Abstract

A method for adaptive presentation of media content includes receiving a first version of a video content item, causing the first version of the video content item to be presented within a video viewport having first dimensions, receiving user input indicating a user request to change first dimensions of the video viewport to second dimensions, determining an area of interest in the video content item, wherein the area of interest is included in a frame of the video content item, generating, based on the second dimensions of the video viewport and the area of interest in a frame of the video content item, a second version of the video content item for presentation on a user device, and causing the second version of the video content item to be presented within the video viewport having the second dimensions on the user device, wherein the area of interest is placed differently within the frame in the second version of the video content item relative to the first version of the video content item.

Claims (34)

1. A method for adaptive presentation of media content, the method comprising:

receiving a first version of a video content item;

causing the first version of the video content item to be presented within a video viewport having first dimensions;

receiving user input indicating a user request to change the first dimensions of the video viewport to second dimensions, the user input comprising a selection, within a frame of the video content item, of a frame portion having the second dimensions and defining an area of interest in the video content item, wherein the area of interest is included in the frame of the video content item;

generating, based on the second dimensions of the video viewport and the area of interest in the frame of the video content item, a second version of the video content item for presentation on a user device; and

causing the second version of the video content item to be presented within the video viewport having the second dimensions on the user device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second version of the video content item corresponds to a device type of a requesting device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the area of interest corresponds to a face of an entity in the frame of the video content item.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the area of interest is identified based on parameters specified by a creator of the first version of the video content item and the second version of the video content item.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first version of the video content item and the second version of the video content item have different aspect ratios.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the frame is included in the first version of the video content item and is not included in the second version of the video content item.

7. A system for adaptive presentation of media content, the system comprising:

a memory; and

a computer processor, coupled to the memory, to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first version of a video content item;

causing the first version of the video content item to be presented within a video viewport having first dimensions;

receiving user input indicating a user request to change the first dimensions of the video viewport to second dimensions, the user input comprising a selection, within a frame of the video content item, of a frame portion having the second dimensions and defining an area of interest in the video content item, wherein the area of interest is included in the frame of the video content item;

generating, based on the second dimensions of the video viewport and the area of interest in the frame of the video content item, a second version of the video content item for presentation on a user device; and

causing the second version of the video content item to be presented within the video viewport having the second dimensions on the user device.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second version of the video content item corresponds to a device type of a requesting device.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the area of interest corresponds to a face of an entity in the frame of the video content item.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the area of interest is identified based on parameters specified by a creator of the first version of the video content item and the second version of the video content item.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first version of the video content item and the second version of the video content item have different aspect ratios.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein a portion of the frame is included in the first version of the video content item and is not included in the second version of the video content item.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions, which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first version of a video content item;

causing the first version of the video content item to be presented within a video viewport having first dimensions;

receiving user input indicating a user request to change the first dimensions of the video viewport to second dimensions, the user input comprising a selection, within a frame of the video content item, of a frame portion having the second dimensions and defining an area of interest in the video content item, wherein the area of interest is included in the frame of the video content item;

generating, based on the second dimensions of the video viewport and the area of interest in the frame of the video content item, a second version of the video content item for presentation on a user device; and

causing the second version of the video content item to be presented within the video viewport having the second dimensions on the user device.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the second version of the video content item corresponds to a device type of a requesting device.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the area of interest corresponds to a face of an entity in the frame of the video content item.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the area of interest is identified based on parameters specified by a creator of the first version of the video content item and the second version of the video content item.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the first version of the video content item and the second version of the video content item have different aspect ratios.
