Abstract

A process and system are disclosed for downloading sensor data, stored in a memory device of a surgical cutting and fastening instrument, to an external or remote computer device. The process may involve storing data from one or more sensors of a surgical cutting and fastening instrument in a memory device of a control unit of the surgical cutting and fastening instrument during a surgical procedure involving the surgical cutting and fastening instrument. Next, after the surgical procedure, a data link between the control unit and the remote computer device is established. Then, the sensor data can be downloaded from the control unit to the remote computer device.

Claims (51)

2 . A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

a motor;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw; and

a driver actuatable by the motor to actuate a tissue-treatment function of the end effector, the driver movable between a beginning position and an ending position during an actuation stroke;

a plurality of sensors comprising an end effector sensor to monitor a parameter of the tissue-treatment function;

a control circuit coupled to the motor and the plurality of sensors, the control circuit configured to:

monitor signals from the plurality of sensors;

change a speed of the driver based on one of the monitored signals; and

stop the driver intermittently between the beginning position and the ending position based on one of the monitored signals.

The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , wherein the driver comprises a firing driver actuatable by the motor to cut and staple tissue clamped between the first jaw and the second jaw during a staple firing stroke, wherein the firing driver is movable from the beginning position to the ending position during the staple firing stroke, and wherein the parameter comprises a position of the firing driver.

The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , wherein the driver comprises a closure driver actuatable by the motor to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw during a jaw closure stroke, wherein the closure driver is movable from the beginning position to the ending position during the jaw closure stroke, and wherein the parameter comprises a position of the closure driver.

The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , wherein the driver comprises an articulation driver actuatable by the motor to articulate the end effector relative to a shaft, wherein the articulation driver is movable from the beginning position to the ending position during an articulation stroke, and wherein the parameter comprises a position of the articulation driver.

6 . The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , wherein the sensor comprises an encoder.

7 . The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , further comprising another sensor configured to detect a presence of a staple cartridge.

8 . A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:

a motor;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw; and

a driver actuatable by the motor to actuate a tissue-treatment function of the end effector between a first position and a second position during a drive stroke;

a plurality of sensors comprising an end effector sensor to monitor a parameter of the tissue-treatment function;

a control circuit coupled to the motor and the plurality of sensors, the control circuit configured to:

monitor a plurality of signals from the plurality of sensors;

monitor the parameter of the tissue-treatment function by way of the end effector sensor; and

adjust a control parameter of the motor intermittently between the first position and the second position based on one of the monitored signals.

9 . The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , wherein adjusting the control parameter of the motor comprises stopping the driver.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , wherein the driver comprises a firing driver actuatable by the motor to cut and staple tissue clamped between the first jaw and the second jaw during a staple firing stroke, wherein the firing driver is movable from the first position to the second position during the staple firing stroke, and wherein the parameter monitored by the end effector sensor comprises a position of the firing driver.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , wherein the driver comprises a closure driver actuatable by the motor to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw during a jaw closure stroke, wherein the closure driver is movable from the first position to the second position during the jaw closure stroke, and wherein the parameter monitored by the end effector sensor comprises a position of the closure driver.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , wherein the driver comprises an articulation driver actuatable by the motor to articulate the end effector relative to a shaft, wherein the articulation driver is movable from the first position to the second position during an articulation stroke, and wherein the parameter monitored by the end effector sensor comprises a position of the articulation driver.

13 . The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , further comprising another sensor configured to detect a presence of a staple cartridge.

14 . A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:

a motor;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw; and

a driver actuatable by the motor to actuate a tissue-treatment function of the end effector between a proximal position and a distal position;

a plurality of sensors comprising an end effector sensor to monitor a parameter of the tissue-treatment function;

a control circuit coupled to the plurality of sensors and the motor, the control circuit configured to:

actuate the motor to move the driver from the proximal position to the distal position;

monitor a plurality of signals from the plurality of sensors;

monitor the parameter of the driver by way of the end effector sensor;

stop the driver intermittently between the beginning position and the end position based on one of the monitored signals; and

actuate the motor to move the driver after the driver is stopped toward a third position.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein the driver comprises a firing driver actuatable by the motor to cut and staple tissue clamped between the first jaw and the second jaw during a staple firing stroke, wherein the firing driver is movable from the proximal position to the distal position during the staple firing stroke, and wherein the parameter comprises a position of the firing driver.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein the driver comprises a closure driver actuatable by the motor to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw during a jaw closure stroke, wherein the closure driver is movable from the proximal position to the distal position during the jaw closure stroke, and wherein the parameter comprises a position of the closure driver.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein the driver comprises an articulation driver actuatable by the motor to articulate the end effector relative to a shaft, wherein the articulation driver is movable from the proximal position to the distal position during an articulation stroke, and wherein the parameter comprises a position of the articulation driver.

18 . The surgical stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein the sensor comprises an encoder.

19 . The surgical stapling assembly of claim 14 , further comprising another sensor configured to detect a presence of a staple cartridge.
