Abstract

Techniques are described for encoding and decoding digital video data using macroblocks that are larger than the macroblocks prescribed by conventional video encoding and decoding standards. For example, the techniques include encoding and decoding a video stream using macroblocks comprising greater than 16×16 pixels. In one example, an apparatus includes a video encoder configured to encode a coded unit comprising a plurality of video blocks, wherein at least one of the plurality of video blocks comprises a size of more than 16×16 pixels and to generate syntax information for the coded unit that includes a maximum size value, wherein the maximum size value indicates a size of a largest one of the plurality of video blocks in the coded unit. The syntax information may also include a minimum size value. In this manner, the encoder may indicate to a decoder the proper syntax decoder to apply to the coded unit.

Claims (28)

1. A method of decoding video data, the method comprising:

decoding two or more syntax elements in a sequence header associated with a sequence of pictures of the video data, comprising:

decoding a first syntax element in the sequence header, the first syntax element indicating a minimum partition size of blocks of the sequence of pictures; and

decoding a second syntax element in the sequence header the second syntax element indicating a maximum size of a block in the sequence of pictures, wherein the maximum size is greater than 16×16 pixels and the maximum size is greater than the minimum partition size;

decoding one of the blocks of the sequence of pictures, comprising determining that the one of the blocks has a starting size equal to the maximum size indicated by the second syntax element;

determining partitions of the one of the blocks to obtain a plurality of sub-blocks for the one of the blocks, comprising determining that at least one of the sub-blocks does not include further separately encoded sub-partitions based on the size of the at least one of the sub-blocks being equal to the minimum partition size indicated by the first syntax element; and

decoding the at least one of the sub-blocks based on the determined partitions.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first sub-block of the sub-blocks is encoded using a first encoding mode, wherein the first encoding mode comprises intra-prediction encoding mode, I-mode, the method further comprising:

decoding the first sub-block using the first encoding mode, comprising predicting the sub-block from one or more neighboring pixels according to the I-mode; and

decoding a second sub-block of the sub-blocks using a second encoding mode, wherein the second encoding mode comprises one of P-mode and B-mode, and wherein the second encoding mode is different from the first encoding mode.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first sub-block of the sub-blocks is encoded using a first encoding mode, wherein the first encoding mode comprises intra-prediction encoding mode, I-mode, the method further comprising:

decoding the first sub-block using the first encoding mode, comprising predicting the sub-block from one or more neighboring pixels according to the I-mode; and

decoding a second sub-block of the sub-blocks using a second encoding mode, wherein the second encoding mode comprises a second I-mode, wherein the second encoding mode is different from the first encoding mode and, wherein decoding the second sub-block using the second encoding mode comprises predicting the sub-block from one or more neighboring pixels according to the second I-mode.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising decoding one or more syntax elements representative of partitioning for the one of the blocks.

5. A device for decoding video data, the device comprising:

a memory configured to store decoded video blocks of the video data;

a processor in communication with the memory and configured to:

decode two or more syntax elements in a sequence header associated with a sequence of pictures of the video data, wherein the processor is configured to:

decode a first syntax element in the sequence header, the first syntax element indicating a minimum partition size of blocks of the sequence of pictures; and

decode a second syntax element in the sequence header, the second syntax element indicating a maximum size of a block in the sequence of pictures, wherein the maximum size is greater than 16×16 pixels and the maximum size is greater than the minimum partition size;

decode one of the blocks of the sequence of pictures, wherein to decode the one of the blocks, the processor is configured to determine that the one of the blocks has a starting size equal to the maximum size indicated by the second syntax element;

determine partitions of the one of the blocks to obtain a plurality of sub-blocks for the one of the blocks, wherein to determine the partitions, the processor is configured to determine that at least one of the sub-blocks does not include further separately encoded sub-partitions based on the size of the at least one of the sub-blocks being equal to the minimum partition size indicated by the first syntax element; and

decode the at least one of the sub-blocks based on the determined partitions.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein a first sub-block of the sub-blocks is encoded using a first encoding mode, wherein the first encoding mode comprises intra-prediction encoding mode, I-mode, wherein the processor is configured to decode the first sub-block using the first encoding mode, and wherein to decode the first sub-block, the processor is configured to predict the first sub-block from one or more neighboring pixels according to the I-mode; wherein the processor is further configured to decode a second sub-block of the sub-blocks using a second encoding mode, wherein the second encoding mode comprises one of P-mode and B-mode, and wherein the second encoding mode is different from the first encoding mode.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first sub-block of the sub-blocks is encoded using a first encoding mode, wherein the first encoding mode comprises intra-prediction encoding mode, I-mode, wherein the processor is configured to decode the first sub-block using the first encoding mode, and wherein to decode the first sub-block, the processor is configured to predict the first sub-block from one or more neighboring pixels according to the I-mode; wherein the processor is further configured to decode a second sub-block of the sub-blocks using a second encoding mode, wherein the second encoding mode comprises a second I-mode, wherein the second encoding mode is different from the first encoding mode and, wherein to decode the second sub-block using the second encoding mode, the processor is configured to predict the sub-block from one or more neighboring pixels according to the second I-mode.

8. The device of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to decode one or more syntax elements representative of partitioning for the block.

9. The device of claim 5 , further comprising a display configured to display the sequence of pictures.

10. The device of claim 5 , wherein apparatus comprises one or more of a camera, a computer, a mobile device, a broadcast receiver device, or a set-top box.
