Abstract

A ball striking device, such as a golf club head, has a face with a striking surface configured for striking a ball and a channel extending across a portion of the sole. The channel may be recessed from adjacent surfaces of the sole and have a depth of recession from the adjacent surfaces of the sole. The channel may have a cross-sectional profile that is asymmetric with a front wall and a rear wall where the front wall is longer than the rear wall. The channel may also have a center thickness that is different than a thickness at the heel and toe sides.

Claims (40)

1 . A golf club head comprising:

a face having a striking surface configured for striking a ball, a face height between 28 to 40 mm;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face, the body having a crown, a sole, a heel, a hosel, and a toe; and

a channel extending across a portion of the sole in a heel to toe direction,

wherein the channel is recessed from adjacent surfaces of the sole and has a depth of recession from the adjacent surfaces of the sole, wherein the channel comprises a center portion extending across a center of the sole, a heel portion extending from a heel end of the center portion toward the heel, and a toe portion extending from a toe end of the center portion toward the toe,

wherein the channel comprises a rear wall, a front wall, a front edge, a rear edge, and a width defined between the front and rear edges, and wherein the width of the center portion of the channel is substantially constant, and the width of the channel at both the heel and toe portions is greater than the width of the center portion;

wherein an angle in a range between 75 and 90 degrees is formed between the front wall and the rear wall, in a cross-section defined by a plane positioned perpendicular to a ground plane in a front-to-back direction through the center portion of the channel;

wherein the center portion of the channel comprises an expanded trough positioned between the front wall and the rear wall;

wherein the expanded trough comprises a first wall connected to the front wall, a second wall connected to the rear wall, a bottom positioned between the first wall and the second wall, and a top defined by a plane extending through a intersection of the front wall and the first wall and a intersection of the rear wall and the second wall;

wherein the bottom of the expanded trough defines a greatest depth of recession from the adjacent surfaces of the sole; and

wherein the first wall and the second wall of the expanded trough extend in a direction perpendicular to the ground plane.

2 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the hosel comprises a hosel interconnecting structure; and further wherein an access for the hosel interconnection structure is in communication with and intersects the heel portion of the channel.

3 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the center portion of the channel has an asymmetric cross-sectional shape where the front wall of the center portion of the channel has a first length and the rear wall of the center portion of the channel has a second length wherein the first length is greater than the second length, and wherein a ratio of the first length to the second length is in a range between 2.5:1 and 4.0:1.

4 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the narrowest width portions of the heel and toe portions of the channel are immediately adjacent the center portion of the channel.

5 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the depth of the center portion is within a range of 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm.

6 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the front wall of the center portion and the rear wall of the center portion have a linear shape in a cross-section defined by a plane positioned perpendicular to a ground plane in a front-to-back direction through the center portion of the channel.

7 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the center portion of the channel comprises a midpoint and two ends; and wherein the depth of the channel is greatest at the midpoint and is shallower more proximate each of the two ends.

8 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the heel portion of the channel comprises a forward heel portion, a rear heel portion, and a heel rib member where the heel rib member separates the forward heel portion from the rear heel portion; and

wherein the toe portion of the channel comprises a forward toe portion, a rear toe portion, and a toe rib member where the toe rib member separates the forward toe portion from the rear toe portion.

9 . The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein the forward heel portion has a depth that differs from a depth of the rear heel portion; and the forward toe portion has a depth that differs from a depth of the rear toe portion.

10 . A golf club head comprising:

a face having a striking surface configured for striking a ball, a face height between 28 to 40 mm;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face, the body having a crown, a sole, a heel, a hosel, and a toe; and

a channel extending across a portion of the sole in a heel to toe direction,

wherein the channel is recessed from adjacent surfaces of the sole and has a depth of recession from the adjacent surfaces of the sole, wherein the channel comprises a center portion extending across a center of the sole, a heel portion extending from a heel end of the center portion toward the heel, and a toe portion extending from a toe end of the center portion toward the toe,

wherein the channel comprises a rear wall, a front wall, a front edge, a rear edge, and a width defined between the front and rear edges, and wherein the width of the center portion of the channel is substantially constant, and the width of the channel at both the heel and toe portions is greater than the width of the center portion;

wherein an angle in a range between 90 and 120 degrees is formed between the front wall and the rear wall, in a cross-section defined by a plane positioned perpendicular to a ground plane in a front-to-back direction through the center portion of the channel;

wherein the center portion of the channel comprises an expanded trough positioned between the front wall and the rear wall;

wherein the expanded trough comprises a first wall connected to the front wall, a second wall connected to the rear wall, a bottom positioned between the first wall and the second wall, and a top defined by a plane extending through a intersection of the front wall and the first wall and a intersection of the rear wall and the second wall;
