Abstract

The present disclosure relates to methods and devices for controlling arthropods, including insects and arachnids in an environment. The methods generally comprise: generating a near-ideal gas Purified Hydrogen Peroxide Gas (PHPG) that is substantially non-hydrated (e.g., in the form of water in solution or water in solution or water molecules bonded by covalence, van der Waals forces, or London forces) and substantially free of, e.g., ozone, plasma species, and/or organic species; and directing the gas comprising primarily PHPG into the environment such that the PHPG acts to control arachnids in the environment. In certain aspects, the arachnids may be totally or partially killed.

Claims (27)

1. A method for controlling one or more arthropods in an environment comprising:

generating hydrogen peroxide gas from atmospheric water vapor; and

directing the generated hydrogen peroxide gas into the environment in an amount of about 5 parts per million by weight (ppm) or less for a time period sufficient to control the one or more arthropods within the environment, wherein said arthropods do not include molds.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hydrogen peroxide gas comprises purified hydrogen peroxide gas (PHPG).

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said PHPG within the environment comprises 0.015 ppm of ozone or less.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generated hydrogen peroxide gas is maintained within the environment at a level of 1.0 ppm or less.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generated hydrogen peroxide gas is non-hydrated.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said atmospheric water vapor is contained within ambient air having a relative humidity of from 5% to 99%.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said controlling of said arthropods is selected from the group consisting of cessation of all activity and becoming immobile and dormant, regurgitation of a recent meal, laying of an immature egg, laying of a mature egg, hatching of an immature egg, death of a nymph, searching for an exit from said PHPG containing environment, exiting from said PHPG containing environment, searching for a source of non PHPG air, locating to a source of non PHPG containing air, exhibiting frantic behavior, becoming disoriented, death of an insect egg, death of an insect pupae, death of an insect larva, and death of a mature insect.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said one or more arthropods are members of the phylogenic orders selected from the group consisting of Collembola, Thysanura, Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Phasmida, Orthoptera, Mantodea, Blattaria, Isoptera, Dermaptera, Plecoptera, Psocoptera, Phthiraptera, Hemiptera, Homoptera, Thysanoptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, Mecoptera, Siphonaptera, Diptera, Trichoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Scorpionida, Uropygi, and Araneae.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said generated hydrogen peroxide gas is continuously provided to the environment for a period of at least 1 minute and/or less than 10 days.

10. A method for controlling one or more arthropods in an enclosed environment comprising:

generating hydrogen peroxide gas by exposing a catalyst to ultraviolet light in the presence of humid ambient air, and causing water vapor within the humid ambient air to react to form non-hydrated hydrogen peroxide gas; and

directing the non-hydrated hydrogen peroxide gas into the enclosed environment in an amount of about 5 parts per million by weight (ppm) or less for a time period sufficient to control the one or more arthropods within the environment, wherein said arthropods do not include molds.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein said non-hydrated hydrogen peroxide gas comprises purified hydrogen peroxide gas (PHPG).

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said PHPG within the enclosed environment comprises 0.015 ppm of ozone or less.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the non-hydrated hydrogen peroxide gas is maintained within the enclosed environment at a level of 1.0 ppm or less.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein said humid ambient air has a relative humidity of from 5% to 99%.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein said non-hydrated hydrogen peroxide gas is continuously provided to the environment for a period of at least 1 minute and/or less than 10 days.

16. A method for controlling one or more arthropods in an environment comprising:

generating hydrogen peroxide gas by either (a) an oxidation reaction in which hydroxyl radicals derived from catalytic oxidation of atmospheric water vapor are reacted to form the hydrogen peroxide gas, or (b) a reduction reaction in which atmospheric oxygen is reacted with protons derived from catalytic oxidation of atmospheric water vapor to form the hydrogen peroxide gas; and

directing the generated hydrogen peroxide gas into the environment in an amount of about 5 parts per million by weight (ppm) or less for a time period sufficient to control the one or more arthropods within the environment, wherein said arthropods do not include molds.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein said generated hydrogen peroxide gas comprises purified hydrogen peroxide gas (PHPG).

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said PHPG within the environment comprises 0.015 ppm of ozone or less.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the generated hydrogen peroxide gas is maintained within the environment at a level of 1.0 ppm or less.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein said atmospheric water vapor is contained within ambient air having a relative humidity of from 5% to 99%.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein said generated hydrogen peroxide gas is continuously provided to the environment for a period of at least 1 minute and/or less than 10 days.
