Abstract

Rotary drill bits may include one or more cutting element assemblies which include a cutter and a mounting system. In one embodiment, the mounting system includes a housing, a first bearing component disposed within the housing, and a second bearing component associated with the cutting element. In certain embodiments, the bearing components may comprise a table of superhard material bonded with a substrate. In one or more embodiments, the bearing components may include bearing surfaces that are arcuate. For example, the bearing surfaces may be substantially spherical (a portion of a sphere). The bearing components may be arranged to act as a radial bearing as well as a thrust bearing for the cutting element, enabling the cutting element to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the cutter, relative to the housing, while also enabling the longitudinal axis of the cutter to be displaced (change angles) relative to the housing.

Claims (41)

1 . A cutting insert assembly, comprising:

a cutting insert; and

a mounting system comprising:

a housing having a pocket formed therein, the pocket being sized and configured to receive a portion of the cutting insert;

at least one radial bearing component between the cutting insert and the housing;

at least one thrust bearing component between the cutting insert and the housing; and

at least one seal disposed between the housing and the cutting insert;

wherein the cutting insert is configured to rotate relative to the housing about a rotational axis of the cutting insert; and

wherein the at least one radial bearing component, the at least one thrust bearing component, and the cutting insert are cooperatively configured to enable the rotational axis of the cutting insert to angularly displace relative to a longitudinal axis of the housing.

2 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rotational axis of the cutting insert is configured to tilt relative to the housing as the cutting insert slides along at least one of the at least one radial bearing component or the at least one thrust bearing component.

3 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component, the housing configured to contain the cutting insert while enabling the cutting insert to move along a bearing surface of the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component.

4 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component.

5 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 4 , wherein the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component of the housing are formed by a single structure of the housing.

6 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cutting insert comprises the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component.

7 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 6 , wherein the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component of the cutting insert are formed by a single structure of the cutting insert.

8 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one radial bearing component comprises a first radial bearing component and a second radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component comprises a first thrust bearing component and a second thrust bearing component.

9 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 8 , wherein the housing comprises the first radial bearing component and the first thrust bearing component and the cutting insert comprises the second radial bearing component and the second thrust bearing component.

10 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 9 , wherein the housing comprises a single structure defining the first radial bearing component and the first thrust bearing component and the cutting insert comprises another single structure defining the second radial bearing component and the second thrust bearing component.

11 . A cutting insert assembly, comprising:

a cutting insert; and

a mounting system comprising:

a housing having a pocket formed therein, the pocket being sized and configured to receive a portion of the cutting insert;

at least one radial bearing component between the cutting insert and the housing;

at least one thrust bearing component between the cutting insert and the housing; and

at least one seal disposed between the housing and the cutting insert, the at least one radial bearing component, the at least one thrust bearing component, and the cutting insert being cooperatively configured to enable a rotational axis of the cutting insert to vary angularly relative to the housing.

12 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 11 , wherein the rotational axis of the cutting insert is configured to tilt relative to the housing as the cutting insert slides along at least one of the at least one radial bearing component or the at least one thrust bearing component.

13 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 11 , wherein the housing comprises the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component, the housing configured contain the cutting insert while enabling the cutting insert to move along a bearing surface of the at least one radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component.

14 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 11 , further comprising a rotatable coupling between the housing and the cutting insert.

15 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 14 , wherein the rotatable coupling between the housing and the cutting insert enables the rotational axis of the cutting insert to change angle relative to the housing.

16 . A cutting insert assembly, comprising:

a cutting insert; and

a mounting system comprising:

a housing having a pocket formed therein, the pocket being sized and configured to receive a portion of the cutting insert;

a rotatable coupling between the housing and the cutting insert;

at least one radial bearing component between the cutting insert and the housing;

at least one thrust bearing component between the cutting insert and the housing; and

at least one seal disposed between the housing and the cutting insert, the at least one radial bearing component, wherein the rotatable coupling between the housing and the cutting insert enables a rotational axis of the cutting insert to vary angularly relative to the housing.

17 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 16 , wherein the at least one radial bearing component, the at least one thrust bearing component, and the cutting insert being are cooperatively configured to enable the rotational axis of the cutting insert to vary angularly relative to the housing.

18 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 16 , wherein the rotational axis of the cutting insert is configured to tilt relative to the housing as the cutting insert slides along at least one of the at least one radial bearing component or the at least one thrust bearing component.

19 . The cutting insert assembly of claim 16 , wherein the at least one radial bearing component comprises a first radial bearing component and a second radial bearing component and the at least one thrust bearing component comprises a first thrust bearing component and a second thrust bearing component.
