Abstract

An imaging system is provided comprising an imaging probe and at least one delivery device. The imaging probe comprises an elongate shaft, a rotatable optical core and an optical assembly. The elongate shaft comprises a proximal end, a distal portion, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal portion. The rotatable optical core is positioned within the lumen of the elongate shaft and comprises a proximal end and a distal end. The rotatable optical core is configured to optically and mechanically connect with an interface unit. The optical assembly is positioned in the elongate shaft distal portion and proximate the rotatable optical core distal end. The optical assembly is configured to direct light to tissue and collect reflected light from the tissue. The imaging probe is constructed and arranged to collect image data from a patient site. The at least one delivery device is constructed and arranged to slidingly engage the imaging probe. Methods of introducing the imaging probe and the at least one delivery catheter into a patient are also provided.

Claims (29)

1. A method for imaging, the method comprising:

providing a first delivery device comprising a first elongate shaft having a first proximal end, a first distal end, and a first lumen extending between the first proximal end and the first distal end;

providing an image probe, the imaging probe comprising:

a second elongate shaft comprising a second proximal end, a distal portion, and a second lumen extending between the second proximal end and the distal portion;

positioning a rotatable optical core of the image probe within the second lumen of the second elongate shaft, the optical core comprising a third proximal end and a second distal end;

positioning an optical assembly within the distal portion of the second elongate shaft and proximate the second distal end of the rotatable optical core;

directing light to a source of tissue and collecting reflected light from the source of tissue by the optical assembly;

connecting, optically and mechanically an interface unit to the rotatable optical core;

rotating by a rotating assembly of the interface unit the optical assembly;

retracting by a retraction assembly the optical assembly and the second elongate shaft in unison; and

translating, by the retraction assembly, the first elongate shaft and the second elongate shaft in unison.

2. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , further comprising simultaneously inserting the first elongate shaft and the second elongate shaft into a patient during the translation of the first elongate shaft and the second elongate shaft.

The method of imaging according to claim 2 , further comprising providing a second delivery device, the second delivery device comprising a third elongate shaft having a fourth proximal end, a third distal end, and a third lumen extending between the fourth proximal end and the third distal end, wherein the first elongate shaft and the second elongate shaft are constructed and arranged to translate within the third lumen.

4. The method of imaging according to claim 3 , wherein the first elongate shaft comprises a first outer diameter and a third elongate shaft comprising a first inner diameter, wherein the first diameter is larger than the first outer diameter.

5. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , further comprising frictionally engaging the first delivery device and the imaging probe.

6. The method of imaging according to claim 5 , further comprising maintaining a relative position between the first elongate shaft and the second elongate shaft through the frictional engagement.

7. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the first lumen of the first delivery device includes a closed distal end.

8. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft has a transparent segment.

9. The method of imaging according to claim 8 , wherein the transparent segment has a length of up to 1 cm.

10. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , further comprising retracting the optical assembly using the retraction assembly at a retraction rate of between 5 mm/sec and 60 mm/sec.

11. The method of imaging according to claim 10 , further comprising retracting the optical assembly at approximately 40 mm/sec.

12. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , further comprising performing a pullback procedure of the retraction assembly, the pullback procedure comprising retracting the optical assembly and the second elongate shaft.

13. The method of imaging according to claim 12 , further comprising the translating during the pullback procedure the first elongate shaft in unison with the second elongate shaft.

14. The method of imaging according to claim 12 , further comprising retracting during the pullback procedure a distance of between 20 mm and 100 mm.

15. The method of imaging according to claim 12 , further comprising performing the pullback procedure for a time period of between 1 second and 15 seconds.

16. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , further comprising returning the retraction assembly to a starting position without advancing the second elongate shaft.

17. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , wherein one or more components are at least one of a disposable component or a reusable component.

18. The method of imaging according to claim 17 , further comprising the one or more components being a sterilizable reusable component.

19. The method of imaging according to claim 1 , further comprising providing one or more images on a display, the images being based on the reflected light collected by the optical assembly.
