Abstract

Surgical hub systems are disclosed. A surgical hub system comprises a surgical hub configured to communicably couple to a modular device comprising a sensor configured to detect data associated with the modular device and a device processor. The surgical hub comprises a hub processor, a hub memory coupled to the hub processor. The surgical hub system also comprises a distributed control system executable at least in part by each of the device processor and the hub processor. The distributed control system is configured to: receive the data detected by the sensor; determine control adjustments for the modular device according to the data; and control the modular device according to the control adjustments. When in a first mode, the distributed control system is executed by both the hub processor and the device processor. In a second mode, the distributed control system is executed solely by the device processor.

Claims (50)

1 . A surgical hub configured to communicably couple to a plurality of modular devices dispersed across a plurality of operating rooms within a network, the surgical hub comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the surgical hub to:

receive perioperative data from a radio frequency (RF) electrosurgical instrument, wherein the RF electrosurgical instrument is one of the plurality of modular devices, wherein the perioperative data comprises data detected by the RF electrosurgical instrument during a surgical procedure;

determine one or more event types associated with the perioperative data received from RF electrosurgical instrument;

retrieve historical aggregate perioperative data for each event type, wherein the historical aggregate perioperative data is based on the perioperative data from the plurality of modular devices;

determine a downtime between the surgical procedure and a previous surgical procedure based on the historical aggregate perioperative data and the perioperative data;

aggregate, for each event type, the perioperative data from the RF electrosurgical instrument, wherein the aggregated perioperative data comprises a total amount of downtime during a period of time;

determine a baseline perioperative data, for each event type, for the network based on the historical aggregated perioperative data;

generate a comparison by comparing, for each event type, the aggregated perioperative data with the baseline perioperative data;

in response to the comparison, control the RF electrosurgical instrument to adjust an energy level, wherein the adjustment to the energy level is configured to reduce instrument-related delay in preparing the RF electrosurgical instrument for use in the surgical procedure;

display feedback of the comparison to a user interface regarding the aggregated perioperative data for a subject event type deviating from the baseline perioperative data for the subject event type, wherein the feedback relates to an efficiency of an operating room associated with the surgical procedure; and

adjust a representation of the feedback displayed on the user interface in response to user input received by the user interface.

2 . The surgical hub of claim 1 , wherein the one or more event types further comprise a procedural type of the surgical procedure.

3 . The surgical hub of claim 1 , wherein the one or more event types further comprise a procedural step of the surgical procedure.

4 . The surgical hub of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the surgical hub to display the feedback in response to a query.

5 . The surgical hub of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the surgical hub to display the feedback based on the aggregated perioperative data deviating from the baseline perioperative data by a threshold amount.

6 . The surgical hub of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the surgical hub to provide a recommendation to the user interface to improve the efficiency of the operating room based on the historical aggregate perioperative data.

7 . A surgical hub configured to communicably couple to a plurality of modular devices dispersed across a plurality of operating rooms within a network and to a patient information database, the surgical hub comprising:

a control circuit configured to:

receive a plurality of data types comprising one or more of usage data from the plurality of modular devices, performance data from the plurality of modular devices, patient data from the patient information database, and patient outcome data from the patient information database, wherein the plurality of modular devices comprises at least a radio frequency (RF) electrosurgical instrument;

store the plurality of data types such that each of the plurality of data types is associated with another of the plurality of data types;

receive a query including a first data type of the plurality of data types and a second data type of the plurality of data types, wherein the first data type is different than the second data type;

display a comparison between the first data type and the second data type to a user interface, wherein the comparison is related to a total amount of downtime between surgical procedures during a period of time;

in response to the comparison, control the RF electrosurgical instrument to adjust an energy level, wherein the adjustment to the energy level is configured to reduce instrument-related delay in preparing the RF electrosurgical instrument for use in the surgical procedure;

adjust a representation of the comparison displayed on the user interface in response to user input received by the user interface; and

provide a recommendation to the user interface to improve the total amount of downtime based on the comparison.

8 . The surgical hub of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

quantify a correlation between each of the plurality of data types in association with another of the plurality of data types; and determine whether the correlation exceeds a threshold value.

9 . The surgical hub of claim 8 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to automatically report the correlation upon the correlation exceeding the threshold value.

10 . The surgical hub of claim 8 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to report the correlation upon receiving a command.

11 . The surgical hub of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of data types lack patient-identifying information.

12 . A surgical system, comprising:

a control circuit configured to:

receive detected perioperative data from one or more modular devices, wherein the one or more modular devices comprise at least a radio frequency (RF) electrosurgical instrument;

determine downtime between surgical procedures based on the perioperative data received from the one or more modular devices;

determine an event type associated with the perioperative data received from the one or more modular devices, wherein the event type comprises downtime between surgical procedures;

aggregate, for the event type, the detected perioperative data received the one or more modular devices, wherein the aggregated perioperative data comprises a total amount of the downtime during a period of time;

receive incident perioperative data from the RF electrosurgical instrument;

determine that the incident perioperative data received from the RF electrosurgical instrument is associated with the event type;

determine a baseline perioperative data, for the event type, based on the aggregate perioperative data received from the one or more modular devices;

generate a comparison by comparing, for the event type, the baseline perioperative data with the incident perioperative data;

in response to the comparison, control the RF electrosurgical instrument to adjust an energy level, wherein the adjustment to the energy level is configured to reduce instrument-related delay in preparing the RF electrosurgical instrument for use in the surgical procedure;

display the comparison to a user interface; and

adjust a representation of the comparison displayed on the user interface in response to user input received by the user interface.

The surgical system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to provide a recommendation to a user of the RF electrosurgical instrument based on the comparison, wherein the recommendation improves an efficiency of an operating room with the RF electrosurgical instrument.

The surgical system of claim 13 , wherein the aggregate perioperative data comprises an average length of time one or more modular devices are used in association with the event type, wherein the incident perioperative data comprises a length of time the RF electrosurgical instrument is used in association with the event type, and wherein the recommendation comprises an indication that the length of time the RF electrosurgical instrument is used exceeds the average length of time the one or more modular devices are used in association with the event type.

15 . The surgical system of claim 13 , wherein the recommendation further comprises a suggestion to reduce a length of time the RF electrosurgical instrument is used in association with the event type.

16 . The surgical system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to display the recommendation with the user interface based on the comparison in response to a query.

17 . The surgical system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to provide the recommendation based on the incident perioperative data deviating from the baseline perioperative data by a threshold amount.
