Abstract

A phototherapy apparatus with interactive user interface for treating biological tissue of an animal or human target. The user interface comprises intuitive graphic menus which allow the clinicians or practitioners to define the properties of the biological tissue through easily observable physical characteristics such as weight, skin color, and hair color of the patient. The central control unit of the phototherapy apparatus then automatically optimizes the parameters of the light source according to the properties of the biological tissue and generates an appropriate treatment protocol to produce the optimum phototherapy result.

Claims (24)

1. A phototherapy apparatus for treating a non-human animal target or a human target, the phototherapy apparatus comprising:

at least one light source for producing therapeutic light;

a control unit configured for determining parameters of the therapeutic light in accordance to user defined medical conditions and physical characteristics, and generating an optimum treatment protocol for treating the animal target or human target;

an interactive user interface configured to display information to a user and to receive user input from the user, the user interface in operational communication with the control unit, the control unit configured to control the touchscreen to:

receive a user input to select the physical characteristics for treatment, the physical characteristics including a body area, a body size, and a skin color of the body, and concurrently display an indication of the selected body size and skin color,

wherein the control unit is further configured to determine the parameters based on the selected body area, the selected body size, and the selected skin color.

2. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interactive user interface is configured to display at least one of 2-D and 3-D graphics and animations for assisting the user to define the medical conditions and physical characteristics of the non-human animal target or human target.

3. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control unit determines at least one of an absorption coefficient, a scattering coefficient, and a penetration depth for the therapeutic light based on the selected physical characteristics of the non-human animal target or human target.

4. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the parameters of the therapeutic light comprise at least one of wavelength, power density, energy fluence, and pulsing parameters.

5. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the medical conditions comprise arthritis, edema/swelling, pain trauma, sprain/strain, wound, or post-surgical incision.

6. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the physical characteristics further include at least one of weight, body-build, and gender of the non-human animal target or human target.

7. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the target is an animal target, and wherein the physical characteristics further include at least one of species and hair color of the non-human animal target.

8. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutic light produces photochemical reaction in the non-human animal target or human target.

9. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source comprises a plurality of diode lasers.

10. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of diode lasers have multiple output wavelengths.

11. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs).

12. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of LEDs have multiple output wavelengths.

13. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interactive user interface is configured to allow the user to communicate with a remote server though a communication network.

14. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a database storing previous studies and clinical trials, the control unit generating the optimum treatment protocol using the studies and clinical trials stored in the database.

15. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to communicate with a remote server through an interface for performing updates on treatment protocols.

16. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interface with the remote server is a wired or wireless interface.

17. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the user interface configured to display a communications sub-menu for communicating with a remote server to access information on the remote server.

18. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to communicate with a remote server for tracking patient records.

19. The phototherapy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to communicate with a remote server real-time monitoring of the phototherapy apparatus.
