Abstract

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for geographic region-based network address translation (NAT) between a public network and a private network. In certain examples, region-based NAT may assist to reduce latency, enhance quality, enhance security, and/or improve efficiency of network communications. In response to a data packet from a first port of a private IP address, of an endpoint in the private network, a region of the private network that includes an endpoint identified by the private IP address is determined. A public IP address is selected that is mapped to the determined region in the database. An available port of the selected public IP address is assigned for NAT. NAT is performed for data communicated between the public and private networks using a mapping of the first port of the first IP address to the second port of the second IP address.

Claims (42)

1. A computer-implemented method for use in a data-communications system, the method comprising:

receiving a packet from an endpoint in a private local area network;

determining a geographic region in which the endpoint in the private local area network is located;

accessing a database to obtain a set of predetermined public IP addresses based on the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located;

selecting one of the predetermined public IP addresses as a selected public IP address;

assigning a port for the selected public IP address; and

performing region-based network address translation (NAT) for communication between the private local area network and a public network based on a mapping of a port of a private IP address and the assigned port for the selected public IP address;

wherein the database comprises a data structure that associates a geographic region identifier with the predetermined public IP addresses, the geographic region identifier identifying the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising replacing the private IP address with the selected public IP address.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting a set of resources for providing the endpoint with a data-communications service.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the set of the resources is selected using one or more machine learning algorithms.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the method is performed by an apparatus having a network interface configured to receive the packet, a region determination circuit configured to determine the geographic region, and a mapping circuit configured to access the database to obtain the set of the predetermined public IP addresses based on the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the act of selecting the set of resources is performed to achieve one or more transmission characteristics related to the data-communications service, wherein the one or more transmission characteristics comprise one or more of: bandwidth, latency, dropped data packets, or bit error rate.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the act of selecting the set of resources is based on an operating parameter of interest.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein operating parameter of interest is identified or specified via an input query received by the data-communications system.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein the operating parameter of interest corresponds to a request that data metrics be analyzed.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein the operating parameter of interest includes an identifier for a data metric, or a criterion for identifying the data metric.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the set of resources is selected based on one or more desired network-based transmission characteristics to be achieved in relation to providing the data-communications service.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , further comprising reporting on at least one trend concerning a status or use of the data-communication service.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising responding to an input query concerning the endpoint, the input query requesting one or more data metrics that exhibit a particular trend.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a data-communication metric meeting a criterion; and

providing, based on the data-communication metric meeting the criterion, a signature for detection of a data path that is congested.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising providing alert messages, to one or more users or to a network administrator, when data metrics or analysis satisfies a set of alert criteria or indicates that a network resource is non-functional.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein in the mapping, the geographic region is divided into multiple smaller geographic regions.

17. An apparatus comprising:

a network interface configured to receive a packet from an endpoint in a private local area network;

a region determination circuit configured to determine a geographic region in which the endpoint in the private local area network is located; and

a mapping circuit configured to access a database to obtain a set of predetermined public IP addresses based on the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located, and to select one of the predetermined public IP addresses as a selected public IP address;

wherein the apparatus is configured to assign a port for the selected public IP address; and

wherein the apparatus is configured to perform region-based network address translation (NAT) for communication between the private local area network and a public network based on a mapping of a port of a private IP address and the assigned port for the selected public IP address;

wherein the database comprises a data structure that associates a geographic region identifier with the predetermined public IP addresses, the geographic region identifier identifying the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the circuit includes a processing circuit configured to determine a data metric for data routed between the public network and the private local area network.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the apparatus is configured to replace the private IP address with the selected public IP address.

20. A non-transient storage medium, or storage device, including executable computer instructions which when executed, cause a set of actions to be carried out, the set of actions comprising:

receiving a packet from an endpoint in a private local area network;

determining a geographic region in which the endpoint in the private local area network is located;

accessing a database to obtain a set of predetermined public IP addresses based on the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located;

selecting one of the predetermined public IP addresses as a selected public IP address;

assigning a port for the selected public IP address; and

performing region-based network address translation (NAT) for communication between the private local area network and a public network based on a mapping of a port of a private IP address and the assigned port for the selected public IP address;

wherein the database comprises a data structure that associates a geographic region identifier with the predetermined public IP addresses, the geographic region identifier identifying the geographic region in which the end point in the private local area network is located.
