40 . A computer-implemented system for dispensing a medication to a subject, comprising:

a processor configured to execute computer executable instructions, wherein the computer executable instructions comprise:

i. detecting with an image detector a visual element of the medication, wherein the visual element comprises a feature of the medication, and wherein the medication is positioned within the verification area;

ii. verifying the medication positioned in the verification area based on a determination by the processor that the visual element acquired by the image detector of the medication is a feature of the medication to be dispensed; and

iii. selectively allowing the medication to enter a dispensing area.

41 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise identifying with a sensor, an identifier of a pill cartridge storing the medication, wherein the pill cartridge is comprised in an array of pill cartridges, wherein the array of pill cartridges comprises a second pill cartridge comprising an identifier that is different than the identifier of the pill cartridge storing the medication;

42 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise extending one or more dispensing drawers to allow the subject to retrieve the medication from the one or more dispensing drawers.

43 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the image detector comprises a camera sensor.

44 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , further configured to dispense a plurality of medications.

45 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise:

(a) scanning the pill cartridges within the array of pill cartridges with an indexing sensor; and

(b) locating the pill cartridge storing the medication based on the identifier of the pill cartridge storing the medication.

46 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise engaging a drive gear to transfer the medication from the pill cartridge storing the medication to the verification area.

47 . The computer-implemented system of claim 46 , wherein the drive gear is a traveling drive gear configured to travel along the array of pill cartridges.

48 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise:

(a) controlling a camera; and

(b) recording with the camera the dispensing of the medication positioned within the one or more dispensing drawers.

49 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the verifying comprises comparing the feature of the medication to a characteristic of the medication to be dispensed, and wherein the characteristic of the medication to be dispensed is stored in a database.

50 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions comprise a machine learning algorithm.

51 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise communicating with a remote computer system.

52 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise allowing verification of the medication or dispensing of the medication to be remotely controlled or monitored by a medical professional.

53 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise authenticating the subject prior to dispensing of the medication to the subject.

54 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the authenticating comprises acquiring biometric data of the subject.

55 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise measuring a vital sign of the subject.

56 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise communicating with a peripheral device.

57 . The computer-implemented system of claim 56 , wherein the peripheral device comprises a global positioning system (GPS), a blood pressure monitor, a blood glucose monitor, a CPAP machine, an electrocardiogram device, a spirometer, a pulse oximeter, a digital scale, a thermometer, or any combination thereof.

58 . The computer-implemented system of claim 40 , wherein the computer executable instructions further comprise storing data obtained from the subject or information describing the medication on a server or database.

59 . A patient-side medical device comprising:

a. a dispensing area comprising a plurality of drawers adapted to receive or dispense one or more medications, wherein the plurality of drawers is configured to allow dispensing to be remotely controlled or monitored by a medical professional;

b. a rotating wheel mechanism configured to funnel the medication by gravity from the rotating wheel mechanism via a chute to the dispensing area,

wherein the rotating wheel mechanism comprises one or more columnar medication reservoirs; and

wherein at least one columnar medication reservoir of the one or more columnar medication reservoirs is configured to hold a plurality of medication cartridges; and

c. at least one visual display, wherein at least one of the at least one visual display is configured to allow communication with the medical professional.

60 . A patient-side medical device comprising:

a. a dispensing area comprising a plurality of drawers adapted to receive or dispense one or more medications;

b. a verification area; and

c. a mechanism configured to funnel a medication from the verification area to a dispensing area.
