Abstract

A method to generate a photo realistic dentition image includes receiving a 2D image of a patient dentition including a plurality of patient teeth. The method includes obtaining a template dentition including a plurality of template teeth that correspond with a subset of the patient teeth. The method includes generating a tooth location input to position the plurality of template teeth relative to the subset of the plurality of patient teeth. The method includes identifying an area of generation in the 2D image including a plurality of pixels and contextual information. The method includes generating new photo realistic teeth based on the tooth location input, the contextual information, and the area of generation. The method includes disposing the photo realistic teeth in the 2D image.

Claims (71)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, a 2D image of a patient dentition, the patient dentition comprising a plurality of patient teeth;

obtaining, by the one or more processors, a template dentition, the template dentition comprising a plurality of template teeth that correspond with a subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

generating, by the one or more processors and based on the 2D image and template dentition, a tooth location input that identifies a location of the plurality of template teeth relative to the subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

identifying, by the one or more processors, an area of generation in the 2D image, the area of generation comprising a plurality of pixels and contextual information associated with at least the subset of the plurality of patient teeth, the plurality of pixels defining at least the subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

generating, by the one or more processors, new photo realistic teeth based on the tooth location input, the contextual information, and the area of generation; and

disposing, by the one or more processors, the photo realistic teeth in the area of generation of the 2D image to replace the subset of the plurality of patient teeth.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the one or more processors, edges of the plurality of patient teeth, the edges of the plurality of patient teeth comprising first edges and second edges, the first edges associated with the subset of the plurality of patient teeth, the second edges associated with remaining patient teeth of the patient dentition;

aligning, by the one or more processors, edges of the plurality of template teeth with the first edges;

generating, by the one or more processors, a segmentation comprising the aligned edges of the plurality of template teeth and the second edges associated with the remaining patient teeth of the patient dentition; and

generating, by the one or more processors, the photo realistic teeth based on the segmentation.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

projecting, by the one or more processors, the edges of the plurality of template teeth onto the 2D image; and

applying, by the one or more processors, a bundle adjustment to align the edges of the plurality of template teeth with the first edges associated with the subset of the plurality of patient teeth.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of a shape, color, or surface texture of the photo realistic teeth is based on the contextual information of the area of generation.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of template teeth of the 3D mesh are library teeth disposed in a target position.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the subset of the plurality of patient teeth comprise target teeth of the plurality of patient teeth of the patient dentition, wherein the target teeth are targeted for repositioning.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

obtaining, by the one or more processors, data from the area of generation, the data comprising the contextual information and data associated with the tooth location input;

generating, by the one or more processors, new pixels for the area of generation, the new pixels to replace the plurality of pixels of the area of generation, the new pixels to define the photo realistic teeth; and

disposing, by the one or more processors, the new pixels in the area of generation in the 2D image.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the one or more processors, a boundary between the plurality of patient teeth in the 2D image and other features of the patient dentition, the other features comprising at least one of a lip, gingiva, or a tongue of a patient in the 2D image; and

defining, by the one or more processors, the area of generation based on the identified boundary, wherein the photo realistic teeth replace only information in the area of generation.

9 . A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory coupled with the one or more processors, wherein the memory is configured to store instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

receive a 2D image of a patient dentition, the patient dentition comprising a plurality of patient teeth;

obtain a template dentition, the template dentition comprising a plurality of template teeth that correspond with a subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

generate, based on the 2D image and the template dentition, a tooth location input that identifies a location of the plurality of template teeth relative to the subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

identify an area of generation in the 2D image, the area of generation comprising a plurality of pixels and contextual information associated with at least the subset of the plurality of patient teeth, the plurality of pixels defining at least the subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

generate new photo realistic teeth based on the tooth location input, the contextual information and the area of generation; and

dispose the photo realistic teeth in the area of generation of the 2D image to replace the subset of the plurality of patient teeth.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:

identify edges of the plurality of patient teeth, the edges of the plurality of patient teeth comprising first edges and second edges, the first edges associated with the subset of the plurality of patient teeth, the second edges associated with remaining patient teeth of the patient dentition;

align edges of the plurality of template teeth with the first edges;

generate a segmentation comprising the aligned edges of the plurality of template teeth and the second edges associated with the remaining patient teeth of the patient dentition; and

generate the photo realistic teeth based on the segmentation.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:

project the edges of the plurality of template teeth onto the 2D image; and

apply a bundle adjustment to align the edges of the plurality of template teeth with the first edges associated with the subset of the plurality of patient teeth.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein at least one of a shape, color, or surface texture of the photo realistic teeth is based on the contextual information of the area of generation.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of template teeth of the 3D mesh are library teeth disposed in a target position.

14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the subset of the plurality of patient teeth comprise target teeth of the plurality of patient teeth of the patient dentition, wherein the target teeth are targeted for repositioning.

15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:

obtain data from the area of generation, the data comprising the contextual information and data associated with the tooth location input;

generate new pixels for the area of generation, the new pixels to replace the plurality of pixels of the area of generation, the new pixels to define the photo realistic teeth; and

dispose the new pixels in the area of generation in the 2D image.

16 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:

identify a boundary between the plurality of patient teeth in the 2D image and other features of the patient dentition, the other features comprising at least one of a lip, gingiva, or a tongue of a patient in the 2D image; and

define the area of generation based on the identified boundary, wherein the photo realistic teeth replace only information in the area of generation.

17 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

receive a 2D image of a patient dentition, the patient dentition comprising a plurality of patient teeth;

obtain a template dentition, the template dentition comprising a plurality of template teeth that correspond with a subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

generate, based on the 2D image and the template dentition, a tooth location input that identifies a location of the plurality of template teeth relative to the subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

identify an area of generation in the 2D image, the area of generation comprising a plurality of pixels and contextual information associated with at least the subset of the plurality of patient teeth, the plurality of pixels defining at least the subset of the plurality of patient teeth;

generate new photo realistic teeth based on the tooth location input, the contextual information, and the area of generation; and

dispose the photo realistic teeth in the area of generation of the 2D image to replace the subset of the plurality of patient teeth.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

identify edges of the plurality of patient teeth, the edges of the plurality of patient teeth comprising first edges and second edges, the first edges associated with the subset of the plurality of patient teeth, the second edges associated with remaining patient teeth of the patient dentition;

align edges of the plurality of template teeth with the first edges;

generate a segmentation comprising the aligned edges of the plurality of template teeth and the second edges associated with the remaining patient teeth of the patient dentition; and

generate the photo realistic teeth based on the segmentation.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

project the edges of the plurality of template teeth onto the 2D image; and

apply a bundle adjustment to align the edges of the plurality of template teeth with the first edges associated with the subset of the plurality of patient teeth.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

obtain data from the area of generation, the data comprising the contextual information and data associated with the tooth location input;

generate new pixels for the area of generation, the new pixels to replace the plurality of pixels of the area of generation, the new pixels to define the photo realistic teeth; and

dispose the new pixels in the area of generation in the 2D image.
