Abstract

An energy storage device comprising a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode comprises a self-supporting composite material film, a separator between the first electrode and the second electrode, and an electrolyte in contact with the first electrode, the second electrode, and the separator, wherein the electrolyte comprises at least one of a fluorine-containing cyclic carbonate, a fluorine-containing linear carbonate, and a fluoroether. The composite material film having greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of silicon particles, and greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of one or more types of carbon phases. At least one of the one or more types of carbon phases can be a substantially continuous phase that holds the composite material film together such that the silicon particles are distributed throughout the composite material film.

Claims (17)

1 . An energy storage device, comprising:

a first electrode;

a second electrode;

a separator between the first electrode and the second electrode; and

an electrolyte composition in contact with the first electrode, the second electrode, and the separator,

wherein the electrolyte composition comprises at least two co-solvents and at least one additive.

2 . The energy storage device according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one additive reduces the gassing of the electrode.

3 . The energy storage device according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one additive is selected from the group consisting of adiponitrile (AN), lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB), 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS), 1,3 propanesultone (PS), trimethyl phosphate (TMP), and succinonitrile (SN).

4 . The energy storage device according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one additive comprises less than 10% by weight (wt %) of the electrolyte composition.

5 . The energy storage device according to claim 4 , wherein said at least one additive comprises from about 1 wt % to about 9 wt % of the electrolyte composition.

6 . The battery according to claim 1 , wherein said electrolyte composition further comprises a lithium-containing salt.

7 . The battery according to claim 6 , wherein said lithium-containing salt is selected from the group consisting of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4), lithium hexafluoroarsenate monohydrate (LiAsF6), lithium perchlorate (LiClO4), and lithium triflate (LiCF3SO3).

8 . The battery according to claim 1 , wherein said electrolyte composition comprises a solvent comprising a fluorine-containing component.

9 . The battery according to claim 8 , wherein said fluorine-containing component is a fluorine-containing cyclic carbonate, a fluorine-containing linear carbonate, and/or a fluoroether.

10 . The battery according to claim 8 , wherein said fluorine-containing component is fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, or difluoroethylene carbonate (F2EC).

11 . The battery according to claim 10 , wherein said fluorine-containing component is fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC).

12 . The battery according to claim 11 , wherein the fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is present at a concentration of about 10 vol % to about 60 vol %.
