Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are provided for the delivery of an implant into the prostatic urethra. Embodiments of delivery systems can include a delivery device for insertion into the patient and a proximal control device for use in controlling release of the implant from the delivery device.

Claims (48)

1. A method of deploying an expandable implant within a patient's urethra, the method comprising:

inserting an inner shaft into the urethra with the implant retained within an inner lumen of the inner shaft and covered by the inner shaft;

advancing a distal end of the inner shaft distally along the urethra to, or distally beyond, the patient's bladder neck;

pulling the distal end of the inner shaft back from the bladder neck in a proximal direction;

retracting the inner shaft proximally, relative to the implant, to a partially-retracted position in which the implant is at least partially uncovered while still being retained by the inner shaft;

positioning the implant at a target site within the urethra at a longitudinal position in the urethra proximal to the bladder neck; and

deploying the implant at the target site by further retracting the inner shaft to an extent sufficient to release the implant from the inner shaft.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the bladder neck as a datum for positioning the implant at the target site.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising holding the implant substantially stationary relative to the urethra when further retracting the inner shaft from the partially-retracted position.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising allowing the implant to expand radially when deploying the implant.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving a safety catch to enable the inner shaft to be retracted from a partially-retracted position.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant is retained by engagement with a grasper that remains covered by the inner shaft in the partially-retracted position but that is exposed by said further retraction of the inner shaft to release the implant.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising bending at least a distal portion of the inner shaft along its length.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the retracting the inner shaft to the partially-retracted position is performed after advancing the distal end of the inner shaft to, or distally beyond, the bladder neck.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the retracting the inner shaft to the partially-retracted position is performed after pulling the distal end of the inner shaft back from the bladder neck.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving an imaging device proximally relative to the implant.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving an imaging device is performed concurrently with the retracting the inner shaft proximally.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving an imaging device is performed concurrently with the deploying the implant.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving an imaging device distally relative to the implant.

14. A method of deploying an expandable implant within a patient's urethra, the method comprising:

inserting an inner shaft into the urethra with the implant retained within an inner lumen of the inner shaft and covered by the inner shaft;

retracting the inner shaft proximally, relative to the implant, to a partially-retracted position in which the implant is at least partially uncovered while still being retained by a delivery tube;

positioning the implant at a target site within the urethra moving a safety catch to enable the delivery tube to be retracted from the partially-retracted position; and

deploying the implant at the target site by further retracting the inner shaft to an extent sufficient to release the implant from the inner shaft.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

advancing a distal end of the inner shaft distally along the urethra to, or distally beyond, the patient's bladder neck; and

pulling the distal end of the inner shaft back from the bladder neck in a proximal direction.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising using the patient's bladder neck as a datum for positioning the implant at the target site.

17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising holding the implant substantially stationary relative to the urethra when further retracting the inner shaft from the partially-retracted position.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising allowing the implant to expand radially when deploying the implant.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the implant is retained by engagement with a grasper that remains covered by the inner shaft in the partially-retracted position but that is exposed by said further retraction of the inner shaft to release the implant.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the retracting the inner shaft to the partially-retracted position is performed after advancing the distal end of the inner shaft to, or distally beyond, the bladder neck.

21. The method of claim 14 , wherein the retracting the inner shaft to the partially-retracted position is performed after pulling the distal end of the inner shaft back from the bladder neck.

22. A method of deploying an expandable implant within a patient's urethra, the method comprising:

inserting an inner shaft into the urethra with the implant retained within an inner lumen of the inner shaft and covered by the inner shaft;

steering the inner shaft by bending at least a distal portion of the inner shaft along its length;

retracting the inner shaft proximally, relative to the implant, to a partially-retracted position in which the implant is at least partially uncovered while still being retained by the inner shaft;

positioning the implant at a target site within the urethra; and

deploying the implant at the target site by further retracting the inner shaft to an extent sufficient to release the implant from the inner shaft.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

advancing a distal end of the inner shaft distally along the urethra to, or distally beyond, the patient's bladder neck; and

pulling the distal end of the inner shaft back from the bladder neck in a proximal direction.

24. The method of claim 23 , further comprising using the patient's bladder neck as a datum for positioning the implant at the target site.

25. The method of claim 22 , further comprising holding the implant substantially stationary relative to the urethra when further retracting the inner shaft from the partially-retracted position.

26. The method of claim 22 , further comprising allowing the implant to expand radially when deploying the implant.

27. The method of claim 22 , further comprising moving a safety catch to enable the inner shaft to be retracted from a partially-retracted position.

28. The method of claim 22 , wherein the implant is retained by engagement with a grasper that remains covered by the inner shaft in the partially-retracted position but that is exposed by said further retraction of the inner shaft to release the implant.

29. The method of claim 22 , wherein the retracting the inner shaft to the partially-retracted position is performed after advancing the distal end of the inner shaft to, or distally beyond, the bladder neck.
