Abstract

A system for optimizing a 4G or 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) including multiple cell sites each having multiple sectors, and at least one of the cell sites in communication with a user equipment (UE), the system including i) a downlink (DL) medium access control (MAC) layer including a DL MAC Scheduler configured to schedule at least one of Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) message 2, PRACH message 4, Radio Resource Control (RRC) Release and Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) of other traffic, in each sector in at least one of frequency and time, in the downlink direction; and ii) an uplink (UL) MAC layer including a UL MAC scheduler configured to schedule at least one of PRACH message 3, RRC Setup Complete and Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) of other traffic, in each sector in at least one of frequency and time, in the uplink direction.

Claims (40)

1 . A system for optimizing signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of one of a 4G or 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) including multiple cell sites each having multiple sectors, and at least one of the cell sites in communication with a user equipment (UE), the system comprising:

i) a downlink (DL) medium access control (MAC) layer including a DL MAC Scheduler configured to schedule at least one of Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) message 2, PRACH message 4, Radio Resource Control (RRC) Release and Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) of other traffic, in each sector in at least one of frequency and time, in the downlink direction; and

ii) an uplink (UL) MAC layer including a UL MAC scheduler configured to schedule at least one of PRACH message 3, RRC Setup Complete and Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) of other traffic, in each sector in at least one of frequency and time, in the uplink direction.

2 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein the DL MAC layer assigns a unique DL interference avoidance (IA) region in physical resource blocks (PRBs) to each sector, and wherein at least one of:

i) the sectors of each cell site are assigned one of sector identity or a Physical Cell Identity (PCI) modulo 3 identifier;

ii) the DL IA regions in PRBs for the multiple sectors do not overlap; and

iii) the PRB locations for all the DL IA regions are known to all the sectors.

3 . The system according to claim 2 , wherein the DL MAC Scheduler schedules, in descending priority order, at least one of the PRACH message 2, PRACH message 4 and RRC Release in the DL IA region for a selected sector.

4 . The system according to claim 2 , wherein, for a selected sector, the DL MAC Scheduler does not schedule the PDSCH for data in the DL IA regions assigned to other sectors.

The system according to claim 1 , wherein, for a cell load condition below a specified threshold, the UL MAC assigns a single UL interference avoidance (UL IA) region in physical resource blocks (PRBs) to all the sectors, and wherein the PRB location for the UL IA region is known to all the sectors.

6 . The system according to claim 5 , wherein the UL MAC Scheduler schedules PRACH message 3 or RRC Setup Complete in the UL IA region in that priority order.

7 . The system according to claim 5 , wherein the UL MAC Scheduler does not schedule PDSCH for data in the UL IA region.

8 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein, for a cell load condition above a specified threshold, the UL MAC assigns a unique UL interference avoidance (UL IA) region in physical resource blocks (PRBs) to each sector, and wherein at least one of:

i) the sectors of each cell site are assigned one of sector identity or a Physical Cell Identity (PCI) modulo 3 identifier;

iii) the UL IA regions in PRBs for the multiple sectors do not overlap; and

iv) the PRB locations for all the UL IA regions are known to all the sectors.

9 . The system according to claim 8 , wherein at least one of:

i) the UL MAC Scheduler schedules, in descending priority order, at least one of the PRACH message 3 or RRC Setup Complete in the UL IA region for a selected sector; and

ii) for a selected sector, the UL MAC Scheduler does not schedule PDSCH for data in the UL IA regions assigned to other sectors.

The system according to claim 3 , wherein, for a selected sector, the DL MAC Scheduler is configured to utilize unused power from PRBs of the DL IA regions of other sectors for sending at least one of the PRACH message 2, PRACH message 4 and RRC Release in the DL IA region for the selected sector.

11 . A method for optimizing signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of one of a 4G or 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) including multiple cell sites each having multiple sectors, and at least one of the cell sites in communication with a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

i) configuring a downlink (DL) medium access control (MAC) layer including a DL MAC Scheduler to schedule at least one of Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) message 2, PRACH message 4, Radio Resource Control (RRC) Release and Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) of other traffic, in each sector in at least one of frequency and time, in the downlink direction; and

ii) configuring an uplink (UL) MAC layer including a UL MAC scheduler to schedule at least one of PRACH message 3, RRC Setup Complete and Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) of other traffic, in each sector in at least one of frequency and time, in the uplink direction.

12 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein the DL MAC layer assigns a unique DL interference avoidance (IA) region in physical resource blocks (PRBs) to each sector, and wherein at least one of:

i) the sectors of each cell site are assigned one of sector identity or a Physical Cell Identity (PCI) modulo 3 identifier;

ii) the DL IA regions in PRBs for the multiple sectors do not overlap; and

iii) the PRB locations for all the DL IA regions are known to all the sectors.

13 . The method according to claim 12 , wherein the DL MAC Scheduler schedules, in descending priority order, at least one of the PRACH message 2, PRACH message 4 and RRC Release in the DL IA region for a selected sector.

14 . The method according to claim 12 , wherein, for a selected sector, the DL MAC Scheduler does not schedule the PDSCH for data in the DL IA regions assigned to other sectors.

The method according to claim 11 , wherein, for a cell load condition below a specified threshold, the UL MAC assigns a single UL interference avoidance (UL IA) region in physical resource blocks (PRBs) to all the sectors, and wherein the PRB location for the UL IA region is known to all the sectors.

16 . The method according to claim 15 , wherein the UL MAC Scheduler schedules PRACH message 3 or RRC Setup Complete in the UL IA region in that priority order.

17 . The method according to claim 15 , wherein the UL MAC Scheduler does not schedule PDSCH for data in the UL IA region.

18 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein, for a cell load condition above a specified threshold, the UL MAC assigns a unique UL interference avoidance (UL IA) region in physical resource blocks (PRBs) to each sector, and wherein at least one of:

i) the sectors of each cell site are assigned one of sector identity or a Physical Cell Identity (PCI) modulo 3 identifier;

iii) the UL IA regions in PRBs for the multiple sectors do not overlap; and

iv) the PRB locations for all the UL IA regions are known to all the sectors.

19 . The method according to claim 18 , wherein at least one of:

i) the UL MAC Scheduler schedules, in descending priority order, at least one of the PRACH message 3 or RRC Setup Complete in the UL IA region for a selected sector; and

ii) for a selected sector, the UL MAC Scheduler does not schedule PDSCH for data in the UL IA regions assigned to other sectors.

The method according to claim 13 , wherein, for a selected sector, the DL MAC Scheduler is configured to utilize unused power from PRBs of the DL IA regions of other sectors for sending at least one of the PRACH message 2, PRACH message 4 and RRC Release in the DL IA region for the selected sector.
