Abstract

Techniques are provided for transforming, using at least one translation library, data communicated between a radio and a virtual baseband unit having incompatible data protocols.

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus for facilitating communications between a radio and a baseband unit, the apparatus comprising:

a first fronthaul interface circuit configured to communicatively couple the apparatus to the baseband unit;

a second fronthaul interface circuit configured to communicatively couple the apparatus to the radio; and

circuitry configured to:

receive first downlink transport data through the first fronthaul interface circuit and from the baseband unit, the first downlink transport data formatted in accordance with a first transport format;

produce second downlink transport data using downlink user data derived from the first downlink transport data by using the downlink user data to automatically produce downlink messages communicated using the second downlink transport data, the second downlink transport data formatted in accordance with a second transport format;

transmit the second downlink transport data to the radio;

receive second uplink transport data from the radio, the second uplink transport data formatted in accordance with the second transport format;

produce first uplink transport data using uplink user data derived from the second uplink transport data to automatically produce uplink messages communicated using the first uplink transport data, the first uplink transport data formatted in accordance with the first transport format; and

transmit the first uplink transport data to the baseband unit; and

wherein the downlink user data is used for communicating downlink voice data and/or other downlink data wirelessly transmitted to user equipment via the radio and the uplink user data is used for communicating uplink voice data and/or other uplink data wirelessly received from the user equipment via the radio.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is further configured to:

determine or receive characteristics of the radio;

using the characteristics of the radio, to select at least one translation library;

automatically produce the downlink messages, using the at least one translation library, to convert first downlink messages in a first protocol to the downlink messages in a second protocol; and

automatically produce the uplink messages, using the at least one translation library, to convert second uplink messages in the second protocol to the uplink messages in the first protocol.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the baseband unit is a virtual baseband unit.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first transport format is an Ethernet based format;
