Abstract

A tool for cleaning debris from a wellbore comprises a rotational portion and a stationary portion. The rotational portion is configured to be coupled to a workstring disposed in the wellbore such that rotation of the workstring rotates the rotational portion. The stationary portion at least partially surrounds the rotational portion. The stationary portion is configured to remain stationary when the rotational portion and the workstring are rotated. The rotational portion and the stationary portion are shaped and configured such that when the workstring is at least partially disposed in well fluid present in the wellbore, rotation of the rotational portion causes the movement of well fluid such that well fluid flows in the workstring, thereby carrying debris from the wellbore in to the workstring.

Claims (40)

1. A method of removing debris from a wellbore that penetrates a surface, comprising:

connecting a fluid moving tool to an upper exterior housing of an upper end of a workstring assembly, the fluid moving tool including a stationary portion and a rotational portion that rotates when the upper exterior housing of the workstring assembly is rotated, wherein the stationary portion at least partially surrounds the rotational portion;

running the workstring assembly into the wellbore in which a first fluid is present, wherein the upper exterior housing is exterior to the workstring assembly so as to be exposed to an annulus formed by the wellbore and exterior of the workstring;

rotating the upper exterior housing relative to the stationary portion of the fluid moving tool to cause rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool relative to the stationary portion and thereby moving the first fluid into a lower end of the workstring assembly;

pumping the first fluid from the lower end of the workstring assembly, by the rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool, through the fluid moving tool with the debris suspended in the first fluid in a slurry-like mixture, and such that the first fluid is pumped through the upper end of the workstring assembly to the surface with the debris suspended in the first fluid; and

after the debris has been removed from the wellbore, introducing a ball to interact with a ball-actuated circulated sub included in the workstring to thus allow fluid to drain from the workstring as the workstring is being pulled from the wellbore.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting the upper exterior housing to a rotational power source that delivers rotational energy from the surface.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising anchoring the stationary portion during rotation of the rotational portion such that the stationary portion is stationary with respect to the rotational proton and with respect to the wellbore.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising introducing a second fluid into the annulus from the surface to enhance the flow of first fluid through the fluid moving tool.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rotational portion and the stationary portion are configured to produce a progressive cavity pump.

6. A method of removing debris from a wellbore that penetrates a surface, comprising:

connecting a fluid moving tool to an upper exterior housing of an upper end of a workstring assembly, the fluid moving tool including a stationary portion and a rotational portion that rotates when the upper exterior housing of the workstring assembly is rotated, wherein the stationary portion at least partially surrounds the rotational portion;

running the workstring assembly into the wellbore in which a first fluid is present, wherein the upper exterior housing is exterior to the workstring assembly so as to be exposed to an annulus formed by the wellbore and exterior of the workstring;

rotating the upper exterior housing relative to the stationary portion of the fluid moving tool to cause rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool relative to the stationary portion and thereby moving the first fluid into a lower end of the workstring assembly;

capturing the wellbore debris in the fluid in a debris chamber in the lower end of the workstring assembly; and

pumping the first fluid from the lower end of the workstring assembly, by the rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool, through the fluid moving tool, wherein the pumping the first fluid further includes pumping the first fluid through one or more ports located at or above the fluid moving tool so as to expel the fluid from the workstring into annulus.

7. A method of removing debris from a wellbore that penetrates a surface, comprising:

connecting a fluid moving tool to an upper exterior housing of an upper end of a workstring assembly, the fluid moving tool including a stationary portion and a rotational portion that rotates when the upper exterior housing of the workstring assembly is rotated, wherein the stationary portion at least partially surrounds the rotational portion;

running the workstring assembly into the wellbore in which a first fluid is present, wherein the upper exterior housing is exterior to the workstring assembly so as to be exposed to an annulus formed by the wellbore and exterior of the workstring;

rotating the upper exterior housing relative to the stationary portion of the fluid moving tool to cause rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool relative to the stationary portion and thereby moving the first fluid into a lower end of the workstring assembly; and

moving the workstring assembly from a first configuration wherein rotation of the upper exterior portion results in rotation of the lower end and a second configuration wherein rotation of the upper exterior portion is independent from the lower end.

8. A method of removing debris from a wellbore that penetrates a surface, comprising:

connecting a fluid moving tool to an upper exterior housing of an upper end of a workstring assembly, the fluid moving tool including a stationary portion and a rotational portion that rotates when the upper exterior housing of the workstring assembly is rotated, wherein the stationary portion at least partially surrounds the rotational portion;

running the workstring assembly into the wellbore in which a first fluid is present, wherein the upper exterior housing is exterior to the workstring assembly so as to be exposed to an annulus formed by the wellbore and exterior of the workstring; and

rotating the upper exterior housing relative to the stationary portion of the fluid moving tool to cause rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool relative to the stationary portion and thereby moving the first fluid into a lower end of the workstring assembly; and

wherein the rotational portion comprises:

a rotor;

a shaft configured to couple to the rotor and rotate with the rotor; and

a coupler configured to be coupled at a first end to the upper exterior housing of the workstring assembly and at a second end to the shaft such that the coupler rotates with the upper exterior housing, the shaft, and the rotor, wherein the coupler defines a bore through which well fluid can flow; and

wherein the shaft defines at least one aperture through which well fluid can flow from the bore of the coupler to a space between the rotor and the stationary portion.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing a debris breakup device proximate the lower end of the workstring assembly, wherein rotation of the upper exterior housing rotates the debris breakup device to break up accumulated debris in the wellbore.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising connecting the upper exterior housing to a rotational power source that delivers rotational energy from the surface.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising anchoring the stationary portion during rotation of the rotational portion such that the stationary portion is stationary with respect to the rotational proton and with respect to the wellbore.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising moving the workstring assembly from a first configuration wherein rotation of the upper exterior portion results in rotation of the lower end and a second configuration wherein rotation of the upper exterior portion is independent from the lower end.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising introducing a second fluid into the annulus from the surface to enhance the flow of first fluid through the fluid moving tool.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the rotational portion and the stationary portion are configured to produce a progressive cavity pump.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising pumping the first fluid from the lower end of the workstring assembly, by the rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool, through the fluid moving tool with the debris suspended in the first fluid in a slurry-like mixture, and through the upper end of the workstring assembly to the surface with the debris suspended in the first fluid.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

capturing the wellbore debris in the fluid in a debris chamber in the lower end of the workstring assembly; and

pumping the first fluid from the lower end of the workstring assembly, by the rotation of the rotational portion of the fluid moving tool, through the fluid moving tool, wherein the pumping the first fluid further includes pumping the first fluid through one or more ports located at or above the fluid moving tool so as to expel the fluid from the workstring into annulus.
