Claims (51)

1 . A wearable, comprising:

a first earpiece having

a first wireless module to send data wirelessly to a mobile phone or to a cloud,

a plurality of first microphones to produce first audio data,

a first motion sensor to produce first motion data, and

a first processor that is configured to:

perform first digital signal processing on the first audio data or the first motion data;

determine whether the first earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources; and

shift or pass the first digital signal processing to the mobile phone or to the cloud by using the first wireless module to transfer the first audio data or the first motion data to the mobile phone or to the cloud, in response to determining that the first earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources.

2 . The wearable of claim 1 wherein the first processor is further configured to use the first wireless module to transfer the first audio data or the first motion data to the mobile phone or the cloud when a voice activity detection or a keyword detection has a confidence of speech content that is below a confidence threshold, and wherein the mobile phone or the cloud then processes the first audio data or the first motion data for speech content.

3 . The wearable of claim 1 wherein the first wireless module is to send the data wirelessly using a Bluetooth protocol.

4 . The wearable of claim 1 wherein the first wireless module is to send the data wirelessly using a Wi-Fi protocol.

5 . The wearable of claim 1 wherein the first wireless module is to send the data wirelessly using a Bluetooth protocol.

6 . The wearable of claim 1 wherein the first wireless module is to send the data wirelessly using a Wi-Fi protocol.

7 . The wearable of claim 1 further comprising:

a second earpiece having

a second wireless module to send data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud,

a plurality of second microphones to produce second audio data,

a second motion sensor to produce second motion data, and

a second processor that is configured to:

perform second digital signal processing on the second audio data or the second motion data;

determine whether the second earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources; and

shift or pass the second digital processing to the mobile phone or to the cloud by using the second wireless module to transfer the second audio data or the second motion data to the mobile phone or to the cloud, in response to determining that the second earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources,

wherein each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece comprises a separate power source.

8 . The wearable of claim 7 wherein the second processor or the first processor determines which of the first earpiece or the second earpiece, not both, is to send the data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud.

9 . The wearable of claim 8 wherein the second processor or the first processor determines which of the first earpiece or the second earpiece, not both, is to send the data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud, based on:

the second processor or the first processor determining i) a battery life remaining in each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, ii) a level of speech detection by each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, iii) a level of noise measured by each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, or iv) a quality measure of an ear canal seal for each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece.

10 . The wearable of claim 7 wherein each of the first processor and the second processor periodically receives a message from the mobile phone that requests a power level update, and based on the message a digital processing load is spread between the first earpiece and the second earpiece thereby allowing the separate power source in the second earpiece to remain at a higher energy level than the separate power source in the first earpiece.

11 . A method for efficiency among devices, the method comprising:

performing, by a first processor in a first earpiece, digital signal processing on first data in the first earpiece;

determining whether the first earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources; and

shifting or passing the digital signal processing to a mobile phone or to a cloud by using a first wireless module in the first earpiece to transfer the first data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud, in response to determining that the first earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources.

12 . The method of claim 11 wherein the first data is first audio data, the method further comprising the first processor using the first wireless module to transfer a first audio data to the mobile phone or the cloud if a voice activity detection or a keyword detection has a confidence of speech content that is below a confidence threshold, and wherein the mobile phone or the cloud then processes first audio data for speech content.

13 . The method of claim 11 further comprising:

performing, by a second processor in a second earpiece, second digital signal processing on a second data in the second earpiece;

determining whether the second earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources; and

shifting or passing the second digital signal processing to the mobile phone or to the cloud by using a second wireless module in the second earpiece to transfer the second data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud, in response to determining that the second earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources.

14 . The method of claim 13 wherein the second processor or the first processor determines which of the first earpiece or the second earpiece, not both, is to shift or pass the digital signal processing of the first data or the second data to the mobile phone or to the cloud.

15 . The method of claim 13 wherein the second processor or the first processor determines which of the first earpiece or the second earpiece, not both, is to send the first data or the second data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud, based on:

the second processor or the first processor determining i) a battery life remaining in each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, ii) a level of speech detection by each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, iii) a level of noise measured by each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, or iv) a quality measure of an ear canal seal for each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece.

16 . The method of claim 13 further comprising:

periodically receiving, by each of the first processor and the second processor, a message from the mobile phone that requests a power level update, and based on the message spreading a digital processing load between the first earpiece and the second earpiece thereby allowing a first power source in the second earpiece to remain at a higher energy level than a second power source in the first earpiece.

17 . A memory comprising instructions stored in the memory that configure a first processor in a first earpiece to:

perform first digital signal processing on a first data in the first earpiece;

determine whether the first earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources; and

shift or pass the first digital signal processing to a mobile phone or to a cloud by using a first wireless module in the first earpiece to transfer the first data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud, in response to determining that the first earpiece is limited in power resources or processing resources.

18 . The memory of claim 17 further comprising instructions stored in the memory that configure the first processor to, when the first data is first audio data, transfer using the first wireless module the first audio data to the mobile phone or the cloud if a voice activity detection or a keyword detection has a confidence of speech content that is below a confidence threshold, and wherein the mobile phone or the cloud then processes the first audio data for speech content.

19 . The memory of claim 17 wherein the instructions configure the first processor to determine which of the first earpiece or a second earpiece, not both, is to send data wirelessly to the mobile phone or to the cloud, based on

the first processor determining i) a battery life remaining in each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, ii) a level of speech detection by each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, iii) a level of noise measured by each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece, or iv) a quality measure of a an ear canal seal for each of the first earpiece and the second earpiece.

20 . The memory of claim 17 wherein the instructions configure the first processor to

periodically receive a message from the mobile phone that requests a power level update and based on the message a digital processing load is spread between the first earpiece and a second earpiece thereby allowing a first power source in the second earpiece to remain at a higher energy level than a second power source in the first earpiece.
