Abstract

In general, the present disclosure includes a system, method and architecture for use in analyzing content of a social network data to identify a financial market trend, e.g., a trend associated with a financial market instrument.

Claims (38)

1 . A method comprising:

determining, by a computing device, a trend in number of references to a financial market instrument using a corpus of messages of a number of users of at least one online messaging service, each message of the corpus containing a reference to the financial market instrument;

selecting, by the computing device, the financial market instrument using the determined trend in number of references to the financial market instrument;

generating, by the computing device, a graphical user interface (GUI) for an online financial information provider, the GUI comprising information indicating the determined trend in number of references to the financial market instrument; and

causing, via the computing device, the generated GUI to be displayed by at least one client computing device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the computing device, a sentiment associated with the financial market instrument using the corpus of messages.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the identified sentiment is used with the determined trend in number of references in selecting the financial market instrument.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the financial market instrument selection further comprises selecting a plurality of financial market instruments comprising the financial market instrument and at least one additional financial market instrument, a respective additional financial market instrument being selected using a trend in number of references determined for the respective additional financial market instrument, the GUI further comprising information indicating the trend in number of references determined for each of the plurality of financial market instruments selected.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the information of the GUI comprises a listing of the plurality of financial market instruments sorted based on the trend and sentiment determined for each of the plurality of financial market instruments.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the trend in number of references comprises a percentage change in the number of references to the financial market instrument from a first interval of time to a second interval of time.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the percentage change indicates whether the number of references to the financial market instrument is trending up, down or is neutral.

8 . The method of claim 1 , causing further comprising:

communicating, via the computing device, the generated GUI to the at least one client computing device.

9 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium tangibly encoded with computer-executable instructions that when executed by a processor associated with a computing device perform a method comprising:

determining a trend in number of references to a financial market instrument using a corpus of messages of a number of users of at least one online messaging service, each message of the corpus containing a reference to the financial market instrument;

selecting the financial market instrument using the determined trend in number of references to the financial market instrument;

generating a graphical user interface (GUI) for an online financial information provider, the GUI comprising information indicating the determined trend in number of references to the financial market instrument; and

causing the generated GUI to be displayed by at least one client computing device.

10 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , the method further comprising:

identifying a sentiment associated with the financial market instrument using the corpus of messages.

11 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the identified sentiment is used with the determined trend in number of references in selecting the financial market instrument.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the financial market instrument selection further comprises selecting a plurality of financial market instruments comprising the financial market instrument and at least one additional financial market instrument, a respective additional financial market instrument being selected using a trend in number of references determined for the respective additional financial market instrument, the GUI further comprising information indicating the trend in number of references determined for each of the plurality of financial market instruments selected.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the information of the GUI comprises a listing of the plurality of financial market instruments sorted based on the trend and sentiment determined for each of the plurality of financial market instruments.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the trend in number of references comprises a percentage change in the number of references to the financial market instrument from a first interval of time to a second interval of time.

15 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the percentage change indicates whether the number of references to the financial market instrument is trending up, down or is neutral.

16 . A system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory storage medium for tangibly storing thereon program logic for execution by the processor, the program logic comprising:

determining logic executed by the processor for determining a trend in number of references to a financial market instrument using a corpus of messages of a number of users of at least one online messaging service, each message of the corpus containing a reference to the financial market instrument;

selecting logic executed by the processor for selecting the financial market instrument using the determined trend in number of references to the financial market instrument;

generating logic executed by the processor for generating a graphical user interface (GUI) for an online financial information provider, the GUI comprising information indicating the determined trend in number of references to the financial market instrument; and

causing logic executed by the processor for causing the generated GUI to be displayed by at least one client computing device.

17 . The system of claim 16 , the program logic further comprising:

identifying logic executed by the processor for identifying a sentiment associated with the financial market instrument using the corpus of messages.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the identified sentiment is used with the determined trend in number of references in selecting the financial market instrument.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the financial market instrument selection further comprises selecting a plurality of financial market instruments comprising the financial market instrument and at least one additional financial market instrument, a respective additional financial market instrument being selected using a trend in number of references determined for the respective additional financial market instrument, the GUI further comprising information indicating the trend in number of references determined for each of the plurality of financial market instruments selected.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the information of the GUI comprises a listing of the plurality of financial market instruments sorted based on the trend and sentiment determined for each of the plurality of financial market instruments.
