Abstract

Various components for artificial candles and other lighting devices are described that can be used to create a realistic flame effect in the devices. The devices include a flame piece or element that extends upwardly from a body of the device. A light source can be disposed with respect to the flame piece such that the flame piece is illuminated. A variety of drive mechanisms could be disposed within the body of the device that can cause movement of the flame piece with respect to the body or housing. The flame piece can be coupled to a body or housing of the device using various components to suspend at least a portion of the flame piece within the body or housing.

Claims (19)

1. A lighting device, comprising:

a body;

a flame-shaped piece at least partially disposed within the body,

wherein the flame-shaped piece comprises an interior portion having an internal surface of a concave curved shape that allows a ball-shaped first end of a support member to extend into the interior portion, such that when the flame-shaped piece is suspended via a tip of the ball-shaped first end being in contact with the concave curved shape, the flame-shaped piece is configured to move with respect to the body; and

wherein the flame-shaped piece comprises one or more magnets positioned at a lower portion of the flame-shaped piece;

a coil positioned below the flame-shaped piece configured to generate an electromagnetic field, and wherein interaction of the one or more magnets with the electromagnetic field causes movement of the flame-shaped piece;

one or more light sources positioned at an angle with respect to the flame-shaped piece such that light from the one or more light sources is emitted on the flame-shaped piece; and

a circuit board within the body configured to control an operation of the coil for the movement of the flame-shaped piece.

2. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the interior portion is shaped as a socket to interact with the support member.

3. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the interior portion is shaped by a cone-shaped skirt.

4. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the flame-shaped piece comprises a hole.

5. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the flame-shaped piece comprises an upper portion that includes a concave surface onto which the light is emitted.

6. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the support member comprises a bent section.

7. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein a center of mass of the flame-shaped piece is located below a point where the first end of the support member interacts with the interior portion of the flame-shaped piece.

8. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more light sources comprise one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs).

9. The lighting device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a battery compartment that includes a cavity configured to hold one or more batteries.

10. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises at least one of a plastic material or a wax material.

11. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the body has a shape of a pillar candle or a tapered candle.
