Abstract

Briefly, in accordance with one or more embodiments, virtualized network function resources may be managed in a network. Performance measurements may be received for at least one mobility management entity (MME) in an MME pool, or for other network elements. If at least one of the performance measurements exceeds at least one predetermined threshold, instantiation of a new mobility management entity virtual network function (MME VNF) may be requested, and the MME VNF may be instantiated in response to the request. One or more user equipment (UE) devices managed by the MME pool may be connected to the added MME VNF.

Claims (30)

1 . A system operating as a network functions virtualization network manager (NFV NM) comprising:

one or more processors configured to:

determine that a virtual network function (VNF) has been instantiated;

in response to determining the VNF has been instantiated, send, to a network functions virtualization orchestrator (NFVO), a scaling request to add a further VNF with connectivity to a non-virtualized network function, wherein the scaling request comprises an indication of the VNF and a type of the scaling request.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

receive, from the NFVO, an indication that a scaling operation has been started.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

receive, from the NFVO, an indication that a scaling operation has been completed.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the further VNF is a new instance of a VNF.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the further VNF is an existing VNF.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the scaling request comprises an identification of the existing VNF.

7 . A method performed by a network functions virtualization network manager (NFV NM), comprising:

determining that a virtual network function (VNF) has been instantiated;

in response to determining that the VNF has been instantiated, sending, to a network functions virtualization orchestrator (NFVO), a scaling request to add a further VNF with connectivity to a non-virtualized network function, wherein the scaling request comprises an indication of the VNF and a type of the scaling request.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving, from the NFVO, an indication that a scaling operation has been started.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving, from the NFVO, an indication that a scaling operation has been completed.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the further VNF is a new instance of a VNF.

11 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the further VNF is an existing VNF.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the scaling request comprises an identification of the existing VNF.

13 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions, wherein execution of the instructions causes a processor to perform operations comprising:

determining that a virtual network function (VNF) has been instantiated;

in response to determining that the VNF has been instantiated, sending, to a network functions virtualization orchestrator (NFVO), a scaling request to add a further VNF with connectivity to a non-virtualized network function, wherein the scaling request comprises an indication of the VNF and a type of the scaling request.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, from the NFVO, an indication that a scaling operation has been started.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, from the NFVO, an indication that a scaling operation has been completed.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the further VNF is a new instance of a VNF.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the further VNF is an existing VNF, wherein the scaling request comprises an identification of the existing VNF.
