VIDEO DECODER GUIDED REGION AWARE FILM GRAIN SYNTHESIS
In some embodiments, a method segments a frame of a video into a plurality of regions and classifies a region in the plurality of regions with a region type in a plurality of region types. Film grain synthesis information is generated for the region in the plurality of regions based on the region type that is associated with the region. The method outputs the film grain synthesis information for adding film grain to the region of the frame.
1 . A method comprising:
segmenting, by a computing device, a frame of a video into a plurality of regions;
classifying, by the computing device, a region in the plurality of regions with a region type in a plurality of region types;
generating, by the computing device, film grain synthesis information for the region in the plurality of regions based on the region type that is associated with the region; and
outputting, by the computing device, the film grain synthesis information for adding film grain to the region of the frame.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein segmenting the frame comprises:
analyzing content in the frame to determine regions in the plurality of regions.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein segmenting the frame comprises:
analyzing decoding features for the frame to determine the region in the plurality of regions in the frame, wherein the decoding features are based on information related to decoding the frame.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the decoding features are based on the encoded bitstream or information from the decoding process of the frame.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein classifying the region in the frame comprises:
analyzing decoding features for the frame to determine a region type in the plurality of region types, wherein the decoding features are based on information related to decoding the frame.
6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the decoding features are based on an encoded bitstream for the frame or information from the decoding process of the frame.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a region type in the plurality of region types is based on at least one of whether film grain is visible in the region, the region is of interest, and the region is prone to artifacts.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the film grain synthesis information comprises:
selecting film grain parameters for a model based on the region type, wherein the film grain parameters are used to synthesize film grain using the model.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the film grain synthesis information comprises:
synthesizing film grain based on the region type.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the film grain synthesis information comprises:
determining whether the region is labeled with a first region type of film grain is visible;
determining whether the region is labeled with a second region type of prone to artifacts;
when the region is labeled with the first region type and the second region type, performing a first film grain synthesis process;
when the region is labeled with the first region type and not the second region type, performing the first film grain synthesis process when the region is labeled with a third label type of eye interest; and
when the region is labeled with the first region type and not the second region type, performing a second film grain synthesis process when the region is not labeled with the third label type of eye interest, wherein the second film grain synthesis process is different from the first film grain synthesis process.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first film grain synthesis process uses machine learning to generate the film grain synthesis information.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the second film grain synthesis process generates the film grain synthesis information based on rules.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the rules use spatial information or temporal information that is associated with the region to generate the film grain synthesis information.
14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein generating the film grain synthesis information comprises:
when the region is not labeled with the first region type, determining whether the region is labeled with a third region type of eye interest;
when the region is labeled with the third region type and not the first region type, performing a third film grain synthesis process; and
when the region is not labeled with the third region type and not labeled with the first region type, performing a fourth film grain synthesis process, wherein the third film grain synthesis process is different from the fourth film grain synthesis process.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the fourth film grain synthesis process does not generate film grain for the region.
16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the third film grain synthesis process generates the film grain synthesis information based on a neighboring frame to the frame.
17 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon computer executable instructions, which when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to be operable for:
segmenting a frame of a video into a plurality of regions;
classifying a region in the plurality of regions with a region type in a plurality of region types;
generating film grain synthesis information for the region in the plurality of regions based on the region type that is associated with the region; and
outputting the film grain synthesis information for adding film grain to the region of the frame.
18 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein classifying the region in the frame comprises:
analyzing decoding features for the frame to determine a region type in the plurality of region types, wherein the decoding features are based on information related to decoding the frame.
19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein generating the film grain synthesis information comprises:
selecting film grain parameters for a model based on the region type, wherein the film grain parameters are used to synthesize film grain using the model.
20 . An apparatus comprising:
one or more computer processors; and
a computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions for controlling the one or more computer processors to be operable for:
segmenting a frame of a video into a plurality of regions;
classifying a region in the plurality of regions with a region type in a plurality of region types;
generating film grain synthesis information for the region in the plurality of regions based on the region type that is associated with the region; and
outputting the film grain synthesis information for adding film grain to the region of the frame.
