Abstract

Systems and methods for inserting auxiliary content slots within portions of media assets determined to be of interest to users. Segments of a media asset being viewed by a user are identified as being of particular interest to the user, with reference to a stored set of user preferences. User preferences may be consulted to determine which of these segments may be of likely interest to the viewer. Slots for auxiliary content, such as an advertisement, are then added to those segments deemed to be of likely interest. Auxiliary content such as ads may accordingly be displayed to a user at points within media assets at which the user is more likely to be paying attention, increasing the likelihood that auxiliary content will be viewed and perhaps interacted with by the user.

Claims (73)

1. A method comprising:

retrieving, from a user profile, a plurality of preferences;

causing to be presented a first content item at a user device associated with the user profile;

while the first content item is currently being presented at the user device:

determining one or more plot elements for a portion of the first content item;

assigning a plot element label to the portion of the first content item, the plot element label indicative of the one or more plot elements at the portion of the first content item;

updating metadata corresponding to the portion of the first content item by adding the plot element label to the metadata;

comparing the plurality of preferences and the plot element label indicative of the one or more plot elements at the portion of the first content item;

determining, based on the comparing, that the one or more plot elements for the portion of the first content item align with a subset of preferences from the plurality of preferences;

based at least in part on the determining that the one or more plot elements for the portion of the first content item align with the subset of preferences:

determining a second content item comprising the one or more plot elements that align with the subset of preferences; and

causing to be presented at the user device associated with the user profile the second content item during playing of the portion of the first content item.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a time index corresponding to the portion of the first content item; and

wherein the second content item is presented at the time index.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a genre of the portion of the first content item, wherein the genre corresponds to at least one plot element of the one or more plot elements; and

wherein the second content item comprises an advertisement that has one or more attributes matching the at least one plot element, the advertisement depicting a purchasable product.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the first content item comprises a scene of the first content item, and wherein:

determining the one or more plot elements for the portion of the first content item further comprises identifying a classification for the scene of the first content item; and

comparing the plurality of preferences and the plot element label further comprises comparing the classification to the plurality of preferences.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inserting a supplemental content slot within the portion of the first content item; and

wherein the second content item is displayed within the supplemental content slot.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying a scene within the portion of the first content item, the identified scene corresponding to one or more of a song, at least a portion of a conversation, or a section of the first content item corresponding to a genre.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a plurality of time indices of the first content item to define a plurality of portions corresponding to the plurality of time indices; and

for each portion of the plurality of portions, determining a respective set of plot elements.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

computing, based on the subset of preferences, a plurality of weighted criteria corresponding to the one or more plot elements; and

wherein the second content item is determined based on the plurality of weighted criteria.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a time index corresponding to a period of low volume in the portion of the first content item; and

wherein the second content item is caused to be presented at the time index corresponding to the period of low volume in the portion of the first content item.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a time index corresponding to a period of static image in the portion of the first content item; and

wherein the second content item is caused to be presented at the time index corresponding to the period of static image in the portion of the first content item.

11. The method of claim 6 , further comprising causing to be presented the second content item before or after playing of the identified scene.

12. A system comprising:

communications circuitry configured to retrieve, from a user profile, a plurality of preferences; and

control circuitry configured to:

cause to be presented a first content item at a user device associated with the user profile;

while the first content item is currently being presented at the user device:

determine one or more plot elements for a portion of the first content item;

assign a plot element label to the portion of the first content item, the plot element label indicative of the one or more plot elements at the portion of the first content item;

update metadata corresponding to the portion of the first content item by adding the plot element label to the metadata;

compare the plurality of preferences and the plot element label indicative of the one or more plot elements at the portion of the first content item;

determine, based on the comparison, that the one or more plot elements for the portion of the first content item align with a subset of preferences from the plurality of preferences;

based at least in part on determining that the one or more plot elements for the portion of the first content item align with the subset of preferences:

determine a second content item comprising the one or more plot elements that align with the subset of preferences; and

cause to be presented at the user device associated with the user profile the second content item during playing of the portion of the first content item.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine a time index corresponding to the portion of the first content item; and

wherein the second content item is presented at the time index.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine a genre of the portion of the first content item, wherein the genre corresponds to at least one plot element of the one or more plot elements; and

wherein the second content item comprises an advertisement that has one or more attributes matching the at least one plot element, the advertisement depicting a purchasable product.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the portion of the first content item comprises a scene of the first content item, and wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

determine the one or more plot elements for the portion of the first content item by identifying a classification for the scene of the first content item; and

compare the plurality of preferences and the plot element label by comparing the classification to the plurality of preferences.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

insert a supplemental content slot within the portion of the first content item; and

wherein the second content item is displayed within the supplemental content slot.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

identify a scene within the portion of the first content item, the identified scene corresponding to one or more of a song, at least a portion of a conversation, or a section of the first content item corresponding to a genre.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate a plurality of time indices of the first content item to define a plurality of portions corresponding to the plurality of time indices; and

for each portion of the plurality of portions, determine a respective set of plot elements.

19. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

compute, based on the subset of preferences, a plurality of weighted criteria corresponding to the one or more plot elements; and

wherein the second content item is determined based on the plurality of weighted criteria.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

cause to be presented the second content item before or after playing of the identified scene.
