Abstract

Docking platforms formed in one of the largest-surface-area surfaces of mobile electronic devices. Such a docking platform may comprise a docking accessory cavity having a docking connection system comprising one or more docking connectors formed within the cavity, and optionally two or more electrical contacts within the cavity, the contacts electrically connected to electronics within the electronic device and constructed and arranged to allow electrical connection to detachable docking accessories. The docking connection system is operable to form detachable attachments to multiple independent docking accessories simultaneously. The cavities of the docking platforms are shaped to accommodate a broad range of docking accessories that are specially adapted to sit in a generally flush manner with the back surface of the mobile electronic device while attached to the docking connectors. One type of accessory forms an assembly with an expandable accordion attached to the docking platform.

Claims (40)

1. A docking accessory platform adapted to couple to a mobile electronic device, the platform comprising:

an external back surface;

an internal back surface opposite the external back surface of the platform, wherein the internal back surface is adjacent to a back surface of the mobile electronic device when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device; and

a docking connector magnetic attachment system formed beneath the external back surface of the platform and configured to form detachable magnetic attachments to compatible docking accessories,

wherein the docking connector magnetic attachment system comprises at least one magnet formed in an annular shape beneath the external back surface of the platform,

wherein the platform is adapted to form a detachable magnetic attachment of compatible docking accessories to the external back surface of the platform.

2. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein the docking connector magnetic attachment system comprises a plurality of magnets formed in the annular shape beneath the external back surface of the platform.

3. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer with the mobile electronic device through the external back surface and the internal back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device and a power accessory is magnetically attached to the docking connector magnetic attachment system.

4. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer between a battery accessory and the mobile electronic device through the external back surface and the internal back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device and the battery accessory is magnetically attached to the docking connector magnetic attachment system.

5. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer between a charger and the mobile electronic device through the external back surface and the internal back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device and the charger is magnetically attached to the docking connector magnetic attachment system.

6. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein the platform is adapted to be coupled to only the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

7. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein said compatible docking accessories include a gaming controller accessory.

8. The docking accessory platform of claim 1 , wherein the docking connector magnetic attachment system further comprises an aligning element distinct from the at least one magnet formed in the annular shape.

9. The docking accessory platform of claim 8 , wherein the aligning element and the at least one magnet formed in the annular shape are configured to orient one or more of the compatible docking accessories on the external back surface of the platform.

10. A platform coupleable to a mobile electronic device, the platform comprising:

a front surface;

a back surface opposite the front surface of the platform, wherein the back surface of the platform faces a back of the mobile electronic device when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device; and

a magnetic attachment system formed between the front surface and the back surface of the platform, wherein the magnetic attachment system is formed in an annular shape and is configured to form detachable magnetic attachments to magnetically attachable docking accessories,

wherein the detachable magnetic attachments between the platform and the magnetically attachable docking accessories are substantially flush.

11. The platform of claim 10 , wherein the magnetic attachment system comprises a plurality of magnets formed in the annular shape between the front surface and the back surface of the platform.

12. The platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer with the mobile electronic device through the front surface and the back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device.

13. The platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer between a battery accessory and the mobile electronic device through the front surface and the back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device and the battery accessory is magnetically attached to the docking connector magnetic attachment system.

14. The platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer between a charger and the mobile electronic device through the front surface and the back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device.

15. The platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform is coupleable to only the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

16. The platform of claim 10 , wherein said magnetically attachable docking accessories include a gaming controller accessory.

17. The platform of claim 10 , wherein the platform further comprises an aligning element distinct from the annular shape of the magnetic attachment system.

18. The platform of claim 17 , wherein the aligning element and the magnetic attachment system are configured to orient one or more of the compatible docking accessories on the front surface of the platform.

19. A platform coupleable to a mobile electronic device, the platform comprising:

a front surface;

a back surface opposite the front surface of the platform, wherein the back surface of the platform faces a back of the mobile electronic device when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device; and

a magnetic attachment system formed between the front surface and the back surface of the platform, wherein the magnetic attachment system is formed in an annular shape and is configured to form detachable magnetic attachments to magnetically attachable docking accessories,

wherein the platform is configured to form detachable magnetic attachments of compatible docking accessories to the front surface of the platform.

20. The platform of claim 19 , wherein the magnetic attachment system comprises a plurality of magnets formed in the annular shape between the front surface and the back surface of the platform.

21. The platform of claim 19 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer with the mobile electronic device through the front surface and the back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device.

22. The platform of claim 19 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer between a battery accessory and the mobile electronic device through the front surface and the back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device and the battery accessory is magnetically attached to the docking connector magnetic attachment system.

23. The platform of claim 19 , wherein the platform allows wireless power transfer between a charger and the mobile electronic device through the front surface and the back surface when the platform is coupled to the mobile electronic device.

24. The platform of claim 19 , wherein the platform is coupleable to only the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

25. The platform of claim 19 , wherein said magnetically attachable docking accessories include a gaming controller accessory.
