Abstract

An illustrative method includes detecting a log-in request associated with a managed directory within the file system, determining that the log-in request satisfies one or more criteria, and automatically generating, based on the determining that the log-in request satisfies the one or more criteria, a managed home directory within the managed directory. In some embodiments, the managed home directory may be usable by a storage management system to provide user-specific storage management functionality to a dataset of the directory.

Claims (36)

1 . A computer-implemented method for home directory level storage management of a file system, comprising:

detecting, by a storage system configured to manage content of the file system, a log-in request associated with a managed directory within the file system, the managed directory configured to provide directory-level storage management functionality to a first dataset of the managed directory, the storage management functionality comprising accessing management data associated with the first dataset;

determining, by the storage system, that the log-in request satisfies one or more criteria; and

automatically generating, by the storage system based on the determining that the log-in request satisfies the one or more criteria, a managed home directory within the managed directory, the managed home directory configured to provide user-specific storage management functionality to a second dataset of the managed home directory, wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on the management data associated with the first dataset.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on one or more user-specific permissions of a user associated with the log-in request.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more user-specific permissions comprises one or more of an access control list (ACL), a quota rule, or a snapshot rule.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on one or more policies imported from the managed directory.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more policies are associated with one or more of snapshots associated with the file system, data replication associated with the file system, security alerts associated with the file system, or user access control associated with the file system.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more criteria comprises one or more of the log-in request being a first log-in request of a user, a resource usage level associated with the file system, an access level associated with the file system, a security level associated with the file system, a number of existing managed directories, or a number of existing managed home directories.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the detecting the log-in request comprises one or more of detecting an NFS authentication process or detecting an SMB authentication process.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting a log-out request associated with the managed directory within the file system;

determining that the log-out request satisfies one or more additional criteria; and

automatically archiving, based on the determining that the log-out request satisfies the one or more additional criteria, the managed home directory.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the managed directory comprises a root directory associated with the file system, and the managed home directory is associated with a user of the file system.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises executing an autodir command associated with the file system.

11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the managed directory and the managed home directory are visible to administrators associated with the managed directory and not visible to clients associated with the managed directory.

12 . A computer program product embodied on a non-transitory computer-readable medium and comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to perform a process comprising:

detecting, by a storage system configured to manage content of a file system, a request associated with a managed directory within the file system, the managed directory configured to provide directory-level storage management functionality to a first dataset of the managed directory, the storage management functionality comprising accessing management data associated with the first dataset;

determining, by the storage system, that the request satisfies one or more criteria; and

automatically generating, by the storage system based on the determining that the request satisfies the one or more criteria, a managed home directory within the managed directory, the managed home directory configured to provide user-specific storage management functionality to a second dataset of the managed home directory, wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on the management data associated with the first dataset.

13 . The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on one or more user-specific permissions of a user associated with the request.

14 . The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the one or more user-specific permissions comprises one or more of an access control list (ACL), a quota rule, or a snapshot rule.

15 . The computer program product of claim 12 ,

wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on one or more policies imported from the managed directory.

16 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the one or more policies are associated with one or more of snapshots associated with the file system, data replication associated with the file system, security alerts associated with the file system, or user access control associated with the file system.

17 . The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the one or more criteria comprises one or more of the request being a log-in request of a user, a resource usage level associated with the file system, an access level associated with the file system, a security level associated with the file system, a number of existing managed directories, or a number of existing managed home directories.

18 . A system comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

one or more processors communicatively coupled to the memory and configured to execute the instructions to perform a process comprising:

detecting a request associated with a managed directory within a file system, the managed directory configured to provide directory-level storage management functionality to a first dataset of the managed directory, the storage management functionality comprising accessing management data associated with the first dataset;

determining that the request satisfies one or more criteria; and

automatically generating, based on the determining that the request satisfies the one or more criteria, a managed home directory within the managed directory, the managed home directory configured to provide user-specific storage management functionality to a second dataset of the managed home directory, wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on the management data associated with the first dataset.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on one or more user-specific permissions of a user associated with the request.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the directory comprises a managed directory configured to provide directory-level storage management functionality to a dataset of the directory; and

wherein the automatically generating the managed home directory comprises configuring the managed home directory based on one or more policies imported from the managed directory.
