Abstract

A high-solids wastewater treatment system is disclosed. The wastewater treatment system includes a ballasted reactor, a solids-liquid separation subsystem, a pre-treatment subsystem, a ballast feed subsystem, and a ballast recovery subsystem. The high-solids wastewater treatment system can include a reaction tank, a thickener, and a filter press. A method of treating high-solids wastewater is also disclosed. The method includes contacting a wastewater feed with a coagulant or flocculant, thickening the dosed wastewater, treating the effluent with a ballast, settling the treated wastewater, and conveying the ballasted sludge to the wastewater feed, dosed wastewater, or treated wastewater. The wastewater feed may have more than 500 mg/L of total suspended solids. The wastewater feed may contain inorganic solids.

Claims (31)

1 . A ballasted flocculation high-solids wastewater treatment system comprising:

a ballasted reactor having at least one ballasted reactor inlet and a ballasted reactor outlet;

a solids-liquid separation subsystem having a solids-liquid separation subsystem inlet fluidly connectable to the ballasted reactor outlet, a solids-lean effluent outlet, and a solids-rich ballasted floc outlet;

a pre-treatment subsystem comprising a reaction tank and a thickener, the reaction tank having a first reaction tank inlet and a dosed wastewater outlet, the first reaction tank inlet being fluidly connectable to a source of high-solids wastewater configured and arranged to deliver wastewater comprising at least 500 mg/L of total suspended solids (TSS), and a second reaction tank inlet fluidly connectable to a source of at least one of a coagulant and a flocculant, and the thickener having a thickener inlet fluidly connectable to the dosed wastewater outlet and an effluent outlet fluidly connectable to the at least one ballasted reactor inlet, and a sludge outlet;

a filter press having a filter press inlet fluidly connectable to the sludge outlet, a pressate outlet fluidly connectable to the pre-treatment subsystem, and a filter cake outlet;

a ballast feed subsystem having a ballast outlet fluidly connectable to the at least one ballasted reactor inlet; and

a ballast recovery subsystem having a ballast recovery subsystem inlet fluidly connectable to the solids-rich ballasted floc outlet and a ballast recovery outlet fluidly connectable to at least one of the ballasted reactor and the pre-treatment subsystem.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the source of high-solids wastewater is configured and arranged to deliver wastewater comprising at least 2000 mg/L of TSS.

3 . A method of treating a high-solids wastewater, the method comprising:

contacting a wastewater feed from a source of high-solids wastewater with at least one of a coagulant and a flocculant to produce a dosed wastewater;

thickening the dosed wastewater to produce a sludge and an effluent;

treating the effluent with a ballast to produce a treated wastewater;

settling the treated wastewater to produce a solids-lean effluent and a solids-rich ballasted floc; and

conveying the ballasted floc to at least one of the wastewater feed, the dosed wastewater, the effluent, and the treated wastewater.

4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising filtering the sludge to produce a pressate and a filter cake.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising conveying the pressate to the wastewater feed.

6 . The method of claim 3 , comprising conveying the ballasted floc to the wastewater feed, the dosed wastewater, and the effluent.

7 . The method of claim 3 , comprising pre-treating the wastewater feed by contacting the wastewater feed with the coagulant to produce the dosed wastewater.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising contacting the dosed wastewater with the flocculant.

9 . The method of claim 3 , wherein treating the high-solids wastewater comprises treating wastewater having at least 500 mg/L of total suspended solids (TSS).

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein treating the high-solids wastewater comprises treating wastewater having at least 2000 mg/L of TSS.

11 . The method of claim 3 , wherein treating the high-solids wastewater comprises treating wastewater including inorganic solids.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein treating the high-solids wastewater comprises contacting the wastewater feed from an industrial source selected from the group consisting of a power plant, a mining operation, a food and beverage production operation, an oil or gas production plant, an oil or gas production refinery, and a general industrial plant.

13 . The method of claim 3 , wherein contacting the wastewater feed with at least one of the coagulant and the flocculant is performed in a pre-treatment unit.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein contacting the wastewater feed with at least one of the coagulant and the flocculant is performed in a reaction tank positioned in the pre-treatment unit.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein thickening the dosed wastewater is performed in the pre-treatment unit.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein thickening the dosed wastewater is performed in a thickener positioned in the pre-treatment unit.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the dosed wastewater is conveyed from the reaction tank to the thickener.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein treating the effluent with a ballast is performed in a ballasted reactor.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the effluent is conveyed from the thickener to the ballasted reactor.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein settling the treated wastewater is performed in a solids-liquid separator.
