The drill jig system of claim 12 , further comprising a battery pack for powering the one or more servo motors and/or the microcontroller.

14 . The drill jig system of claim 12 , further comprising one or more encoders positioned to observe and/or measure movement of the two of the movable plates, wherein the one or more encoders are connected to the microcontroller.

15 . A drill jig system for aligning a template for holes to be made in a surface supported by a supporting element, the drill jig system comprising a drill jig with a plurality of movable plates, the movable plates comprising:

a rotatable plate comprising a hole pattern configured to position the holes to be made;

a first translatable plate;

a second translatable plate; and

a base plate comprising one or more attachment elements positioned and configured to grasp the supporting element; wherein:

the second translatable plate is supported on the base plate and translatable relative to the base plate along a first axis;

the first translatable plate is supported on the second translatable plate and translatable relative to the second translatable plate along a second axis that is transverse to the first axis; and

the rotatable plate is supported on the first translatable plate and rotatable relative to the first translatable plate about a third axis that is orthogonal to the first axis and the second axis.

16 . The drill jig system of claim 15 , wherein a top surface of the base plate includes or carries one or more rail elements, and wherein a bottom surface of the second translatable plate includes or carries one or more rail cars positioned and configured to engage the one or more rail elements.

The drill jig system of claim 15 , wherein a top surface of the second translatable plate includes or carries one or more rail elements, and wherein a bottom surface of the first translatable plate includes or carries one or more rail cars positioned and configured to engage the one or more rail elements.

18 . The drill jig system of claim 15 , further comprising one or more adjusters configured and positioned to cause relative movement between two of the movable plates.

19 . The drill jig system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more attachment elements comprise one or more swivel clamps.

20 . The drill jig system of claim 15 , further comprising:

one or more servo motors connected to two of the movable plates and positioned to move the movable plates;

a microcontroller connected to the one or more servo motors and positioned to receive commands or report feedback to a computer system to control the one or more servo motors; and

one or more encoders positioned to observe and/or measure movement of the two of the movable plates, wherein the one or more encoders are connected to the microcontroller.
